WASHINGTON — Chief Justice John Roberts publicly chastised Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Wednesday over comments Schumer made outside the court as the justices were hearing a case on abortion rights.

Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested that President Donald Trump's court appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, "won't know what hit" them if they vote to uphold abortion restrictions. He spoke during a rally on the sidewalk in front of the court building.

"I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price,” Schumer said.

In a highly unusual written statement issued late Wednesday, Roberts said "statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only appropriate, they are dangerous."

"All members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter," Roberts said.

The court was hearing a challenge to a Louisiana law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. It was the first major abortion case to reach the Supreme Court since the retirement of Anthony Kennedy, who voted to uphold a woman's right to choose. He was replaced by Kavanaugh, who is generally more conservative.

Schumer told the crowd that state legislatures are waging a war on women by passing tough new abortion laws. "I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won't know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions."

The senator's spokesman said Schumer was referring to the political price Republicans "will pay for putting them on the court." It was a warning, the spokesman said, "that the justices will unleash major grassroots movement on the issue of reproductive rights against the decision."

In his statement, Roberts said, "Justices know that criticism comes with the territory," before calling Schumer's comments inappropriate and dangerous. "All members of the court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter."

Roberts has often said in public appearances that he believes it is mistaken to assume that federal judges act out of their own partisan political interests. In 2018, He notably responded to President Trump's criticism of a federal judge as "an Obama judge."

"We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges," Roberts said then. "What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them."

His statements are too generalized and non specific to be considered an actual threat. Did the court forget about the 1rst amendment?

They're not charging him with anything, or saying he can't do something, they're just issuing a formal rebuke to "knock that shit off" , which the court rarely does.

Because it used to be understood you respected the court as a politician even if you disagreed with them, but the Dems crossed that, admittedly, gentleman's line along with a thousand others in a belief that all's fair to get Drumpf out....
 
It is amazing, however, how quickly the focus shifted to this and not the fact ol' Bug Eyes kinda just stopped yammering about impeachment failure.... you know? The gravest miscarriage of justice this country's ever seen?

Reminder that the plaintiff in Roe v. Wade died a practicing Roman Catholic fighting to have Roe v. Wade overturned because-- according to her-- she in fact lied about being raped by multiple black men in order to have a chance at procuring an abortion in Texas.

Schumer got rebuked in the Senate, offered a non-apology apology, then Cocaine Mitch said his non-apology was "trying to gaslight the entire country".

Please, Cocaine Mitch, please keep using the language of the activist left.
 
Just a reminder that if you as a regular person say what Chuck said about any other court you would do time in prison.

Not really. He's threatening him with whirlwinds? Charged with what? At the most you'd get a visit from the Federal Marshals, I believe, asking you to clarify what you meant. You probably wouldn't get a personal bitchslap from the Chief Justice.

Hal Turner is the closest you'll find and he doxed an appeals court judge and explicitly urged people to go assassinate him. Even that was a borderline case that he lost mostly because of his own insanity and stupidity and not having very good legal counsel.
 
What strikes me here is senior Dem leadership embracing the childish prog attitude of treating SCOTUS justices like everyday elected political adversaries who are conspiring against them.
 
Could this be considered Obstruction of Justice? Would be ironic if he could be impeached and removed over it.
 
I like how Schumer's "apology" in mentioning his Brooklyn background was essentially hitting the Senate floor and saying "Das how we do, yo!"

you could make the argument that schumer is going to get democrats to harass the justices by protesting at their homes and stalking them whereever they go. maybe throwing drinks and shit at them.

theres plenty of precedents to choose from.
