Draw what you want, have a representative portfolio, and reject commissions you don't want to take. I won't go to an artist whose portfolio is all fluffy kittens to have her design a futuristic fighter plane. This is actually a genuine concern for me at the moment. I like to draw lesbian art and I am hoping someday to take commissions for it, but I have been dragging my heels on it because I don't want to draw penises. I don't have trauma or anything like that, I just don't want to draw them because I don't want to look at them to reference them. They are unattractive to me. I just want to draw very feminine-featured women!
But I feel like I can't do that, because there's no way I can state that I don't want to draw body shapes that are unattractive to me without being labelled a TERF and cancelled. What am I actually supposed to do? I feel like I cannot win. Do I simply not engage in any discussion that happens about it?
Definitely don't engage in discussion about why exactly you won't do a thing (except if you actually want to complete part of a commission, like, "you want a lady in front of a fighter plane, I'm not good at fighter planes but I can still design/draw the lady"). Just, "I don't think I'm the right artist for this project. Best of luck to you!" First, you're the artist and you ain't got to explain shit, second, it's just unprofessional telling potential clients "you're dumb and your idea is dumb" if you're not hired as an editor. There will be people who are dumb and whose ideas are dumb who haven't done anything wrong but who you'll still want to reject. Do the same with horrortroons and block if they send you islamic content.
Excuses are unprofessional. I'd hate to bash a rape survivor, but she should've never let herself be cornered to the point she'd feel the need to provide excuses. Trauma is for when you made a mistake, to explain you didn't do it on purpose. A "case" will be built against you regardless, on the conspicuous absence of deathfats and horrortroons in your portfolio. On the upside, having one or more well-defined specialties (like "beautiful ladies") makes you one of the to-go people for that specialty and builds a case for why a customer should order from you specifically instead of shopping around for the lowest price. It doesn't seem to help when you defend yourself because if even trauma from rape isn't a valid excuse then I definitely won't get away with 'I just don't want to'. But if I don't engage then I will have a case built against me that I cannot defend against.
No, commissions are still art that you make, not a good that you sell. The amount and proportion of uninteresting work you will have to accept depends on how good/famous you are and how much do you want to earn. An additional consideration is building a portfolio of your work - taking a request you don't want to be associated with means it won't add value to your portfolio, so it should add value to your bank account directly if you take it at all.Well, my general advice is two fold, first commissions are for your clients, if you do them you should expect do stuff that isn't that intresting to you personally, and second just don't take NSFW commissions.
Also, not all NSFW art is made equal. A half-possum, half-crab getting double-anally-raped by dutch angel dragons isn't the same as a dreamy nude lady (with FEMALE-IDENTIFYING NIPPLES!!!1!) relaxing at the edge of a pool in a peony garden. There's "banned on instagram" and there's "if this pops up in a google search for my real name, I will never have a real job".
This. Be a professional, not an internet personality. For professional socialization, upboat and comment on the art you like, give helpful tips to sane newbs, and generaly behave like a nice civilized person. Don't do politics or opinion on your art account. At most, pick a schtick associated with some humanitarian cause you're concerned about and be as spergy as you want, but have it be a defined cause, not a political wing or a specific organization supporting the cause.just draw what you like, dont draw what you dont like, and simply ignore people who try to commission troon shit
dont have to get involved in any shit flinging, just dont say anything and quietly ignore them
