I’m also curious as to what causes of cognitive delay and learning disabilities are down and what causes are up, in the US and other developed countries. Kids aren’t developing cretinism anymore from iodine deficiency. But on the other hand there’s a lot more very premature babies who would’ve died even twenty years ago who now aren’t but have severe issues from that.
I see all these stories from teachers about kids who are aggressive and finally get sent home and then the mom buys the kid an ice cream cone and takes him to a movie. I don’t get it.

She died last year, if that makes you feel... well, better probably isn't the right word but you know what I mean. I'm not implying you're evil or anything, just that at least she isn't suffering/living with that face anymore.

Exactly. They also managed to keep pretty bad tards in line with Pavlovian like smacks and punishments back in the bad old days. Tards are dumb, but most of them understood “Do X, get immediately smacked with belt or baton” after a few times, and suddenly stopped doing X. For day to day behavior modification it is harsh but was fairly effective.
I remember a very old mentally slow crazy tard that a grad student friend of mine had as a patient. The old guy had been a ward of the state most of his life and had all his teeth removed back in the 1950s. Why? Because he was famous for aggressively biting staff and other patients....so no more teeth. For many years they handed him his false teeth to eat with, then took them back after meals.
I remember my friend talking about evil and awful it was but all I could think was what we’re they supposed to do with a rabid human biting the shit out everyone? I mean would muzzling him like a dog between meals been better? Even more drugs? Seemed rather practical solution for the a serial biter of staff and fellow tards that could not be reasoned with. (Biting the ear off another patient was apparently what finally got the dentist called in to pull his teeth.) In the 1850’s he probably would have been beaten to death or sold as a geek to a traveling circus.

Not so fun fact, there was an utterly insane psychiatrist who decided for no real reason that people were crazy because they were being somehow poisoned by their teeth so he would "treat" them by pulling out all their teeth. His name was Henry Cotton and he died in the '30s so this guy probably had nothing to do with that quack's theory but it reminded me of it.

The DSM-V wanted a more continuum based thing so personality disorders, autism, etc. all became more general categories which did lead to more catchall issues like what we are seeing with autism now.
This still happens today, especially with disorders lke Lesch-Nyhan.

Yeah, I was talking broadly about a bunch of different ones. Some chromosome changes can be inherited and others arent.
Technically, if it's a genetic disorder, we can always test for it during pregnancy, but unless something seems to be wrong, we wont do it. So you theoretically could tell for some, but practically wont.

Bastardized the name of the disorder. Lesch Nyhan Syndrome. Scary thing is most are completely of sound mind and intelligence. They will ask to be restrained to stop themselves because they cannot stop themselves on their own.

The New Yorker has a great article about Lesch Nyhan called An Error in the Code. Basically they engage in self injurious behavior and harm to others and they can’t control themselves. A lot of them bite off their own fingers.

I understand what you mean. Not nice she died but it's also not nice she was born in the first place. From the video I really couldn't tell because it was long and I skipped some of it because it was horrifying to keep looking at it but was she completely retarded and all the 'yes' button were just coincidence or had she a bit of awareness? Also lol at how they made a horrible looking plush to resemble her.

Supposedly she had Rett syndrome but nobody else with Rett syndrome looks like that. Also apparently people with Rett syndrome often reach adulthood. At least in its normal form, people with it have at least some intelligence, although it degenerates. So kids might develop language and then lose it with increasing brain damage. It's pretty fucking horrible even in the form where you don't look like Predator.

None of the people I worked with with Rett Syndrome had facial deformities, I don't beleive there are specific facial difference that are a part of the disorder. Its possible she had two distinctive disorders. Considering she had facial and limb anomalies I wonder if it was a form of Ambiotic Band Syndrome. They do state though she had seizures and would aspirate constantly.

Syphilis also used to be a major factor in children born with various impairments back in the day. It was responsible for a lot of kids being born blind, or mentally impaired. This only really changed with the modern era of antibiotics post-WW2. Poor or total lack of medical treatment during pregnancy or birth also produced a lot of problems, kids born deprived of oxygen to the point of retarding them severely. This still happens even in hospitals though and is generally cause for payouts of millions due to medical incompetence.
I think the big difference between now and say, even as little as 30-40 years ago is simply medicine has improved beyond all recognition and just like they can extend life in old age to the point of producing a living corpse with no quality of life, and the other end of life, babies that would have died early or never been born alive in the first place are saved and have to live with the severe disabilities and mental impairments that otherwise would have killed them.
Even kids with Downes Syndrome often died as babies in the past as most have major heart defects amongst other medical issues and this could not be addressed before the era of heart surgery. As you say, prematurity is a huge driver of mental and physical impairments and babies are saved now at stages of development that would have assured death in the past, even 30-40 years ago.
I believe the Dutch system introduced some rule a decade or so back about not actively/intensivly treating babies under 24/25 weeks due to the insane costs and poor prognosis in such cases.
There are also more IVF births, which mean more multiple births and the risks to those of various issues are higher due to the more babies,the lower the birth weight and the lower the birth weight, the more impaired the child in the long run. That's why when you get idiots who get 8 eggs shoved in there to increase their chances of conception during IVF are advised to abort a significant number of fetuses if they are (un)lucky enough to get all or most of them implanting.
FAS and drug abuse are huge factors now in producing special needs kids. But I really think the main thing is so many survive now due to medical advances and are not hidden away anymore, so we are much more aware of them. Even stuff like epilepsy was considered a major stigma and a sign of familial inherited definciency back in the earlier 20th century, was generally untreatable and people with it tended to be shunted away to institutions and the condition kept very much on the down low. King George V of the British royal family had a son, Prince John, born in 1905, who developed epilepsy as a young child and who died at age 13 of it. He was rarely seen in public after a certain age because of it. It was untreatable and stigmatised and altough the boy was treated kindly, the condition was not publicised. Of course now it;'s debated whether John had autism as well because of his apparent learning difficulties and social quirks ... of course seizures are often co-morbid with autism so who the hell knows ...

Ill say one thing for Malibu Ken and his parade of mongs... he's showcased so many individuals with freakish and unusual syndromes, that I can now "diagnose" even some of the rarest conditions at a glance.
Below is a news story and video about a baby girl described as having a rare form of dwarfism. As soon as I read that headline and saw her picture on the video's thumbnail, I knew she suffered from a horrible condition called Thanatophoric dwarfism. It's not something I'd ever come across in real life, but her features were extremely similar to those of a kid named Samuel Mann, who has the same thing. He was interviewed on SBSK about three years ago. Well his parents were interviewed..he just sort of babbled incoherently and every so often made vocalizations that his parents claimed were actual words. His biggest skills were eating cheerios one at a time and breathing through lungs that sounded as if they were packed with snot the consistency of wet cement. Chris meanwhile, did his usual schtick of pretending to be totally delighted with his awesome new friend.
Anyway, the mother of the baby girl with the condition says her child is a miracle because she was supposed to die at birth and she's lived a whole six months. She hasn't been out of the hospital for one moment of those six months. At the age when most babies are sitting up on their own and starting to learn to crawl, she's splayed out on her back, trussed up to a bunch medical equipment. If and when her mom does bring her home, a mini hospital will have to be set up for her. She's already had several operations and will have more in the future if she continues to survive. I dont know how anyone else feels, but that all doesn't exactly sound like my definition of a miracle.
The girl's situation is similar to so many of the kids that are discussed in this thread, in that she's alive in the clinical sense- and while she's not a total vegetable, she has little to no quality of life to look forward to. If Samuel Mann represents the most optimum example of Thanatophoric dwarfism there is, the best this little girl can hope for is spending her days on a couch, snorting, drooling, wheezing and if she's lucky, being hand fed the occasional treat like a goat in a petting zoo.
If anyone was wondering if the mom knew about the daughter's condition before she had her, the story says that the mother was given the news when she was about 20 weeks pregnant.

BTW, apropos of the discussion some were having here a few posts up about older parents, his mother and father look about the same age as that autism kid's parents. I have no idea if the occurrence of this type of dwarfism increases with older parental age, but since it's caused by a novel mutation, it wouldn't surprise me.

I’ve also seen that baby girl with thanatophoric dwarfism on Instagram. I had to Google it because I’d never seen a child with dwarfism with such incredibly short limbs before. It turns out that it’s named “thanatophoric” from the Greek for "death bearing".
So that’s pretty much all you need to know about the prognosis for that child.

It is not a miracle it is only due to the progress of medical science that suffering beings with less function than an earthworm are being kept alive.
And honestly in a country where vets and other people die because of quality of health care, I don't think it's progress to spend hundreds of thousands on one person that 30 or so years ago we would have been more humane to...made them comfortable until they passed.
