Holocaust memorial with 'victim ashes' erected in Berlin

German activists who installed the memorial say it contains a soil sample with the human remains of Holocaust victims. The group wants to send a message to Angela Merkel's conservatives: Don't work with the far-right.

An art installation that claims to contain the ashes of Nazi victims appeared outside Germany's parliament on Monday.

The memorial is part of a new campaign launched by art-activist collective Zentrum für Politische Schönheit (Center for Political Beauty) called "Come look for us!"

The group says it spent two years digging up soil and testing rivers near areas where the "Nazis perfected and industrialized mass murder."

"At one of the horrific sites we found ashes and bone char a meter deep. This column contains the sample from this soil that has been preserved for all eternity."

Dubbed the "Resistance Column," the solemn gray cylinder is partly illuminated from the inside with an orange light — giving viewers a chance to look at the soil sample contained inside.

Defending against criticism about desecrating human remains, the group said in a statement: "There were no graves where we sampled the soil."

A message to Merkel's conservatives

Although the activist artists say the memorial is designed to remember Holocaust victims, it's also intended to send a message to German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives about the dangers of working with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

"The only likely path to power for the AfD is through the conservatives," the Center for Political Beauty said.

Merkel's center-right Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) have ruled out working with the far-right on a national and state-wide level.

At the local level, however, the success of the AfD has led some CDU politicians to team up with the far-right. Recently, a group of CDU politicians in the eastern state of Thuringia called for talks with "all democratically elected parties."

The Center for Political Beauty said it picked the location for its Holocaust memorial carefully. Located between the Bundestag and the chancellery, the artwork stands where the Kroll Opera House once stood — the site where German members of parliament gave dictator Adolf Hitler virtually unlimited authority in 1933.

Jewish community calls memorial 'problematic'

The Central Council of Jews in Germany said although it welcomes political protests to combat the rise of the far right, the memorial in Berlin raises several concerns.

"From a Jewish perspective, the Center for Political Beauty's latest campaign is problematic because it violates Jewish religious law about not disturbing the dead," council president Josef Schuster told DW in a statement.

He noted that if the human remains in the soil sample are actually Jewish victims of the Holocaust, then Jewish religious leaders need to be consulted on the best way to deal with those remains.

"It would be a welcome gesture if a rabbi were consulted when dismantling the 'Resistance Column' in order to ensure at least a respectful and correct handling of the ashes according to halacha," Schuster added.

Police have only granted permission for the memorial to remain in place until Saturday. The activists have put out a call for collections so they can pour concrete to make the memorial permanent.

Searching for remains

The Center for Political Beauty said it collected over 240 samples from 23 locations across Germany as well as in previously Nazi-occupied areas in Poland and Ukraine.

Lab results found traces of human remains in over 70% of the samples, the group said in a statement.

The samples were taken from areas near Auschwitz, Sobibor, Treblinka and other sites of Nazi German concentration camps where the ashes and remains of victims were spread in nearby fields and rivers.

At Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, over 1.1 million victims — including some 1 million Jewish prisoners — were killed. The ashes of hundreds of thousands of bodies were disposed of in the lakes and grounds surrounding the camp.

The artists' collective is known for its headline-grabbing protest pieces — particularly for setting up a replica of Berlin's Holocaust memorial outside the house of AfD politician Björn Höcke in 2017.

Earlier that year Höcke dubbed the memorial in Berlin as a "monument of shame" and has called for a reversal of Germany's culture of remembrance surrounding the Holocaust.

A...bold idea, as a protest, however the general reaction to this brilliant act of corpse desecration doesn't seem to be what our wacky heroes anticipated...

A German activist group has apologised for displaying what it claimed to be Holocaust victims' ashes in a memorial near the German parliament in Berlin.

The Centre for Political Beauty (ZPS) opened the anti-Nazi installation on Monday to mobilise the public against modern-day far-right extremism.

Now it says it will cover up the transparent urn containing ashes.

The work was criticised by some Jewish leaders and the International Auschwitz Committee, who found it insensitive.

The Nazis dumped their victims' ashes in fields and rivers close to the death and concentration camps where they died.

The ZPS said the urn contained victims' remains that it had unearthed from 23 sites near former Nazi camps in Germany, Poland and Ukraine.

The group's makeshift memorial also carries the slogan "Remembering means Fighting".

In a statement on its website, ZPS said: "We want to apologise sincerely to those affected, the survivors and their relatives, whose feelings we hurt."

"In particular we want to apologise to the Jewish institutions, associations or individuals who feel that our work disturbed the peace required for the dead, according to the Jewish religion," it said.

Historians say the Nazis killed about one million Jews at the vast Auschwitz-Birkenau camp complex, along with 300,000 others, most of them Poles and Soviet prisoners-of-war.

Chancellor Angela Merkel is to visit Auschwitz - in what was Nazi-occupied Poland - on Friday for the first time. She has previously visited Buchenwald and Dachau - two other notorious Nazi camps.

The Nazis murdered an estimated six million Jews at camps and mass execution sites.

The ZPS statement expressed horror at the Nazi atrocities.

"Our work, our whole political and artistic activity, is driven by outrage at the Nazis' crimes, whose goal was to deny their victims all dignity," the statement said (in German).

The installation stands on a site opposite the Berlin Reichstag where, in March 1933, German MPs voted to give the Nazi dictatorship sweeping powers. At that time they met in the Kroll Opera House, which was demolished in 1951 because of severe war damage.

Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said that "from a Jewish perspective, the Centre for Political Beauty's latest campaign is problematic because it violates Jewish religious law about not disturbing the dead".

Speaking to Deutsche Welle, he said the group should have consulted a rabbi before taking the soil samples.

Charlotte Knobloch, another Jewish community leader in Germany, said the action "was meant to be provocative but is in fact only tasteless, tactless and irreverent".

In 2017 the ZPS set up an imitation of Berlin's Holocaust Memorial outside the house of far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician Björn Höcke. He had earlier criticised the memorial as a "monument of shame" - triggering fears that he was trying to rehabilitate the Nazis.

Thoughts, my fellow Kiwis?

Look, I don't want germans to hate themselves or their country. But the holocaust happened whether you like it or not, and the evidence for that fact is overwhelming. Hitler himself stated that he would exterminate the Jews of Europe if a second world war ever started. Germans have a duty to prevent a third European catastrophe because Germany started the previous two catastrophes. It's simple.
You really are a dumb disingenuous dipshit if you're coming in here deliberately pretending that any of this is actually about denying that the holocaust happened. If you thought bigotry was a problem instead of an opportunity to hold minorities down so you can profit off of their real history of suffering by gaining material to virtue signal about, how about you address the defilement of Jewish burial customs by non-Jews so that they can selfishly virtue signal.

I'm guessing it's just ash from the artist's fireplace.
It looks like contents of my vacuum after spring cleaning. Honestly the whole display is tasteless and we really need to bring pillories and whippings back as punishments for exceptional shit like this.

How? The previous war had never been called "the first world war" until during the second one, wasn't it?

I know he said he planned to hang all jews in munich; it's just that your statement seems anachronistic.

It also doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would he only want to do so if a war started?

President Trump has launched efforts to bring the Taliban to America.
I’m no Trump fan by any means, but fucking what?

Stopping foreign intervention in the Middle East might not make the Middle East like us any more (most likely they’ll just start to lump us in with the rest of “the evil west” jnstead of us specifically being eviler than evil) but I doubt it’ll make things actively worse for us

Does Germany have any polemic thought leaders equivalent to Al Franken? He openly despises the Jews and our leftists don't care one bit, they could get him to dig up all the jew skeletons they like and parade them around for whatever political soapboxing they want and if he's like how the Democrats treat Franken then Germany's leftists wouldn't say boo about it.

The lenience towards Al Franken may have something to do with the fact that he is a comedian who happens to be Jewish himself, I would think.

Damn it, I meant Al Sharpton! I corrected my original post.

And that might have something to do with the fact that they don't want Sharpton to rabble rouse African-Americans against the Democratic Party. He could dig up a lot of skeletons about the Party.

I thought I know bad taste, but this is on a whole diffent level. Did any of the chucklefuckers stop for a second and thought “hey, this may make us look like assholes, let’s not do it”

Actually Austria-Hungary and Serbia started WWI, if we're being pedantic here. Germany was allied with Austria-Hungary at the time and got saddled with the blame post-war since Austria-Hungary ceased existing.

If you want to be pedantic:

Austria’s ambassador to Germany, Ladislaus Szogyeny-Marich, passed Hoyos’ two documents to the kaiser over lunch on July 5, in Potsdam. Wilhelm was outraged by Franz Ferdinand’s murder, and felt a sense of personal loss: the two had met at the archduke’s country estate just two weeks before the assassination to discuss the situation in the Balkans. Though he initially demurred and said he needed to consult the German chancellor, Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg, he eventually—when pressed by the ambassador—responded with uncharacteristic decisiveness, promising Germany’s “faithful support” for Austria-Hungary in whatever action it chose to take towards Serbia, even if Russia intervened.

The kaiser’s pledge, which historians have referred to as the carte blanche or “blank check” assurance, marked a decisive moment in the chain of events leading up to the outbreak of the First World War in Europe during the summer of 1914. Without Germany’s backing, the conflict in the Balkans might have remained localized. With Germany promising to support Austria-Hungary’s punitive actions towards Serbia, even at the cost of war with Russia, whose own powerful allies included France and Great Britain, the possible Balkan War threatened to explode into a general European one.

Germany's offer of unconditional support for Austria-Hungary in the weeks leading up to the war is the only reason the Austrians had the stones to make impossible demands of Russian-allied Serbia. If Germany had instead been ambivalent, or attempted to defuse the situation, WWI doesn't happen (or at least it doesn't start in July 1914). They're at least as guilty as everyone else involved.

Wait, are you serious? I'm sorry but you have clearly never bothered to educate yourself about Hitler. He always referred to WW1 as the world war. He called ww2 "the second world war" many times before his suicide. And he did threaten to annihilate the Jewish people if they succeed in starting a second world war. Do you deny that Hitler made this threat?

Do you deny that Hitler threatened to annihilate the Jews of europe should the Jewish international financiers succeed in once more plunging the nations of Europe into a world war? If you do deny that, then I urge you to educate yourself about Hitler, because you are clueless.

Offtopic Historical Spergery about Germany and whether or not they deserve the blame for WWI.

I'm not so sure that Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire deserve all the blame for starting WWI, or at the very least, the assassination of the Archduke merely accelerated an inevitability. It's likely that without the German alliance, Austria-Hungary would not have attempted such overt action against Serbia.

[Remember Serbia is allied with the Russian Empire, who have their own alliances with France, who again have their own alliances with Great Britain]

At the time, unlike Great Britain and France, the German Reich and the Austro Hungarian Empire, despite both being "empires" did not have vast stretches of overseas colonial territory. For a while, this policy was deliberately calculated on part of the Germans, "Why waste money and manpower on wars on other continents when we can use our prestige, influence and might on the European continent instead?" (Realpolitik) (At least that was Bismarck's understanding of it at any rate).

(Bismarck alone deserves a bit more of a mention, before I move on, considering he saw where things were heading [especially with Wilhelm II as the Kaiser] In 1888, he writes on the next great European war, saying "some damnable foolish things in the Balkans will set it all off" which, given what was going to happen, is quite prophetic.)

{I really should do a longer series of posts on who he was and what he actually did because he's one of those utterly brilliant statesmen that the world rarely sees}

But anyway, Bismarck gets himself fired by Wilhelm II. See, Wilhelm II had ambitions for a newer, grander, and crucially, more colonial Germany. In other words, Germany was no longer pursuing the carefully crafted web of alliances it was under Bismarck's realpolitik, now they're pursuing a policy known as weltpolitik.

There's a famous quote, I think, that exemplifies this policy shift, in a debate in the Reichstag, the German foreign minister had this to say

"Mit einem Worte: wir wollen niemand in den Schatten stellen, aber wir verlangen auch unseren Platz an der Sonne'"
Translated from German, it reads,
""In one word: We wish to throw no one into the shade, but we also want our own place in the sun." (You German kiwis can check if this translation's accurate)

Or in other words, Germany is now going to take steps to ensure their dominance on a world scale.

Do note the absolute penis envy on display here and the nation that Germany wants a place alongside with is the British Empire. Therefore, they're going to do everything in their power to counter and weaken Britain and British dominance.

(I'll continue with this later, but TLDR: Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to be a world power equivalent of the British Empire,)

Jesus, calm your tits and reread what I wrote. I don't think his intentions depended on whether there was a world war or not, considering he said he would hang all jews of munich if he had the power to do so, before he had any power (in his conversation with joseph hell).

I looked it up and you're right that he did call it a weltkriege, at least in mein kampf. I didn't think it was called that until during the second world war, but I suppose it was mainly britain that called it "the great war" at first instead of a "world war". Serves me right for trusting BBC programs about the subject.

Your "denial" questions don't really a warrant a response to be honest. I have never stopped beating my wife, because she has never stopped running her mouth.

Considering you're speaking English, which is the linguistic equivalent of stitching three autistic midgets together to try and make a person, that's fucking hilarious.

You've got it backwards. Hitler is powered by references to him of any kind, so the public grovelling about how evil he was is just channeling more energy into him. Think about it, Hitler is one of the most famous names around right now. He's more famous than Napoleon, Ramses the 2nd, and Augustus Caesar. He's more famous than many of his contemporaries like Chamberlain, Mussolini, and De Gaulle.

The TLDR is that Hitler is getting more powerful and the zombie Fourth Reich will rise once critical mass is attained.
I had a thought about that actually. They say every man dies twice, first when his heart stops beating, and again when his name is spoken for the last time. Therefore it is in the interests of any man concerned with living as long as possible to be as despicable as possible in order to ensure his name keeps being used forever.

Every time we invoke the name Hitler to compare how evil our enemies are, we give him a power boost as he continues his campaign to conquer all of the netherworld.

When i put my human skin collection on display everyone is horrified but when the krauts do it its brave and stunning
Fuck em

show me a single bit of proof showing that it actually happened, show me some proof that there was a german plan to exterminate all jews and show me proof that it actually happened.
