So 25k was typical in the run up to the spawn run to 300. You only got marketing promoting it up on 296-301 [My shop didnt even order spawn until 295.]
So what that means is conservatively you have about 13k people ordering spawn. A comic thats been in circulation since the 90s. Vs @FROG who got to 9kish (roughly)
Thats a heck of a first act.
In the past year, McFarlane had sold at least 742,020 comics when counting only the numbers I listed above.
During that time Ethan Van Sciver sold 8,566 issues of Cyberfrog. Then had to do variant covers and other gimmicks to keep reselling the same comic.
But if you want a great 1st act, look back in 1991. Spawn #1 had no variant covers and sold 1.7 million copies and at that time Todd McFarlane had been a professional comic book artist less than 10 years. He had not been chased out of mainstream comics for unprofessional conduct. He did not start wars with customers. And once he became his own boss He was not a year late on his comics. He was an adult. He got his ass out of bed and worked. He got things done. He was an industry powerhouse then and now.
Ethan Van Sciver's first act - 8,566 backers paid him upfront to do a job. He took the money and played with it...like a little kid would do. He screwed over every one of those backers. Many of those backers will never order from him again. That is a disastrous first act.
Todd McFarlane got where is he by working like a disciplined adult. Something Ethan Van Sciver just can not do. So it's not a matter of just being good or being more popular with comic book fans. It's a matter of having the character and drive to earn being good and being more popular with comic book fans.
