1984 is a book i used to like, but now every r.etard quotes 1984 or accuses someone of "doublespeak" or makes a comment about how "1984 was a warning, not an instruction manual!" at every little thing and now i just hate it and want to burn every copy of 1984 i can find.
 
For me it's the entire Harry Potter series. I loved reading them growing up, but all the fully grown adults who still like them and act like they're legitimate, quality literature is absurd. The writing quality isn't even particularly good for a children's book. I've gone back and read them (moderately) recently out of curiosity and I had to force myself through them, especially past the third book. It's such a miserable slog that I wouldn't recommend them to anyone above the age of 12. Every time someone my age brings them up and starts gushing I want to Avada Kedavra my brain stem, it's like all the women in their late 20s who never shut up about Disney movies made for kids.

I used to really like The Dresden Files series. Tried going back to reread them recently and just couldn't get into them like I used to. The sense of humor just feels very Joss Whedon-y, and I've outgrown I guess is the best word to use (although that sounds more snobby than I'd like to say) that kind of humor.

I can't believe I once liked White Noise by Don DeLillo either. Fucking hell that guy is a pretentious twat, and that novel in particular is nothing but postmodern fart huffing faggotry.

He gets awful complacent after he eats it.
It's like he conveniently forgets why he didn't want it in the first place.

Oh yeah I forgot I started my political journey as a lolbertard, so The Fountainhead. Ayn Rand's philosophy is so simple you get it pretty early on and tbh her novels are slogs for it. Unlike Atlas Shrugged though, I feel like the story of The Fountainhead has the potential for greatness.

Oh fuck, this one too. Atlas was such a fucking dire slog, but The Fountainhead did have potential as a novel. Anything by her became a running joke though in the late 90's / early 2000's if it wasn't already.

edit: The film was better than the book for once.

Another one of mine: Man In The High Castle. Used to love that book, and it was one of Dick's more accessible novels. After the TV series came out though, it just had a load of muppets praising it, but never reading the book. (Never saw the TV series, not a fan of those American series that go on for years rather than hours, completely disregarding the source material, with multiple "cliffhangers", like Walking Dead, Gotham etc.). Love original American stuff, but hate those types of shows.

I know that's totally not the book's fault, and Verhoeven completely missed the point, but still...
 
Old Man's War was a nice read when i picked it up first with it's comparisons on just how alien aliens can be, but currently Scalzi is an insufferable careercow, the book is filled with the most hamfisted metaphors possible (now that my english is getting better), and he gutted Heinlein's excellent Starship Troopers book like muslim in a Chinese organ farm.

Verhoeven admitted once that he only skimmed the book because he was bored by it, he just wanted to make a 'spacenazis' fight the spiderbugs' movie.

The only reason I never liked Starship Troopers the movie was when it was originally released on DVD in the 90's (It was one of the first 50 or so films to be released) you had to flip it over half way through the film, because it was a double sided single layer DVD. When I was watching it in bed it was a ball-ache. The film isn't much like the book, but still an enjoyable action film if you take it for what it is. The sequels though... Oh boy. At least they have kept Casper in work for long after his career went tits up.
 
Nobody I've talked to in college or OTI remembers this, but Geronimo Stilton was nearly as big as Diary of a Wimpy Kid at my elementary school in the late '00s. One of the best moments of third grade was getting picked to be the first to read this book the day it came out.

Looking back, it's pretty cringey how much the books were begging to be made rule 34 of. Apparently the thing exploded into an entire franchise this decade. I really wonder how many young furfags are getting "inspired" by those books :cringe:
 
Lord of the Rings: Friendship is Magic. What a fucking social justice psy-op. Robert E. Howard died and left the genre populated by life-affirming muscular barbarians and big-titted princesses in distress, and literally the next year fucking Tolkiencuck writes his shitty testosterone-depleted autistic book where the protagonist is a midget mary sue accompanied by his migdet gay friend. If you look for pure judaism distilled into a work of fiction look no further than Lord of the Rings.
 
I can still like a book even if it does have a large fan base of fucking morons.

I’m going to echo @AnOminous and say Piers Anthony. I read probably a dozen of his books in eighth grade. I think the reason why his work tends to resonate with teenage boys is because they are kinda gross and pervy. At the risk of sounding like an SJW, a lot of his books are EXTREMELY problematic, including one that depicts a consensual sexual relationship between an adult and a five year old, which I thankfully haven’t read. I used to be under the impression that his work started off innocent and then regressed, but an attempt to reread A Spell for Chameleon a decade ago left me shocked at just how depraved it was.
