US President Donald J. Trump Impeachment Megathread - Democrats commit mass political suicide

On September 24th, 2019, Nanci Pelosi did what everyone expected was some exceptional political posturing -- initiating a formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

The initial "charge," such as it was, was "betraying his oath of office and the nation's security by seeking to enlist a foreign power to tarnish a rival for his own political gain." This, amusingly, was after it was discovered and widely reported on that the DNC had contacted the very same foreign power to attempt to tarnish Trump.

Specifically, this was all based on a rumor that Trump had asked the Ukraine to investigate how a prosecutor investigating Joe Biden's son for corruption had gotten fired, and withheld foreign aid until they had agreed. (He did ask the leader of the Ukraine to investigate what happened with the prosecutor, but did not hold up any foreign aid nor threaten anything of the like.)

Around this time, Trump did something they could not, and still cannot, understand: He publicly turned over all the documents. The transcript of the phone call they claimed showed him committing the crime of blackmailing the Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden for him was released, showing that Trump did nothing wrong. The only reaction the radical left had was arguing over the definition of "transcript" and spouting off a conspiracy theory about official state documents being edited.

At the same time, old video evidence of Joe Biden publicly bragging about blackmailing the Ukraine into NOT investigating his son came to light. Yes, this is exactly what they're accusing Trump of doing. The left is nothing if not subtle. Right after this, evidence came to light that Pelosi, Kerry, and Romney's kids had similar fake jobs in the Ukraine, getting paid ungodly amounts of money and embezzling US foreign aid to the Ukraine -- all things that Trump's Attorney General has openly discussed investigating.

By releasing the transcripts, the DNC was tripped up. Instead of being able to leak information from their secret investigation until November 2020, they were forced to play their hand publicly.

And they had no hand to play. The impeachment accusations came from second and third hand sources -- watercooler talk from Unelected Deep State Analysts with Trump Derangement Syndrome, outraged that President Trump refused to obey them when they felt they had a better idea as to how to run Foreign Affairs. Other allegations included that supposedly, the telepathic DNC members working in the state department knew what Trump was thinking (despite him literally saying the exact opposite) or could tell that Trump would do something even worse -- maybe something actually illegal -- in the future, and boy howdy, the imaginary Trump in their minds was a right bastard.

(As an aside, the name of the whistleblower, Eric Ciaramella, has been censored across pretty much all social media, a test run of whatever censorship they're going to enact in the next few months to try and swing the election.)

At the same time, the DNC performed significant amounts of partisan political fuckery to do this all publicly, but unofficially -- preventing the GOP from bringing forth witnesses or questioning the DNC's witnesses, or even reading the double plus secret evidence the DNC supposedly had. Those GOP that did get access to the evidence have confirmed it's a 3 pound 5 ounce nothingburger.

The charges have since mutated, with them initially being changed to "bribery" -- as "bribery" focus groups easier and is easier to spew out on Twitter.

On December 18th, 2019, along party lines and with bipartisan opposition, they finally drafted their articles of impeachment -- first for "Abuse of Power" and second for "Obstruction of Congress." Neither are actually crimes nor are they impeachable offenses, even if they were true -- which the DNC has provided no evidence of, explaining that it's the Senate's job to investigate and find the evidence.

Narrator: It is not the Senate's job to investigate and find the evidence.

The "Obstruction of Congress" charge is particularly egregious, as they are claiming that Trump, by reaching out to the courts to act as mediators in his dispute over the rules with Pelosi, was obstructing her. In other words, Pelosi's stance is that the President must obey her, even if she's being a batshit insane drunk. Many legal scholars, including Alan Dershowitz, have pointed out that this is absolute bullshit.

The latest development as of this writing on December 21th, 2019, is that Pelosi is demanding that the GOP recuse itself, allowing the DNC to reshape the Senate in order to make the process "fair" -- by creating a Kangaroo court. The GOP is refusing outright, as the Senate's role during this is very specifically to take the charges and all the evidence gathered from the house -- which is none -- and vote yes or no on impeachment. They need 2/3rd majority to vote yes, and the DNC does not have the votes.

Pelosi is refusing to send over the articles of impeachment until the GOP allows her to stack the Senate against Trump, an act that Dershowitz as well as Noah Feldman, the DNC's own star legal expert witness, has said is unconstitutional and "a problem," as Trump isn't impeached until the articles have been filed. Meanwhile, the DNC has put the House on vacation until the new year, while the Senate is exploring options including forcing the articles over without Pelosi's ok. Trump and the Senate have both went to the SCOTUS to ask them if any of this is constitutional.

tl;dr: Trump may have found where the Swamp was embezzling US Foreign Aid. Many politician's children working fake jobs for huge amounts of money in the Ukraine, blatantly selling influence. This caused the DNC to freak out and try and headshot Trump. They missed. The Democrats appear to have committed political suicide, making Trump a Martyr and only realizing in the aftermath that they didn't actually get rid of him or even weaken him in any way. They also appear to realize they fucked up and are trying to slow walk it back, keeping the "he's impeached!" victory while not actually having to let anyone read the evidence or have a trial on it.

WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Tuesday that the House would initiate a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump, charging him with betraying his oath of office and the nation’s security by seeking to enlist a foreign power to tarnish a rival for his own political gain.

Ms. Pelosi’s declaration, after months of reticence by Democrats who had feared the political consequences of impeaching a president many of them long ago concluded was unfit for office, was a stunning turn that set the stage for a history-making and exceedingly bitter confrontation between the Democrat-led House and a defiant president who has thumbed his nose at institutional norms.

“The actions taken to date by the president have seriously violated the Constitution,” Ms. Pelosi said in a brief speech invoking the nation’s founding principles. Mr. Trump, she added, “must be held accountable — no one is above the law.”

She said the president’s conduct revealed his “betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”

Ms. Pelosi’s decision to push forward with the most severe action that Congress can take against a sitting president could usher in a remarkable new chapter in American life, touching off a constitutional and political showdown with the potential to cleave an already divided nation, reshape Mr. Trump’s presidency and the country’s politics, and carry heavy risks both for him and for the Democrats who have decided to weigh his removal.

Though the outcome is uncertain, it also raised the possibility that Mr. Trump could become only the fourth president in American history to face impeachment. Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were both impeached but later acquitted by the Senate. President Richard M. Nixon resigned in the face of a looming House impeachment vote.

It was the first salvo in an escalating, high-stakes standoff between Ms. Pelosi, now fully engaged in an effort to build the most damning possible case against the president, and Mr. Trump, who angrily denounced Democrats’ impeachment inquiry even as he worked feverishly in private to head off the risk to his presidency.

Mr. Trump, who for months has dared Democrats to impeach him, issued a defiant response on Twitter while in New York for several days of international diplomacy at the United Nations, with a series of fuming posts that culminated with a simple phrase: “PRESIDENTIAL HARASSMENT!” Meanwhile, his re-election campaign and House Republican leaders launched a vociferous defense, accusing Democrats of a partisan rush to judgment.

“Such an important day at the United Nations, so much work and so much success, and the Democrats purposely had to ruin and demean it with more breaking news Witch Hunt garbage,” Mr. Trump wrote. “So bad for our Country! For the past two years, talk of impeachment had centered around the findings of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, who investigated Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections and Mr. Trump’s attempts to derail that inquiry. On Tuesday, Ms. Pelosi, Democrat of California, told her caucus and then the country that new revelations about Mr. Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, and his administration’s stonewalling of Congress about them, had finally left the House no choice but to proceed toward a rarely used remedy.

“Right now, we have to strike while the iron is hot,” she told House Democrats in a closed-door meeting in the basement of the Capitol. Emerging moments later to address a phalanx of news cameras, Ms. Pelosi, speaking sometimes haltingly as she delivered a speech from a teleprompter, invoked the Constitution and the nation’s founders as she declared, “The times have found us” and outlined a new stage of investigating Mr. Trump.

At issue are allegations that Mr. Trump pressured the president of Ukraine to open a corruption investigation of former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, and his son. The conversation is said to be part of a whistle-blower complaint that the Trump administration has withheld from Congress. And it occurred just a few days after Mr. Trump had ordered his staff to freeze more than $391 million in aid to Ukraine.

Mr. Trump has confirmed aspects of his conversation with the Ukrainian leader in recent days, but he continues to insist he acted appropriately.

The president said on Tuesday that he would authorize the release of a transcript of the conversation, part of an effort to pre-empt Democrats’ impeachment push. But Democrats, after months of holding back, were unbowed, demanding the full whistle-blower complaint and other documentation about White House dealings with Ukraine, even as they pushed toward an expansive impeachment inquiry that could encompass unrelated charges.

President Trump’s personal lawyer. The prosecutor general of Ukraine. Joe Biden’s son. These are just some of the names mentioned in the whistle-blower’s complaint. What were their roles? We break it down.

Ms. Pelosi told fellow Democrats that Mr. Trump told her in a private call on Tuesday morning that he was not responsible for withholding the whistle-blower complaint from Congress. But late Tuesday, the White House and intelligence officials were working on a deal to allow the whistle-blower to speak to Congress and potentially even share a redacted version of the complaint in the coming days, after the whistle-blower expressed interest in talking to lawmakers.

Although Ms. Pelosi’s announcement was a crucial turning point, it left many unanswered questions about exactly when and how Democrats planned to push forward on impeachment.

So you’re willing to forgive anything he does because he pisses people you don’t like off?
Yup!

And you don’t care about the negative impacts he has other people because you think it’s funny they get mad about it?
He hasn't actually done that, but nope!

Wow, okay. Thanks for being honest, I guess.
You're welcome, you condescending little bitch.

I just think it’s fucked up to treat the welfare and future of our country as a spectator sport where the goal is to piss people off. Trump’s policies and behavior have hurt a lot of innocent people, that’s why I don’t like him. If you think that’s funny I don’t know what to say to you.
Oh but you've already had your say, talking down your nose at the plebes who dare to laugh their asses off while a first-time politician wipes the fucking walls with lifelong politicians all cooperating to ruin him.

The only people Trump has hurt are the establishment stooges in congress and embedded like parasites in our government. Everyday Americans are far better off with President Trump than they would have been under Queen Clinton.

Thanks for the other (serious) answers everyone, you’ve given me something to think about.
Don't act so surprised that people aren't just taking condescension like this sitting down anymore. Just lying down and taking it hasn't made things better for anyone, so now we're trying something else. Go get a fucking helmet and enjoy the ride.

It's because the Democrat party has gone completely bug-fuck insane and I'm terrified of them.
I'd argue that both parties have gone off the deep end and they only manage to barely hide it when they're the ones in power while the party that lacks the majority does nothing but scream "We get ALL of the cake or nobody gets any cake!" I feel this state of affairs has been building up slowly since around 2000, but really accelerated in the last 11 or so years. I'm not sure there's much difference between Congress and an insane asylum at this point other than the paychecks and benefits.

I don't hold the republicans as perfect or nothing, don't get me wrong, but I only think one side actively wants to destroy the country as we know it.

Trump’s policies and behavior have hurt a lot of innocent people, that’s why I don’t like him.

Which policies would those be, and who is hurt?

This gets claimed all the time. But never with any specifics. Just this sort of nebulous concept. It's why we joke about "ORANGE MAN BAD" nonsense, because that's all it ever seems to actually amount to.

When the Senate shoots it down, is there anything stopping the crazies in the House from just doing the exact same thing again?

Well Impeachment IS technically a trial and the Senate IS the jury. Chief Justice Roberts would preside as the Judge of this "trial". If they say no then it's just pure double jeopardy at that point, but it involves the highest powers in the land and they already wipe their asses with the law. The drafters of the Constitution made SURE the President had the strongest Executive power.....but only in words. Words and law are easily ignored by drafters of said laws. Hell The Federalists sought to seceded literally less than a decade after the Constitution was ratified because they hated the Jeffersonian-Republicans so much. That "Fear" of Virginia controlling the United States ended up coming true. It was all just a prelude to the Civil War where EVERYTHING the Constitution was ratified to "fix" was undone. The mentality of mob rule took over and "the Republic" died. Now we have this absolutely fucked system of chaos. The US Government can't even manage a goddamn Train company. They'll spend weeks and literally millions of dollars debating on a fucking street sign. If it wasn't for technology innovation and war, the US would have fallen apart DECADES ago.

Maybe a better way to put it is: the condescension is worse than anything Trump does.

Don't take this the wrong way, but the way you just explained your perspective is pretty demeaning.

Yes, part of Trump's appeal is his contrast with the political elites, and there are people who respond to that. The vast majority of Trump supporters are more interested in his economic and federal agenda. People who are against open borders, technology transfer with China, forced diversity, free-trade agreements bankrupting the Midwest, Title IX abuses, an obsolete military, media manipulation, ideologically-motivated judiciaries, the breakdown of the American national identity and anti-white sentiment in particular support him on the grounds of sane and rational policy.

Here's an interesting exercise. Without looking at Google, what is the net change in manufacturing jobs in the US since Trump took office? What is the domestic trade deficit with China and how has it changed since the start of tariffs? What is the net change in defense spending since 2016 and how has this affected military salaries? How many judicial nominees are waiting approval currently?

These are important issues every informed voter should be aware of. Even if you don't know the specific answers, you should have a general idea of the trends for each one. In general, I've found people opposed to Trump either don't know or don't care about any of the answers. A Trump voter tends to know a little about each plus a lot about one.

That's why I don't get how the media portrays Trump supporters as a bunch of knuckle dragging idiots. He may be a moron, but the American people are wise and tend towards decisions that lead to prosperity. Demonizing people who don't share your world view demonstrates a more serious flaw than I've seen with the President.

Yes cause fuck these people. It's either we command the ship or sink it. We let them control it and they'll scuttle it and buttfuck us in the showers forever.

More fun times ahead!

Meanwhile we're in the middle of what amounts to our third straight Presidential term of total Congressional gridlock.

Nobody really talks about that.

Lets be honest though. Congress is fucking useless. Even when they aren't in deadlock they continuously suck their own dicks and eat enough pork to spook another Middle East country to start a war again. That's Congress's REAL talent. Fucking things up. I'd rather trust a literal ROCK than the vigilance of Congressional Committees. They don't fall asleep at the wheel....They DIED at the wheel. We're just all screaming in the back of the car begging the President to un-fuck the situation.

Finally someone gets it. A Southern confederacy could have worked perpetually, but that was this world's last chance to save democracy of any kind. It's all been downhill since the Fall of Richmond.

Lets be honest though. The Confederate Government was buttfucking retarded and ran by the same type of rich assholes that sucked their own dicks and sent men to die for profit. The Civil War wasn't about mainly slavery, it was about the MONEY they made with slaves...even though industrialization was ultimately more profitable for the cotton industry anyway. And States Rights? Yeah that's pure bullshit. It was about rich fucks owning a fuckload of land and slaves. Without even CONSIDERING any plans for Emancipation (such as compensation for their now freed slaves), they just said "fuck you" and left, causing the worst war in US history. I know we love to shout that the yanks needed to get fucked, but the South started the damn war and failed to finish it. The North didn't win, the South just flat out lost.

You are incorrect. The southern confederacy was the most righteous cause to have ever existed and my only regret is that we failed to kill more Yankees. That said, the defeat of the south is regrettable and largely on us.

My regret? Jefferson Davis. Dude was a fucking loon and ran the Confederacy like a damn country club. Only Confederate Generals peak even the Union's respect. Lee is STILL regarded as one of the best Generals to ever live along with an EVEN BETTER General in Stonewall Jackson. The Confederacy Government? Total Frauds.

The short answer is essentially yes. See most die-hard Trump supporters don't actually care about the negative effects his policies have had, and they'll proudly proclaim it before IMMEDIATELY turning around and asking for proof whenever questioned.

Once you provide examples, such as the Muslim ban, the transgender military ban, the continuation of the family separation policy at the border, the attempts at excluding trans people from discrimination protections, the tax cuts that disproportionately benefited the wealthy, the proposal to cut access to food stamps that would effect eligibility for free school lunches, his idiotic tariff war, etc then the goal posts will be inevitably moved to saying:

"Well actually none of that is THAT bad..."

Of course the original argument was to simply provide evidence of harmful things he's done but the goalpost movement to how BAD the things he's done is usually subtle enough. But simply understand that in the end there is really nothing Trump could do to endanger his most fervent supporters. He's a religion essentially. Like God, when he does something they don't understand it was all Part of the Plan, 4D chess, whatever. Doesn't matter that its obvious to anyone with two functioning eyes he's a buffoon.

To the Right, Trump is the purest distillation of their values they've had in decades, and any sacrifice is worth keeping that intact. Its like taking the first hit of a new drug. Its so potent you don't wanna go back to the old stuff. The neocons and boomers in the Republican government apparatus are Old News, stale and bland. They only concede ground to the left. But now here's Trump who doesn't give a fuck. He's addicting. He's like crack for conservatives.

Many right-wingers understand he is essentially the last chance they have before society shifts forward in a way they don't like. That's why they've gone full out, mask-off these past few months, passing abortion bills and rallying together around their Last Great Hope. After Trump conservatism will be officially an endangered species, only able to be sustained through extreme violence. As some have so eloquently put it here he could shit on their lawns and it wouldn't matter because what comes AFTER him scares them to their core.

To refrain from processing this information most Trump supporters have retreated into a sort of reality-distortion field to ignore the fact that their God King is getting impeached. "He didn't do anything wrong, and if he did it wasn't that bad and he actually did it On Purpose". The level of delusion mirrors the delusion of liberals in 2016 that nobody could hurt their Goddess Hillary. It doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense. They believe it because they HAVE to believe it. The alternative is literally to frightening to bear.

As things proceed I look forward to the more die-hard Trumpies here losing their shit. Clown world is actually coming true...but not in the way they wanted I'm afraid.

I disagree with Moo's sentiment, but I am somewhat sympathetic to it. As a libertarian, I'm not a huge Trump fan and I definitely don't forgive everything he does just because he pisses off the left. However I do agree that the left has totally lost its mind, and I understand why Trump's supporters back him when they see the Democrats pushing us further off the cliff -- their misguided green legislation will cripple our economy; their entitlements and social welfare spending are ballooning and threaten to bankrupt us; their mismanagement and refusal to seriously deal with issues like urban blight and homelessness are making our cities look like shit; their constant race-baiting and virulent anti-white sentiment are drastically worsening race relations and alienating good people; their support for regressive ideologies is decreasing our freedoms and social trust; their hostility toward Russia and war-mongering in the Middle East endanger us and waste our blood and money....I could go on and on, but my point is that people who are troubled by the current state of affairs have a real incentive to fight against the dominance of the left. Trump has displayed a formidable willingness to stymy the Democrats, and that's very refreshing to people who feel that the right has spent years limply giving in and selling out.
