I think the reason Bob gets the love he does is because of how he tells Chris to stop posting dumb shit on the Internet and is the closest to normal that Chris shows of his family

The generational gap was a pretty huge factor in how he raised Chris so poorly. Parents who raise special needs children are usually expected to maintain an active involvement with the school, communicating with counselors, and forming connections with other parents in the community who have experience raising an autistic child.
Not only did Bob’s age pretty much make him an outlier to the community, but c’mon, imagine being in your 60s, having already raised two children to adulthood, and then having to undertake the burden of raising a kid with autism. You’re going to fuck up in some capacity. Bob was tired. He tried his best. His backwards views are a relic of the era he grew up in. He has that excuse to fall back on. Barb was younger and had a less stressful life, her career was not particularly demanding when she had one, and did the bare minimum with Cole as well.
If Bob was with any other woman things would’ve turned out much differently.

Chris is not necessarily ugly. He is just about average but he could have worked up towards something a bit more pleasing (and if he improved his attitude, he could have even scored a girl).
But that is the thing, this isnt the case. Chris is a grotestic fat tranny that could have lived a better life if himself and the people that should have cared (not us) actually bothered.
Thats the part of his comedic tragedy.

As someone earlier in the thread pointed out, Bob gets some credit for at least trying to help Chris. He was old, out of touch, and utterly incompetent, but you could tell he at least put in some effort at trying to help his son.
He also managed to successfully raise his other two children to adulthood by the time he met Barb, and as much as people like to decry him for it, I'll even consider Bob putting him on the tugboat to be an example of Bob caring about Chris and trying to do his best. By the time Chris was put on the tugboat, he had already lost his job at Wendy's and got kicked out of PVCC. Putting Chris on SSI was a way for Bob to give Chris some sort of a safety net after he died.
Barb was by all accounts, an abusive and manipulative harpy who was terrible to Cole and was pretty much ostracized by her entire family before Chris was born. At least David Chandler showed up to Bob's funeral, and we know next to nothing about Carol, so it is possible that she wanted to pay her respects, but was unable to go because of distance or something.
Bob was a bad parent due to incompetence. Barb was a bad parent due to malevolence.
Getting back on topic, I think the only photos where Chris looks anywhere near normal or decent would be the photos from when he was a kid and his high school photos. The Carlos Chantor picture is probably the only picture of him taken after the early 2000's where he doesn't look like a complete wreck.

to me Bob seemed the closest there was to a normal parent in that household of madness, Granted due to his age and when he grew up I would say Bob acted more like a grandparent but regardless he seemed to be the most reality grounded one there, just further proved by how after he died with Barb in charge a lot of sanity and reserved antics went out the window

The man was a pretty successful engineer with a decent number of patents under his belt. That takes a measure of self-discipline and skill to achieve, and he also managed to achieve all this despite having a childhood spent in poverty. The hoarding mentality as an adult is a common side-effect of living most of your life without material possessions.

Like others have said, if I saw Chris out looking like he did in his Carlos Chantor photo, or hell, even like he did in the Rollin' n Trollin' video, I wouldn't think twice. Yeah, once he opened his piehole and started talking, most people would walk away. He had the chance to at least look halfway decent though. No one's idea of an Adonis, but I could have seen him hooking up with a girl if he kept up the grooming and effort at not being a complete slob.

I honestly think Classic Chris™ didn't look awful. Greasy and unkempt, to be sure, but not THAT bad physically. He could've passed for normal-ish with a good makeover and some light exercise.

If he exercised even a little and ate right after high school as opposed to thinking "yay I can eat what I want and be as lazy as I want forever now!" He might have at least stayed looking like an average Joe/lovable dork but it wasn't just his deteriorating body it was the fact that hemade cardboard signs like a four year old opening a lemonade stand and never learned how to act like an adult that ultimately led him into being a fat gross troon that he is today
