ODD? 9/10 kids slapped with the ODD label are kids who are being abused (or are otherwise in a toxic situation) and act out accordingly, since that's pretty commonly how abused kids deal with that shit. Definitely wonder if there's some kind of Schofield situation going on where the parents are abusing the kid and trying to get as many labels slapped on him as possible so they can play martyr and act like they're such heroes who do so much for their fucked up kid.

Adoptive parents slap the RAD label on adopted kids who won't follow their rules or meet their expectations. They're the sort that smother children in blankets to rebirth them or put alarms and locks all over the house or just rehome the kid they can't cope with. They could be their own thread on here. Plenty of crazy.

This particular post that I shared has died out. She only got a few replies. Other parents in the group had some posts that got way more attention. The only person who replied said that they need to tolerate his behavior.

Heard about that with Russian/Ukrainian adoptions a few times. Like that story about the 8 or 22 year old, but that story’s it’s own damn mess.

Maybe I’m an idiot asshole, but I’m not totally convinced Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a real thing. It sounds way too much like either a convenient excuse for lack of discipline or a lazy misdiagnosis. Are there any decent source materials/studies about it? Because if it weren’t for parents like these, I’d assume it was just a Tumblr identity token.

I've noticed that too. ODD seems to be the go-to diagnosis for "the issue is with this dysfunctional family and it's effecting the kid but I can't say that to Karen or she'll rip my throat out for daring to criticize her parenting skills", IMO.

A girl even died from that rebirth shit.

RAD is seen a lot in international adoptions due to how neglectful the orphanges were (are?).
That rebirthing and "hug therapy" shit doenst treat RAD at all, I have no idea how it even started as a thing they thought would treat it.
You can't just make a child that has been taught their entire life to not make attachments suddenly make attachments.

One thing interesting with the disorder in terms of behavior is that normal punishments mean nothing to children with this. Time-outs, Removal of items, etc. have no value to a child who has been taught to not make attachments and expects these to happen anyway due to their upbringing.

Just because your kid is a total sped doesn't mean he can behave like a wild animal. Teach your kid how to behave or else he's gonna wind up in a prison.
Or investigate why he's acting out in the first place. The ODD label and martyr behavior of the parents are huge red flags IMHO and I'll bet the way they're treating that kid isn't are great as they think it is.

Unfortunately disabled people are both at super high risk of being abused and authorities often do nothing about it. Especially if it's primarily psychological abuse that's being inflicted.

Isn't there a developmental window that basically closes (due to brain development) after which it's not even possible for the child to ever really have the biological abilityto form normal emotional relationships and attachments? Like by teenage years, it's way, way too late and any adoptive parent who expects even gratitude as they understand it, let alone a grateful child clinging to them as a father or mother figure, is going to be very, very disappointed. I know how many of those Russian adoptions have gone south and it seems to be a lot with religious families who have a high expectation that 'all you need is love' which is entirely untrue, you dumb hippy shits, when you're dealing with people who lacked the correct stimuli at the appropriate junctures and whose cognitive abilities are simply differently fucked as result.

I recall that abused child Genie who was the subject of a lot of study way back in the 1970s and they basically thought then that the fact she was never spoken to and left in the dark alone until the age of 13 totally nullified any chance of her ever properly learning language despite being shown to be actually quite intelligent. after rescue. She could learn words mbut never master a semblence of grammatical structure. Something to do with the plasticity of the brain, or rather lack of it after a point. Language and various other stuff needs to be developed within a timeframe or the kid is developmentally fucked for life.

I believe this is why in the UK, there is now a focus on getting babies out from neglectful junkie/alkie/waster parents who neglect them before the age of six months or so, because if they leave it any longer, the lack of stimulus in those early months is known now to affect their cognitive and social abilities in a way that will likely affect their entire life.

Anyone have any info to correct any of the above, please chime in.

Genie's story is so incredibly sad. Even after she left the horrible clutches of her father not only was she exploited due to her uniquely fucked upbringing, but ultimately wound up in abusive group homes.

I think it’s been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but if you’re brave enough, I recommend the documentary “Child of Rage” (there’s usually a few old recordings of it on YouTube)
Depressing as that case was though, it actually has a happy ending: https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/p...h/news-story/2e8658abcd295a768b4d9d8a73845537

Oh, also, yeah, I guess that article also ends with more evidence that “birthing therapy” is a weird form of abuse in itself. I’m pretty sure I heard something a while ago about some cougar therapist who made an adult client go through birthing therapy because she wanted him to herself.

They may be able to learn to form attachments, but i'm not sure how many studies have been done on it. The returning of children got so bad at one point that Russia and I believe the Ukraine stopped international adoptions from there to the US. There is a good documentary showing that the behaviors can start to occur even in people in their teenage years that suddenly end up in neglectful situations. The girl DeeDee in it is dropped off at the orphanage at 19 years old, and you'll see how the neglect begins effecting her.

Warning this documentary is graphic, the director allows a child with an obviously left to heal on its own and ignored broken leg to be harshly treated. And the interview with the director at the end is insane to show how she rationalizes it all.

Here is the original documentary:
There was a followup here:

As for Genie, I'd reccomend the book or documentary on here there was a lot going on and a lot of unethical things as well. They were so obsessed with experimenting on this girl that they stopped caring of ethics. The critical language period is interesting since though Genie was unable to learn verbal language, she was adept at non-verbal communication. I've read a few articles questioning if they had wanted to help her instead of prove their theory that they beleive she could have been taught more grammar in relation to non-verbal language.

And yes neglect while an infant completely screws up ability to attach and it varies by person how bad it is and how pervasive. Not everyone though loses the ability to form attachments though so there seems to be some resillence factor involved.

Sadly though this documentary isn't a one off you can find similar from all over the world, finding that one again lead me to one in the Ukraine I had never seen. Actually this ones pretty interesting so far the staff DOES want to help the people, but the state is against giving funding for it.

It's seen because adoption attracts people who make Michael Schofield look like Mr. Rodgers

"Attachment Disorder" is an excuse for shitty parents and whacko adoptive parents to abuse their kids to death. It was birthed from the fertile mental loins of Wilhelm Reich, who's better known as the guy who came up with Orgone Energy and some other crazy quack bullshit nobody cares about.

The Rejected Parents thread on SA had a good discussion about RAD, ODD and other ways awful parents schofield their kids for not respecting their divine boomer authority, all kicked off by a herd of fuckin ugly boomers commenting on some news article about how some kid who was nearly starved to death was faking it to get back at their parents.

tl:dr if someone says their kid has RAD it's probably a good idea to call CPS or roll them in a carpet and throw them off a tall bridge.

These parents are shitheads to be sure, but to say that means that "attachment disorder" doesn't exist is like saying cancer doesn't exist because quack doctors use it to pedal woo.

Man, with all the horrific ways people abuse kids and are enabled to keep doing so it almost seems like the literally brainless potatoes are the lucky ones. At least a zombaby without any conciousness can't feel pain or trauma or anything (:_(
