The most disturbing part about this is that Groening himself has admitted that Lisa is something of his self-insert.

Autoerotic foot fetish? Fetish for having underaged kids massage his feet? Or being forced to do so? I dunno.

*Creates a self insert and then have said insert be the least liked person on the show*

That's some special achievement.
In all fairness, Lisa wasn't originally conceived as the creator's self-insert, let alone a political shill for his liberal worldview IIRC. (Disclaimer -- I'm not the most knowledgeable on Simpsons history, so feel free to correct me.)

She was always sort of was a liberal creator's pet, but the older episodes of the show were more than willing to make fun of her. In Lisa's Wedding for example, there are multiple jokes about her vegetarianism (this was before she officially became one in the show), such as Hugh acknowledging their humorlessness about it and the disgusting snack bars she eats. In Hurricane Neddy, when Ned starts going off on the whole town he calls Lisa, "Springfield's answer to a question no one asked." Bart's Comet ends with the town's pollution saving the town and Lisa realizes the irony in having the town's smog save everyone when she just tried petitioning to get clean air.

I guess you could say the rot started with Lisa the Vegetarian; originally the episode was going to end with Lisa going back to a normal diet, but Paul McCartney refused to do the episode otherwise (McCartney's the exact type of humorless vegetarian Lisa's Wedding poked fun at).

Sad thinking Paul's only appearance on the show was because of that.

Weird Al already sounds like the better guy for not letting his vegetarianism dictate what he'd sing.
I remember reading an interview where someone asked Al how he can justify performing at barbecues despite not eating meat and Al responded, "The same way I justify performing at colleges despite not being a student anymore."

We need more entertainers like Weird Al.

I KNEW IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY.

That episode was a David Mirkin showran episode, I knew they wouldn't sissy it down without force.

Kind of want to read Bartkira now.

On the vegetarian Lisa episode, I actually liked it. Even in The Simpsons' prime, it was a breath of fresh air when an episode had a lasting impact on the characters. When I first watched, I was blissfully unaware of McCartney's involvement.

Edit: I searched for it before, but missed it. Apologies for the lateness.
