In July, the French daily newspaper Le Monde reported that the 0.6-mile (1 kilometre) solar road was a fiasco.

In December 2016, when the trial road was unveiled, the French Ministry of the Environment called it "unprecedented". French officials said the road, made of photovoltaic panels, would generate electricity to power streetlights in Tourouvre, a local town.

But less than three years later, a report published by Global Construction Review says France's road dream may be over. Cracks have appeared, and in 2018, part of the road had to be demolished due to damage from wear and tear.

Even at its peak, the road was only producing half of the expected energy, because engineers didn't take into consideration rotting leaves falling on the road.

Here what the road looked like in all of its former glory, and how it got to this point.

It was all smiles and high hopes in 2016, when the world's first solar panel road, called Wattway, opened. France spent US$5.2 million on 0.6 miles (1 kilometre) of road, and 30,000 square feet (3,000 square metres) of solar panels. It was hailed as the longest solar road in the world.

Media gathered around to take a walk down what was thought to be the road of the future. The French minister for energy said she wanted to have solar panels on one mile of road every 621 miles in the country within the next five years.

Despite grey skies on the day of the inauguration, France was leading the world for solar transportation.

But the brake was never removed, and the wheels never started rolling - so to speak.

It was a bold move beginning a solar panel trial in Normandy, France, since the region doesn't have the most sunshine. Caen, a city in Normandy, only has 44 days of strong sunshine in a year. Thunderstorms also reportedly broke solar panels on the road.

The trial road was meant to produce about 150,000 kWh a year, which is enough power to provide light for up to 5,000 people, every day. Instead, it was making just under 80,000 in 2018, and fewer than 40,000 by July 2019.

Colas, the company that built the road, said in 2016 that the solar panels were covered with resin containing sheets of silicon to make them capable of withstanding all traffic. But since the opening, panels have come loose or broken into little pieces.

In May 2018, 300 feet (90 metres) of the road had to be demolished since it wasn't salvageable.

The engineers also didn't take into account the effects of leaves, which caused damage and limited the amount of electricity the panels could produce. They also didn't think about the pressure and weight from tractors, two locals told Le Monde.

And now the trial looks like it's all over. Wattway's managing director Etienne Gaudin told Le Monde that it would not be going to market.

"Our system is not mature on long distance traffic," he said. The company would focus on creating electricity for smaller things, like CCTV cameras and lighting bus shelters.
A damn shame, really. I think it's a pretty cool idea, it just needs to evolve over time.

As a gearhead, by the time this technology is perfected, I wonder if burnouts would be even more illegal than what they currently are?

 
Why not put them on the side of the road where they'll only be driven on occasionally instead of constantly? What a retarded idea.

Why the hell would you want to put the solar panels on the road. Even if it's feasible, it's a lot more expensive to make them resilient to traffic. Even if you can do that, heavy consistent traffic blocks the panels and lowers efficiency.

Here's what they do in countries that aren't completely retarded: Bike lane down center of Korean highway is covered with solar panels

the idea was to use the space already cleared for the road as a power generation unit. That way they wouldn't need to do a massive redo of the road system and could just replace the road itself and not need to move anything.

For those who dont want to watch that ultrasperg Thunderf00t's series on this shit, basically the sheer expense of this idea in practice in the US alone to rip up every fucking road and replace every square inch with glass and delicate and expensive electrical componants would be IIRC greater than the amount of money that actually exists on the planet right now, and thats before you get to the fact it would require more electronic component resources than exist in the global market....and thats before you consider how a road made of fucking glass and plastic would be ripped apart by friction within literal days if not hours since there is a really good fucking reason why roads are made out of asphalt given how much erosion tyres and vehicles cause on roads.

And all this just to achieve the grand result of having LED road signs and parking dividers that light up at night as opposed to turning on your freakin headlights....jesus fucking christ they got MILLIONS donated for this embarrassing pig swill

Solar is a completely dead end as far as energy production goes. Only scientific illiterates and idiots believe it can work.
Honestly and without hyperbole it may well be the single most fucktarded energy production idea in human history. Like even fucking new agey "lets just generate electricity by meditation and rhythmic chanting to commune with the spirit world" shit atleast has the advantage of not tanking every world economy and causing minor traffic accidents to skin people alive on broken glass and...god there is just so much stupid shit about this idea

Are ganna just ignore the fact that solar panels are made of toxic metals? So every 10-20 years (probably less) when we need to replace the entire road with new panels we just poison the ground.

The problem is that nothing, not even waste energy, comes for free. Installing generating devices and keeping them running would add to the costs of road maintenance. And engineers might be tempted to design the roads to vibrate just a little more than otherwise so as to increase the efficiency of the harvesting—thus causing the roads to crumble even faster. The true economic break-even point would be hard to estimate, and it might be all too easy for piezoelectric proponents to convince themselves that they’re getting a free lunch when they aren’t.

It’s all been tried before. Back in 2010, we covered a similar pilot project by the Israeli startup Innowattech, whose apparent success caught the eye of a California state legislator, who proposed the project for his state. But Innowattech is now going out of business.
If you need a tl;dr: Laws of physics still apply. So no.
