Law Paul Manafort Sentenced to 47 Months in Prison

A Virginia federal judge Thursday sentenced President Trump former campaign chairman Paul Manafort to 47 months in prison for bank and tax fraud.

Manafort’s sentence is the longest imposed on anyone connected to the president on charges brought in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Still, it was well short of the 24 years in prison he faced under federal sentencing guidelines. U.S. District Court Judge T. S. Ellis III called the guidelines “excessive” and imposed a sentence he said matched other bank and tax fraud cases.

“It is a just sentence and I have satisfied myself about that,” he said.

Judge Ellis also criticized prosecutors from Mueller’s office for seeking the maximum penalty sentence, which ranged between 19 and 24 years.

“The government cannot sweep away the history of all these previous sentences,” he said.

Manafort, who was wheeled into the court wearing a green prison jumpsuit, told the court that he was “humiliated and shamed.”

“The past two years have been the most difficult years for my family and I,” he told the court in a brief statement.

He asked Judge Ellis to show mercy, adding that he “feels punished by the proceedings already.”

Yet, he did not apologize for his crimes or admit guilt. Instead, he thanked the judge for his fairness during the trial. Judge Ellis said he was surprised that Manafort’s statement did not include an apology.

Prosecutors pushed for the maximum sentence and fines before Judge Ellis handed down his sentence. They argued Manafort never gave helpful information during his more than 50 hours of interviews with Mueller’s team.

“The reason we met for 50 hours was because he lied,” prosecutor Greg Andres said. “He told us 50 hours of things we already knew. It certainly wasn’t 50 hours of information that was useful.”

Manafort’s attorneys have disputed that he lied to prosecutors, but focused their argument on how similar offenders received less than the maximum sentences.

“Tax evasion is by no means jaywalking, but it’s not drug trafficking,” Thomas Zehnle, a Manafort attorney said.

Thursday’s sentence marks a stunning fall for Manafort, a longtime political operative who advised American presidents and foreign dignitaries. He spent decades as a lobbyist amassing high-profile political connections and raking in millions of dollars in income.

In August, a federal jury convicted him on two counts of bank fraud, five counts of tax fraud and one count of failing to declare a foreign bank account. The jury deadlocked on 10 other charges.

The Alexandria, Virginia, jury found Manafort guilty of failing to report $16.5 million in income he earned in the Ukraine on behalf of the country’s former, Russian-backed president, Viktor Yanukovych.

He also was found guilty of dodging taxes on that income, failing to register as a foreign lobbyist, and providing false financial information to obtain more favorable bank loans.

None of the crimes for which Manafort was convicted stems from his time with the Trump campaign, however. Judge Ellis made a point to emphasise that none of Manafort’s crimes are connected to the Russian collusion allegations Mr. Mueller is probing.

“He is not before the court for any allegations that he, or anyone at his direction, colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election,” he said.

Manafort, 69, is expected to receive additional prison time next week when he is sentenced in a separate hearing next week in Washington. He has been sitting in jail since June, when federal prosecutors said he tampered with two potential witnesses in a criminal case against him.

In September, Manafort pleaded guilty to similar charges in the Washington case, avoiding a second trial.

When witness tampering charges were added to the Washington indictment in June, the judge overseeing the case revoked Manafort’s bail. He has been in jail since then.

Manafort would have been eligible to receive a lighter sentence had he stuck with the deal offered to him by Mr. Mueller’s team after he pleaded guilty in Washington.

Instead, the deal was revoked after U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson concluded he lied to Mr. Mueller’s prosecutors and investigators.

In the Washington case, Manafort pleaded guilty two conspiracy counts. He also admitted his guilt to the 10 counts in Virginia in which the jury could not reach a verdict.

He will be sentenced in that case next Wednesday, when he could face the maximum sentence of 10 years in total for his crimes.

Judge Jackson must decide whether Manafort will serve the two sentences simultaneously or whether they will be served consecutively. Mr. Mueller’s team has not taken a position on how to construct the two likely prison terms.

Still, Manafort’s former boss could spare him from spending the rest of his life in prison. In November, Mr. Trump told the New York Post that he would not rule out a pardon for Manafort.

Curiously, despite all of the news outlets repeatedly insisting that the evidence against Paul Manafort vis-à-vis "Russian Collusion" was just about as rock-solid as you could hope to find, Judge Ellis went out of his way today to specifically state that Manafort's sentence had nothing whatsoever to do with any election tomfoolery, and was rather purely centered around his tax schemes and banking fraud.

If you're the kind of person who likes to kick back with some popcorn and a beer and watch people shriek like lunatics, now's a fantastic time to go to Twitter and check out the #Manafort hashtag. It's full of very, very angry people.

Its almost like this entire 'Russia' delusion is just a massive witch-hunt, with nothing but accusations in search of evidence for a fantasy.

This dude actually did commit a crime....since the FED's are calling the shots.

But yeah, Trump was right. He's not wrong in saying it's a witch hunt just out of pure hatred.

I like all the people claiming this demonstrates the white supremacist bias of the government using crystal mason as proof - because Mason is being imprisoned for 10 months for 'accidentally' voting.

It shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's all bullshit. Mason is going back to prison for violating her parole - true, 10 months seems like an excessive response to voting wrong, but she was released two years before the end of her sentence, so 10 months for a parole violation is actually not bad. Also note that despite the attempt to also paint this as a class issue - big evil rich manafort vs poor benighted black lady - Mason is by no means poor, and was arrested for over $4 million tax evasion.

So wait, the russian judge locked manafort up for not helping trump rig the election right?

He got lucky on this you or I would be hit a lot harder for the tax shit.

This is pure awesomeness. I'm now more excited for the Mueller findings! He will clearly be: a Russian agent, a cis male scum, the patriarchy, corrupt, bought, blackmailed, stupid, a nazi, everything wrong with America, a Trump plant.....

We are going to have such fun after the Mueller findings, fam. I totally expect rioting protests and endless tears. Lots of literal shaking. Pretend PTSD. Kill whitey. I divorced my husband. I am now a lesbo. I hate men, all of it....... It will be a 7th inning stretch show between the 2016 and 2020 elections. I expect it in less than a month, but that's just my feeling.

EDIT: Just because I like the analogy.

We had a very satisfying breakfast in 2016. Completely stuffed. So good!
Brunch was delicious as well. Well cooked, WEll presented. Kavanaugh was a good chef.
Lunch was a bit hectic, but quite tasty. We had the government shutdown, the firing of useless journalists, Mueller chastising Buzzfeed, Covington, sperging from the new Congress. Too many dishes, but we left the table satisfied.
Mid afternoon snack presenter, Mueller, looks promising, and the menu is very promising as well. WE see no reason to expect anything but the best.
It will be a late supper, and although we know Trump will be approving the menu, we will be sampling small offerings from the democrats as they decide on their chef for the appetizers and just desserts for 2020.
Afterwards, we will all sit in our respective hottubs with our loved ones, drinking beer (because we love beer), and enjoy the long summer night, as we eventually fall off to sleep to the sounds of heavy machinery building a glorious wall, wondering what new breakfast we have in the morning, when we wake, well rested, for the 2024 election.

I told every single one of my Left-leaning friends a long time ago to not get too excited about the Mueller investigation, because it's not going to do what they expected it to do, and every single one of them ignored me. Hell, all but one of them flat-out just quit speaking to me since the 2016 election. For the time being I've been mature enough to not go rubbing their noses in it, but we're rapidly approaching the end of the Special Counsel and I'm not the least bit ashamed to say that after making me listen to this Russia-Russia-Russia bullshit for two years now, I am going to get roaring drunk and go on a shit-flinging tirade against every last one of them.

It looks like the checkmarks are backing off accusations of Russian collusion. Now they're bitching about the rich white Republican getting off easy.

The Alexandria, Virginia, jury found Manafort guilty of failing to report $16.5 million in income he earned in the Ukraine on behalf of the country’s former, Russian-backed president, Viktor Yanukovych.

My understanding is that Manafort was in the Ukraine lobbying on behalf of western business interests and, while there, developed a business relationship with Yanukovych, doing PR for the man on the sly. Either way, I bet he regrets the 6 weeks or so that he spent on the Trump Train since Don didn't really listen to him anyway.

It's not worth it, I totally get the sentiment but it's better to go all Ben Franklin-style and quietly bring it up when having other discussions than out=and-out rubbing their noses in it.

In fact, I'd encourage you to reconcile with the people who stopped talking to you about it and remain a quiet reality check/moderating influence where possible. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing people you generally consider intelligent go off the rails towards radicalization.

The whole white vs. black thing is just so.....lazy. It can be popped like a balloon with a bit of digging as posted above, like how both were charged for completely different reasons.

But these lazy minds just see the difference in prison sentences, and can comprehend those small numbers better. It’s basically the real life version of this:

It's funny when I see idiots talking about the sentence being announced in months instead of years. It's obvious they've never followed any sort of federal court cases because they are always announced in months.

Some of these people are going to kill themselves when Trump doesn't get indicted for anything. They are either going to become violent and get put down, kill themselves trying to cope through increased drug use, or outright kill themselves and leave a note blaming Trump, thinking they are making a difference. It's going to be hilarious.

I've tried that for two years now. I've been blocked and/or ignored on social media for it and ostracized offline by several friends. They're just gone, and it makes me sad.
