Mattis is probably concerned about the inevitable power vacuum that will arise with us gone, which is understandable, but peace activists warned neocons constantly in the early days of the War on Terror that getting involved there would all but guarantee we could never exit cleanly, so I have no sympathy for the military for being concerned about consequences now.

He's one of the few military leaders who says and does what he thinks will make for the best outcomes for the country regardless of the personal consequences. There are plenty of spineless suckups in the military who might at least provide better advice than Bolton so he's vacating his position for whoever that will be.

Trump only liked Mattis because he makes colorful sound bites and Obama fired him. He was disappointed to discover Mattis is a gay nerd who can't even dual wield deagles on the battlefield. Hopefully he's replaced by a marine trained teen parkour grand master.

Trump hasn't listened to Mattis for months and has started listening to Bolton instead
Mattis is a Marine so he's an expert at putting up with shit well past being tired of it and because he's dedicated his life to studying war I have faith that he's one of the most qualified people to decide when it's the right time to quit.
Bolton is a shameless chickenhawk who sent Mattis to Fallujah under false pretenses.
Mattis recognized that he was an ineffective secdef under Trump and given the value of his position he vacated it so that someone more effective could take his place.

Based on his responses to suggestions that he run for office I don't think he ever wanted to be secdef and was only there out of a sense of duty.

From a purely logical standpoint I don't see how

the fact that Mattis chose this particular hill to resign over

supports the argument that

I'd accept that his inability to work with Trump means that he was the wrong man for the job but the churn in Trump's cabinet seems to indicate that such men are rare to begin with.

Probably not so much put off by troops leaving Syria rather than what's going to happen next when Turkey uses the 5bn in munitions we sold them to genocide the Kurds, who never did us a bad turn.
