A day after Judge Glenn Devlin of Houston lost his reelection bid, he released nearly all of the juvenile defendants who appeared before him, as long as they answered no when he asked if they planned to kill anyone.

It is not known how many juveniles were released, but the number, according to the outlet, is at least seven — four of whom faced aggravated robbery charges.

“I’m not sure that I can wrap my [mind] around what he’s actually doing,” Alex Bunin, Harris County’s chief public defender said. There are many that question the judge’s decision, including District Attorney Kim Ogg, who said that releasing such defendants “could endanger the public.”

We oppose the wholesale release of violent offenders at any age.” According to the Houston Chronicle, all three juvenile judges in the county will be replaced by Democrats.

Electing judges is so strange. Glad I live in a State where we don't do that sort of nonsense. I can understand the sentiment for wanting to elect judges, but IMO it just does not serve the interests of justice if a Judge has to be answerable to the voters every 4 years. Its no accident States where judges are elected see a spike in death sentences during election years.

Pretty much every judicial election I've seen, people just vote for the incumbent because nobody gives a shit about who their judges are enough to research the candidates, so they just figure that whoever already has the position is fine. How bad of a judge do you have to be that you actually failed to get re-elected?

I have voted for exactly one incumbent judge in the 25 years I have been voting. The only people who have much hope of learning what a judge is like outside of being in their courtroom are lawyers. The only incumbent I footed for was the judge for a case I was on the jury for so I had some token knowledge of them. I vote against them or undervote if they're unopposed. Don't care if that makes my ballot a pain in the ass if there's a recount.

If I'm expected to make a good choice there needs to be some way to learn about them.
