I don't get this "we're the laughing stock of the world" these people harp about. If that were the case then how come countries didn't just laugh off our tariffs instead of renegotiating trade deals more in our favor? No serious country actually laughs at the US. Sure, they might nervously chuckle when we say "alright, it's time to change things up" but at the end of the day they still fall in line for the most part.

Texas Democrats used to understand that the only way to get elected was to be very, very moderate left. Like maybe be soft on illegal immigration but couch it as "the need for immigration reform", all that. But now you're seeing this string of pro-abortion, anti-gun, pro-sanctuary city, pro-socialized health care Democrats and they just don't seem to be able to clue in to the fact that outside of local urban centers that sort of agenda keeps having them go down in flames. It really is some variety of derangement that has caused them to abandon a strategy that's seen them keep a very modest but steady presence in state politics and go for full on "Orange man bad. Everything orange man like bad. Everything orange man hate good. Guns bad. Illegals good. Vote blue team."
I think more than anything the damage would be to their narrative. They've been insisting that people are tired of Trump and hate everything he's done, and the failure of a "blue wave" to manifest, let alone Republicans actually gaining anything anywhere, is pretty harsh. They won't acknowledge it, really, just like suddenly all those special elections stopped being a referendum on Trump after the Democrats lost them all, but it will take some more layers of paper off their tiger.

Oh that'd be hilarious. "Beto" may not have quite as many skeletons in his closet as Hillary, but they're closer to the front of the closet, easier to confirm the dental records of, and in a much more acceptable state to be dragged out and hung from the gates.
Plus there's the fact that he'd be fresh off of losing the senate race, so he'd have the specter of already being a loser and unable to beat Ted Cruz hanging over his head. Even an NPC might be capable of comprehending the logic of 'If Trump beat Cruz, and Cruz beat O'Rourke, how is O'Rourke going to beat the orange bad man?' "Beto" would be one of those "We're not even really bothering to try for a win, this is just fundraising" picks, since he'd actually be better at courting grassroots donations than Hillary and slightly less likely to embezzle the majority of it for himself.

Interesting theory but if anything Beto will just try again against John Cornyn, or whoever the GOP puts up if he retires, in 2020 at least in my opinion.
Likewise in Arizona Sinema might also give it another go in 2020 when John McCain's seat has its special election.
