I have a lot of project ponies, but at the moment I'd have to go with talking about how fucked forestry in the US is. Much has been done in the name of conservation to prevent management of the public owned forests. In the mid 90's Clinton used executive powers to ban logging in the national parks. Then in the last month of office he used executive powers again to ban logging and road building in huge swaths of the national forests. The Forest Service cannot build fire roads in these areas even if they had the budget to do so. The 9th circuit court has blocked attempts by both Bush and Trump to reverse these executive actions. Instead of the Forest Service being paid by loggers for rights to merchantable timber, they now have to pay loggers to masticate(mulch) trees to reduce fuel loads. This is assuming there is road access anywhere nearby. If there is no access, the foresters just wait for it to burn and it's not a problem until it grows back just as thick again in 20 years. Before I bore everyone to tears, here is a quote from a handbook for using logging equipment to fight fires:

I know I originally did that cutesy "presented without comment" thing, and others have kind of called you out on this, but to highlight something... We're at a point in the public discourse right now where one side feels perfectly fine with essentially dehumanizing *half of the country*, either by population or by location, whichever they need to at the time.

Look, I am a redneck, by your definition, I'm sure. I'm from rural America. I'm from a lower-middle-class background, and my parents grew up poor as shit. I drive a pickup truck and I hunt and I own guns and I like all of that stuff. Folks like me? We're used to being called rednecks. Some of us even take it as a point of pride. None of that means I'm a moron. None of that means my positions aren't considered, and my thoughts aren't my own. I went to college, just like almost everyone I would consider a friend or acquaintance in real life. I've got the internet, just like everyone else. I chose this. Lots of us chose this. I don't need guidance from my "betters". I don't need someone ten states over who wouldn't know the first thing about half the shit I do on a daily basis telling me what I need or how my life should run, either.
Yeah, we've got our trash. There are folks around here who have the IQ of turnips and consider getting drunk a competitive sport, preferably liberally mixed with drivin' and shootin'. They're probably not a shining example of democracy in action, I'll concede. But you know what? Neither is some welfare queen in the projects. Neither is a brain-burned twenty-something spending all their disposable income on the latest designer drugs and glitzy clothes to show off in the clubs. Neither are a lot of other people in those shining bastions of non-redneckery.
Sure, the stop signs around here tend to be full of bullet holes from drunk rednecks driving by and shooting them in the small hours. How much graffiti is in the cities, again?

I saw a documentary about the crips one time and the Compton area crips (where Snoop grew up) have pretty much said they would kill him on site. He's made a lot of money claiming to be a crip, and the way they see it, he owes them royalties. He went Hollywood the second he was pulled out of the ghetto.

The Veritas videos were both a let down and an exposure of potential crimes (pretty normal for Veritas). Hrabar seems the only one who could face consequences other than unemployment.

I forget where I heard this, but every 100 years or so America puts a very populist president in office. It happened with Andrew Jackson and happened with Theodore Roosevelt. Both men were considered to wild and crazy and unfit for office, but both also have lasting (and in Jackson's case, checkered) legacies. They say it takes 3 instances to make a trend, so I'm kind of eager to see if Trump will go the same way.

James Monroe won in 1816. 1916 saw Woodrow Wilson get his second term. But Harding and especially Coolidge, who followed, were definitely tax-cutting, smaller-government types.
Whether the pattern holds true depends on what you mean by "populist".

Want to say his blowhard ways made a trade deal fall through? Okay, legit complaint. Assert his attempts to short circuit Congress just made passing legislation harder instead of easier? Fine, logical point of contention.
But nooooo, all we get is "TRUMP IS HITLER!" "TWO SCOOPS!" "IMPEACH CAUSE HE HURTS OUR FEELINGS!".
He's no angel and he's made some legitimate fuckups as President, and I'd love to see his legitimate instances of dropping the ball be taken to task, but the loons this thread is dedicated to would rather indulge in fever dreams then pointing to actual mistakes the man has made.

If they were smart and patient, they could ensure he'd be gone in 4 years, but because they want him gone NOW and have absolutely no impulse control, they are only ensuring he'll be there for 8 years because their fevered screaming does nothing but sew internal dysfunction...
There's a reason the gay rights movement succeeded and Occupy Wall Street or Black Lives Matter doesn't. One is willing to keep up constant legal pressure for decades, and if they don't get it this time, they'll be here next session of Congress util they do. The other wants their demands met by Monday because they already bought the Tuesday Victory Parade T-shirts.... and if they don't get it, they'll start breaking windows.....
