He admires her from a distance but is unable to make any contact with her because he is socially underdeveloped. One day, he wins a large prize in the football pools. He quits his job and buys an isolated house in the countryside. He feels lonely, however, and wants to be with Miranda. Unable to make any normal contact, Clegg decides to add her to his "collection" of pretty, petrified objects, in the hope that if he keeps her captive long enough, she will grow to love him.

After careful preparations, he kidnaps Miranda by drugging her with chloroform and locks her up in the cellar of his house. He is convinced that Miranda will start to love him after some time. However, when she wakes up, she confronts him with his actions. Clegg is embarrassed and promises to let her go after a month. He promises to show her "every respect", pledging not to sexually molest her and to shower her with gifts and the comforts of home, on one condition: she can't leave the cellar.

The second part of the novel is narrated by Miranda in the form of fragments from a diary that she keeps during her captivity. Miranda reminisces over her previous life throughout this section of the novel; and many of her diary entries are written either to her sister or to a man named G.P., whom she respected and admired as an artist. Miranda reveals that G.P. ultimately fell in love with her and consequently severed all contact with her.

At first, Miranda thinks that Clegg has sexual motives for abducting her; but, as his true character begins to be revealed, she realises that this is not true. She begins to pity her captor, comparing him to Caliban in Shakespeare's play The Tempest because of his hopeless obsession with her. Clegg tells Miranda that his first name is Ferdinand (eventual winner of Miranda's affections in The Tempest).

Miranda tries to escape several times, but Clegg stops her. She also tries to seduce him to convince him to let her go. The only result is that he becomes confused and angry. When Clegg keeps refusing to let her go, she starts to fantasize about killing him. After a failed attempt to do so, Miranda passes through a phase of self-loathing. She decides that to kill Clegg would lower her to his level. She refrains from any further attempts to do so. Before she can try to escape again, she becomes seriously ill and dies.

The third part of the novel is narrated by Clegg. At first, he wants to commit suicide after he finds Miranda dead; but, after he reads in her diary that she never loved him, he decides that he is not responsible for what happened to her and is better off without her. He buries her corpse in the garden. The book ends with his announcement that he plans to kidnap another girl.

This actually reminds me of a segment of Dino Buzzati's tale"When the cuckoo tweeted" of the novel "I sessanta racconti" ("The sixty tales" - I'm not sure if it's traslated this way - just read the novel in Italian), incentrated on a group of friends that mets up at a pub.
Young Giovanni Maria (the story's local incel and "son every mother prays the Lord to have") is infatuated with a girl, Elena, but is too shy to make a move and so goes on with "Women are cruel" diatribes with friends. Said friends suggest he should be more forceful, but a couple of them tells him to just leave her be.
Long story short, he manages to stalk and drive Elena so exasperated she slashes his throat with a potato peeler, then kills herself a couple of days later.
The friends who encouraged him this way actually laugh at how things went, the others are disgusted by what happened.

Writing this, Buzzati actually wanted to criticize the mindset in some Italian regions were a girl who was not interested in someone was just"playing hard to get".

I think the image I linked simply highlights how incels are so ignorant and entitled when it comes to sex. They have now arrived to the point where having sex with a woman would be a defeat because they pleased the "evil creature".
They are not searching for love or intimacy anymore, just for brutality and dominance. That's the kind of reasoning serial killers have.
When they start to proclaim that rape is the only way, well... I think it's time to get the authorities involved.

Incels post threads like this, where they are quite clearly to my mind highly depressed. I know this because I have suffered from depression in the past and it is horrid and it is not dissimilar to this.

Speaking of literature there was a book I read ages ago called "how dangerous men think" written by a cop. There was one bit I remember in it where guys attack girl's because they think they are "owed" sex for something they did
I.e. a guy drops a girl off from night out back home. He stops her from getting out car and expects sex or something but she doesn't want to, and while it was nice of him to drop her off if she had to give him sex for it she would have instead found her own way home. But the guy has none of that, he did something for her, he keeps on thinking she "owes him" and the worst happens

Like if you want to do something nice for someone do it just to be nice in general or try to get the ball rolling with a message that you like them. You might get something back with a similar gift/ favour returned but don't expect it too hard and never think anything you do means you are owed sex. Nobody is owed sex.

simple guideline to life, you treat others as you want to be treated. If they wanted to be rescued from danger at somepoint, they should treat other people likewise. Besides, if you don't help, you have consequences, like cops, court, upset family of victim, your own conscience eating you up

I can understand them feeling lonely or depressed in some of their sadder posts (though that isn't an excuse either for their shit), but I honestly can't fathom this.

I don't even think it's a right to sex, just power like someone said earlier. Somewhere in their brains wires got crossed and their need for power got a bit haywire. And I can understand wanting some power in your life, but not to this extreme, and I can't imagine not having a conscience telling you "no, this is wrong" when incels come up with what they say.
