Can I be honest? To me, this whole thing really just looks like a whole lot of middle to upper middle class kids (Or mid-to-late-twenty/thirty somethings who should be acting their age. "Children at heart" who "Never let their inner child die" if you would) flinging shit at each other?

Edit - And I hope that doesn't seem like I am trying to be edgy or some shit. I mean, I'm an upper-middle class twenty-something.

But, it's the way both sides are handling it that make me think this way. Yeah, they both have their better sides and legitimate points, but I think these are rooted in greater issues within Gaming Culture, and I think ultimately if there is going to be any progress, both of these sub-factions are going to need to realize they are on the same team and join together to push for better games. Because in the end, I think the better, smarter people who actually care about games and don't just view it as the D-Day of the Culture War, are the more powerful elements of both factions.

However the journalists/bloggers/commenters shouting that all of #GamerGate is fat smelly neckbeards and that all of #NotYourShield are sock puppets are fucking idiots contributing nothing to the discussion.

The SJWs treating this like it's the war they've been preparing for all their lives, the proverbial Ragnarok of the Internet, and the #GamerGate people who are treating it in the same way, are pulling what to me resembles High School Drama bullshit, as adults.

I dunno, man, I just can't wait for all this shit to pass.

People at the extreme happen to be the loudest. There are plenty of rational voices in the middle. Boogie9288 and TotalBiscuit, for example. I think a big part of why this blew up so much isn't about SJW stuff, or feminism, or any of that. It's because of what this means for the indie game scene. It's supposed to be a level playing field where basically anyone can make a game that succeeds or fails on its own merits. The media corruption kicks that idea right in the balls. It turns it into a cool kids club where developers in the right clique get showered with media coverage, while better games are ignored. The SJW/feminism stuff only comes into play because it's the perfect material for clickbait. Youtube is a better platform for reviews because you can actually see the gameplay in real time, so that sort of shitty article is all traditional gaming media has left. They're desperately trying to stay relevant, and, well, this is the result.

It seems to me that the gaming journalists want the prestige of being journalists, but don't want the responsibility that comes with the that tag. Condescension from the industry and journalists, because calling your audience a bunch of neckbeard, virgin basement dwellers is always good for PR. Way to build good will </sarcasm>

It looks like the Escapist are making a good start to undo some of the damage

However, as much as I may side with #GamerGate, it seems like both sides have forgotten that they are human. I agree with Jim on that point. To be fair, the gaming community is a divided one, with people already at each other's throats:
Casual v. Hardcore/Elitists, Sony v. Microsoft, PC v. Console.
and gaming as a hobby is competitive, when people lose their cool they trash talk each other and will use whatever ammunition they have to throw at their opponents. I don't the trash talking gamers do is anything personal, it is a part of the heat of the competition. However, there is a time and place for everything. In pvp, that is the time for trash talking, now, in real life, is the time for taking the high road.

On another note, does it strike anyone else that Jim seemed like he was playing it very safe this week?

Everything the SJW touches turns to shit. Those that are conciliatory toward that menace are just as odious as they are.

Boycotts are effective as this garbage is advertisement-supported. It is not enough not to purchase; one must also write the companies that one is withholding one's custom.

Targets:
-Yahoo (owns Tumblr, is based in California)
-Gawker (owns various SJW rags, is based in New York)
-Games journalism that refuses to sack participants in the Quinnspiracy, their parent companies, and their subsidiaries.

Let our wrath not be placated until the owners of the above-mentioned companies prostrate themselves before us wearing hair-shirts as signs of their most sincere contrition.

It is known that females control >80% of US consumer spending, therefore I use a female alias and write in a softer, mushier tone when writing to companies.

The so-called SJWs and their counterparts on the MRA cycle are so loud during this because they see a crisis they can exploit. They don't care about the issues, they don't care about advancement of their causes, and they don't care about #Gamergate in general. What they care about is that they can have the ability to demonize their opponents and bolster their own egos, in what can only be described as battle lines being drawn before a bunch of retards charge forward and play happy-slaps.

Meanwhile, those with a vested interest in silencing legitimate discussion win through this tactic. Can't have an actual discussion whilst there's people doxxing each other and throwing barely-coherent outbursts of vitriol and rage around, mixed with doses of racism, misanthropy, and (yes, actual) misogyny, since this is specifically intended to provoke and shut down discussion.

Don't be like the retards slap-fighting in the middle. Ignore them and focus on the actual issues. That's how you win. That's how progress is made.

Oh, goody, my favourite wizard is back. Still just as nonsensical as ever, I see.

So apparently now Zoe's fanbrats have started outright demanding that people prove they're not those eeeeevil cishetwhitemen with pictures and stuff:
https://twitter.com/smktty/status/509098151568220160

I've yet to see proof but I've also heard she misgendered, outed and doxxed a trans woman minor too. Wouldn't be surprising at all if it's true and even less surprising if sjws continue to defend her yet still want jontron's head on a pike because he said "retarded".

EDIT: Here we go

I think the details of this situation is appealing to many of us because many are portraying this situation as the "corrupt, selfish elite being overthrown by the oppressed underdog" narrative. A lot of people involved certainly seem to be displaying a sense of narcissism, with which their position in the industry probably plays a large factor in. However, I don't think these personality traits are exclusive to those from wealthy backgrounds (and that's coming from someone who's naturally bias against rich people stemming from insecurities growing up poor). Also given that video games aren't exactly a conservative medium, I think it would be inaccurate to give the impression that the industry is in control by an inherently wealthy elite. I think it's more that the people involved are the type who are so competitive and determined to get to the top of the career ladder, they will shit on literally anybody that gets in their way. Manipulation, intimidation, corruption and betrayal are just means to an end; one that is so desirable anything to achieve it is justified. These types of people come from all different backgrounds and have different factors which influence their behaviour. Yes, some come from wealthy backgrounds and are just natural assholes. Some however may have come from extreme poverty and learned to be counter-dependant in order to survive. Media and creative industries are filled with these types of people and in some ways, it's the only way to earn a living in the industry (it's a major factor why I decided to leave the music industry. Well, that and not being a very good musician).

The other factor I think as well is how important social media has become in terms of social status. Realistically, Twitter at this point could be renamed Depression Quest and sold as an MMORPG. XP is gained by having more re-tweets and levels are determined by the number of followers you have. You can level up quicker if you join a class such as SJW or MRA and go on quests such as harassment campaigns or getting re-tweeted by sucking up to someone more popular. However when the person you are role-playing is an exaggerated caricature of yourself, a few people are going to confuse the internet with reality and start role-playing in real life, especially if your job is to role-play on the internet (not a derogatory dig at gaming journalists at all :tomgirl:) or are so depressed you shut yourself off from reality and use the internet as your only means of human interaction (which I've ashamedly done in the past). For the types of people that I described in the first paragraph, Twitter is a godsend; you can still act like a shitty, manipulative human being and be rewarded by a growing number of people who blindly agree with you. If you deliberately generate controversy, you can also delude yourself into thinking the growing number of people that disagree with you are a justification for treating others badly.

The sad thing is the majority of people who just enjoy video games being manipulated into an us vs. them situation and facing really abhorrent levels of abuse and harassment (just to be clear, I think nobody deserved to be harassed in this situation. It's just equally sad when people encourage this behaviour to play victim and justify corrupt behaviour). Nobody deserves to be treated like a game and this is what gets people rightfully angry, but it's difficult to express that without it being twisted by someone to fit an agenda and become part of the feedback system.

I need to stop writing these long spergy essays.

Tech Crunch posted an article yesterday on Gamergate. It's moderately in-depth in it's scope, discussing the "death of gamers" articles and the controversy around gaming journalists. However, the language used is incredibly charged - Take, for example, the opening paragraph of their first section:

#gamergate began a few weeks ago when an ex-boyfriend of Zoe Quinn posted anenormous, pompous and self-important diatribe online accusing her of sleeping her way around the games industry. He posted screengrabs of chats they had, presented his side of the story as the noble and maligned man being led astray by this faerie creature who turned out to be full of lies and so on.

Yes, this kicked off the fiasco. But dismissing everything Eron isn't productive - he was right that she is sleeping her way around the industry, and that it has garnered her more attention than if she didn't. The rest of the article follows in the same vein, report on why people are mad while using charged language to snipe at the haters.

The writer goes on to talk about trying to start his own anti-gamergate campaign:

In the middle of last week I considered creating a social media campaign to combat the spread of #gamergate called the “Cherry Pledge”. My thinking was to circulate this:

1. Read this text.
“I pledge my support for all game makers, journalists and participants in the games industry who believe in its positive and progressive future. I support all efforts to develop that medium in all directions. I support all the people involved and act from the point of view of assuming that they are all honest, open and sincere. I reject all intimations of otherwise, all abuse, all harassment, all deception and all slanderous campaigns that seek to drive voices out of the industry, its media or its player culture. I pledge my support for this campaign with this cherry.”

2. If you agree, sign this petition [Sidebar: this would be a change.org petition].

3. Copy and paste the above text onto a page on your blog, site, corporate website, social media profile, wherever. Anywhere visible.

4. Change your social media avatar to a picture of a cherry or cherries. This step is vital because as you then post the image will spread again and again, reinforcing the message.

5. Tweet, Facebook, Instagram (etc) your support using the #cherrypledge tag.

Unsure of whether this was a good idea or would it merely fan the flames, I posted it on Facebook. As I happen to know a fair few people in the games industry I figured I would get either a voluble yes or no from various voices I got only a few isolated responses. For the most part my industry friends stayed silent. Indeed the general silence of the games industry on #gamergate troubles me deeply. It’s a vacuum begging to be filled.

Remember, in this article, #gamergate isn't about journalistic corruption and disdain for the consumer base. It's about "harassment and misogyny", because those being called out have learned that saying those magic words makes it hard to disagree with them. It also allows the rapid, extremist sides of both base to do war with one another and draw attention away from legitimate complaints.

But my favorite bit is his closer:

There are some highly significant lessons coming out of #gamergate, things that we should all be paying attention to as we attempt to move forward:

  1. We need to acknowledge that there is a disconnect between the gaming media and at least a subset of its readers, but that disconnect isn’t about agenda-pushing so much as relate-ability. If anything it’s one of education, of providing the bridge to bring the rest of the readers along for the ride.
  2. There is a large lack of understanding among gaming fans regarding scale. Many readers seem to think that because Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian or Anna Anthropy attract some coverage in the specialist press that this constitutes them becoming “powers” with the ability to change the face of the industry. This isn’t even remotely true.
  3. There is similarly a massive disconnect operating among a certain wing regarding the role of the gaming media in general. It is, after all, a specialist free press that markets games to potential customers. It’s an entertainment press whose history is in many ways far more shady than it is today. The games press is able to talk much more openly than it ever could because it’s all about digital (infinite pages) and community (valued readership). Lots of gamers don’t seem to see it that way though. They think they’re being served corporate swill. They think even posts like this are in some way trying to fool them. That particular delusion has to be unpicked.
  4. But the biggest lesson for me has been this: This whole debate is divided by chosen media. The anti-#gamergate sector has largely been communicating in the written form, thinking that articles that gain a few hundreds tweets and a couple of thousand views constitute success. By contrast the pro-#gamergate sector is largely communicating through social media and YouTube, and some of its content is garnering over a million views. The anti- posts are generally debate-heavy and intellectual. The pro? Tabloid, emotional, paranoid and personal. That’s why its message is reaching so much further. If ever anything made the case that video blogging has become more important than text, #gamergate is showing us why in spades.

Those are wonderful takeaways! Everyone should be thinking of the poor journalist, of the poor game dev. Gamers, or consumers, or account numbers with dollars attached, they should start suckling at the teat of "mainstream gaming news" and stop fucking questioning things. And the only reason #gamersgate is constantly being talked about and shared is because they use youtube in yellow-journalist tabloid bullshit, not the "debate-heavy and intellectual [written word]" of real men of character.

Tech Crunch!

Tech Crunch!

....What men of character would that be?

Probably the ones not at Tech Crunch, Because I recall Tech Crunch getting a 14/100 from Reuters.

I've reduced checking on this to every three days or so, but while it seems to have remained out of the larger public limelight, it still remains prominent within social media.

To me, the worst part of this incident no longer extends from Zoe sleeping her way up or how SJWs have tried making this an argument of gender rather than argument of credibility - it's how deliberately manipulative websites like Kotaku, Reddit, Escapist, TechCrunch and Friends have been to prevent this information from catching the public eye. By intentionally deleting and censoring feedback to prevent its disclosure and posting anti-gamer vitriol that doesn't examine the incident from a neutral perspective, they've essentially confirmed that gaming journalism is not a proper medium of responsibility.

You can look at it from the view that many Internet users are inflammatory and immature, but if these paid workers are to be considered journalists or developers, they should never be caught spouting some of the nonsense that's been circulating. These positions are naturally stressful, but the general rule of thumb should still be that you don't disrespect your followers/customers, like all jobs that involve interacting with the public. For example, Peter Molyneux, Sakurai, Hideo Kojima and others have all received a level of criticism for their work, but none of them behaved like Phil Fish. Likewise, journalism requires proper investigation into the subject matter beyond Google searching and Twitter surfing, without censoring information for fear of reprisal.

Agreed. It is my hope that in the end, it's the rational voices in the middle that end up defining whatever changes occur.

In this particular incident, I think progress will only come through compromise. However, the SJWs stand to lose the most out of any compromise, and so they won't approach the table.
