Science Russia blocks 1.8 Million Amazon and Google IPs in Attempt to Block Telegram - Telegram still not properly blocked.

Roskomnadzor, Russia's telecommunications watchdog, banned today over 1.8 million IP addresses belonging to Amazon and Google's cloud infrastructure.

The following IP blocks have been reported as banned in Russia at the ISP level. The IP ranges account for 1,835,008 IPs.

52.58.0.0/15
18.196.0.0/15
18.194.0.0/15
18.184.0.0/15
35.156.0.0/14
35.192.0.0/12
The move to ban these IP blocks is a response to Telegram moving some of its infrastructure to Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud servers over the weekend.

Roskomnadzor banned the Telegram instant messaging client inside Russia's border on Friday, April 13, after Telegram refused to hand over customers' encryption keys to the FSB, Russia's main intelligence service.

By moving servers to Amazon and Google servers, Telegram was able to skirt the initial ban and provide service to Russian users over the weekend.

Many users ridiculed Roskomnadzor's decision on social media, and for good reasons, as the move to mass-ban so many IP addresses had secondary repercussions, as it also blocked many legitimate web services. Users reported many online games, mobile apps, and cryptocurrency services going dark over the course of the day.

Roskomnadzor is basically a lolcow as an organisation. They keep blocking shit over dumb reasons, like "Think of the children!" or "This could be used by extremists!". Here are some examples of sites they've blocked:
  • Wikipedia for having a "Canabis smoking" and a "Charas" article
  • Various anti-"Crimea annexation" sites
  • Github for having a suicide manual
  • Russian torrent trackers for obvious reasons
  • LinkedIn for collecting personal data
  • Pornhub and other porn sites because "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"
So yeah, they're an retarded organization and one of the many awful examples of Russian censorship. Get fucked, Roskomnadzor ;) I wouldn't be surprised if they blocked Kiwi Farms because of this post.

Última edición:
That sucks, Telegram is great. The dude who set up Russia's facebook VK runs it.
It always gets me a bunch of paranoid security nerds are giving up their phone number to register, I don't get it. Riot (Matrix protocol) is where it's at.

No one other than furries uses Telegram and the only reason they use it is so they can blow hundreds of dollars on emotes of their fursona’s dick. Mother Russia made a brave and necessary sacrifice to limit the growth of the furry scourge.

No no no! I have to use Telegram so Putin and Trump can't see me telling my friends how much I like anime! My privacy is important!

On the plus side, look at all the conspiratard content that gets m i l k e d from decisions like this.

Another thing people will miss the forest for the trees over, censorship is for the dogs.

Stuff that Roskomnadzor has broken:
  • Viber messenger
  • Odnoklassniki social network
  • PlayerUnknownʼs Battlegrounds, Fortnite, World of Warships Blitz, Guild Wars 2, Splatoon 2
  • Chat function in EVE Online
  • Nintendo Switch's online shop, Playstation Network
  • Dozens of small online shops and delivery services
  • Twitch
  • DuckDuckGo
  • The website of Russia Today's Ruptly video agency (:story:)
  • Online systems in several Russian supermarkets (allegedly)
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Lots of other stuff
:stress:

A bunch of die-hard Putinists are cheering on the Telegram block anyway. I bet they look and sound like this.

If you ever work with Chinese developers, they all want to use WeChat, which is garbage. It's got like 900 million users because they've got a captive audience.

Russians are sketchy, but at least Telegram doesn't suck dick and it's usable (despite their best efforts apparently, lol).

Fucking tell me about it, I hate dealing with companies or exporters based in China that's why I source as little as I can from there but part of it is if you REALLY need to be in contact with them to manage production or delivery you have to use there IT systems that are shit and normally cause your IT security products to have a fucking heart attack.

The good news is China isn't as competitive as it once was, not just because of the IP issues but because of the rising costs of production and increasing quality and production problems. I'll give you a good example, I buy a product that was designed in Germany who moved production from Germany to China in an effort to save costs,, beforehand there was great quality and my return rate was about 1 in 100 when production moved it was 48/100 so much so I stopped carrying them QC's my reaming stock and then returned anything I wouldn't use myself.

Since then they have moved production back to the EU, Poland and Czechoslovakia to be specific and the quality has returned and the costs have remained the same, the problem is they lost what was starting to become an almost cult-like following for this product family and burned any goodwill they had by saying nothing bad had happened, they have also had to fork over there IP (often forgotten part of dealing with China) and there are now lots of clone products popping up if not outright fakes.

Telegram sticker packs are free and anyone can make them.

Ubisoft's servers have been intermittently shitting themselves the past few days when I've been playing games via uPlay, probably another related issue with this Telegram blocking bullshit.
