YouTube said it would ban videos relating to the sale or assembly of guns and certain gun accessories, as tech giants face growing pressure to limit the promotion of firearms.

The world’s largest video site, a division of Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL, -0.16% GOOG, -0.62% Google, said this week it would prohibit all videos that link directly to sites that sell guns or accessories known as bump stocks, which allow certain firearms to fire as rapidly as machine guns. Bloomberg News and the website Tubefilter reported the policy shift, which YouTube posted on its website on Monday.

Videos showing how to build a gun or install bump-stock devices will also be restricted under the new rules, which the company said it would begin enforcing in April.

The move thrusts YouTube into a national debate inflamed by last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla. Protests against gun violence have pressured U.S. businesses to distance themselves from the gun industry and the National Rifle Association, the biggest gun lobby group. At the same time, gun-rights activists have vowed to protest businesses that take such action. The NRA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A specific channel, Military Arms Channel, had several flags on its videos after the Anti-Defamation League (The US branch of the JIDF) took over Youtube moderation a few weeks ago. He didn't break any of Youtube's terms of service. Showing videos of guns weren't even on the terms of service. He had to completely disable his channel because it had gotten 2 strikes on videos that he had uploaded years ago, and the ADL suddenly decided they were bad enough to ban them. A third strike would have deleted his channel permanently.

The Military Arms Channel makes tons of political videos urging his viewerbase to contact Congress and the President when they start advocating for more gun control. He had his own partner with Youtube: they apparently couldn't do shit while the ADL tried destroying his thousands of videos.

On the other side. Hickok45, a much more popular youtube gun channel who rarely makes political posts didn't have his videos maliciously flagged by the ADL.

I don't know, do YOU think this is being used exclusively on specific "problems" as seen by the ADL?

They're trying to turn it into a TV network so they can maximize ad revenue. And most large advertisers like the most milquetoast shit possible, usually with lots of Burger King Kids' Club diversity and maybe a few PG13 political jokes from time to time. They've got a LOT of people to chase away before they reach that goal--not to mention the ungodly amounts of Joker-pissing-on-Elsa cartoons that some vast Chinese/Korean/Ect. computer network is constantly dumping onto their site.

That's the thing. Glove and Boots wasn't political at all. It was a PG puppet show that had a fairly strong subscriber base. They saw things were changing and decided to double down on their videos to pick up the slack. They pushed out tons of content. Then, youtube changed the algorithm. It screwed up everything. I'll let the puppets explain it.

Youtube is intentionally burning down their creator base and pinching pennies by not paying out to the small timers. Niche stuff they can't market or that competes with established brands they want gone so they tweaked the algorithm to put them at a disadvantage. They want only the popular channels to survive. Gun and politics and controversy or whatever are just convenient excuses to restrict and shitcan the small channels. But the problem is much larger than that.

C&R Arsenal is a totally legit historical/educational YouTube channel focusing on WW1 small arms. Him and Forgotten Weapons are the two most likely people in the entirety of the gun YouTube community that you could legitimately call "historians", their videos of real educational value for future generations. Ian doesn't even fire the guns in most of his videos. It's getting scarily close to book burning.

fun fact: For awhile YouTube would display educational videos targeted towards toddlers along side Forgotten Weapon's videos, which was absolutely bizarre.
