Obsession with identity politics* + pollution and poisons everywhere + stressful lifestyles + internet and smartphone addiction?

Also lack of adequate mental care like others said.

*(it's hard to enjoy life when "problematic" is everywhere)

I'm going to say it's a combination of a few things. The one thing I would know best about would be radiation.

Back when X-rays were discovered and before it was known to cause genetic mutation, it used to be used in a variety of ways that would NEVER be allowed today. Here are just a few examples:

https://www.orau.org/ptp/collection/shoefittingfluor/shoe.htm

http://www.entwellbeing.com.au/strange-history-x-ray-treatment-for-acne/

https://www.cancercompass.com/message-board/message/all,48881,0.htm

It could very well be that the people effected by this had some major genetic changes as a result, but experience the negative effects themselves. These mutations could have effected their reproductive processes and result in offspring that were genetically damaged.

There's also always the drug explosion from the 1960s to consider, as well as all the medications we take getting back into the water supply. I don't have anything to back that up, but it's just a hunch of mine.

There's a lot of good stuff so far in this thread, but one thing I did want to add we know more about mental illness, and we can label people as such. The absent minded professor "type" or mind set, (often thought to be started off the father of modern/classic economics Adam Smith mind you) were just that guy when now we know of aspies autism etc.

So a lot of Dave the fucking weirdo who is/was a perfectly functional mostly happy person we have a label for them. Sometimes they will see an illness and treatment will reduce the quality of life to someone.

Also a lot more mental cases in the past, we've learned were more medical, like late stage syphilis or ergot poisoning. I mean end of the day, you are going nuts, but that's a different kind of crazy as burning your mind out on chems or born with a disorder.

It really boils my blood when people try to slap labels on historical figures, it's the goldwater rule broken to an extreme. Personally I find it an attempt to glorify mental illness and call "dibs" in disorder cultures/circles.

One thing I want to restress, it's a lot of different things we are merely splitting hairs what's the most influence, and that's a perfectly good debate to have as we will both learn more on how other people view the issue and how bad the situation is/can be.

I'd be willing to bet there's at least one environmental factor that we just haven't been able to pinpoint yet contributing to the "internet depression fishbowl" social issues. It took until the 1970's to realize how much lead in the environment was affecting the general public and we're just now beginning to understand how serious the microplastic problem is. It's not outside the realm of possibility that a common manufacturing byproduct we haven't controlled well enough could be increasing the odds that you get to a certain age and just completely lose your shit.

medication is so fucking expensive that some people can't afford it. people who have severe mental illness should be given free meds honestly. anything to get people to start taking their prescriptions...

I think it has to do with stagnating wages, economic issues and the internet providing a very broad perspective where you can easily get overwhelmed with bad news and never really log off, the world becoming smaller in a sense and the expectation to constantly be available combined with feeing like the world is constantly going to shit can at least cause depression, people are also less social and less outdoors, and many people dont feel meaning in their work because its divided in a sense that a lot of the time you dont really see reap the fruits of your labor with the feeling that you have actually contributed to society in a way that the reptile/monkey brain sends reward signals for
i feel like this is the most accurate answer here. less and less people are going to blue collar jobs like plumbing and are being funneled into "good" jobs that are massively overcrowded. you can get a job after getting your degree in any field, but they often pick a certain part of the field that's already full of tons of people.

if everyone is told to be a teacher, then everyone is going to try to be one. no one wants to be an electrician, even though they get paid more than most jobs out there.

The biggest is the economy. The biggest driver of mental illness is basically the stress and depression that comes from being insecure and working a fucking pointless ass job that means absolutely nothing every day while being paid complete shit.

Local social life and community has also evaporated basically as well. Being an olderfag than I suspect most here, I clearly remember life before computers, consoles, the internet, mobile phones and there was definitely a more community feeling to life. I knew basically everyone on the streets I lived, kids played outside all over the streets and parks and playgrounds etc.

I walk past playgrounds now and there are never children on them, when I take my dog for a walk I never see any kids, or really other people aside from the occasional cyclist. I do not know any of my neighbours names.

Another one I think is maybe a bit more esoteric is that there is no longer a sense of national or social progress really. Something I get from talking to people from China, Vietnam, Korea etc is the pride and view that society is really moving forward to something they can be proud of, people born in the 80s in Vietnam, South Korea, China wouldn't even have had full food security, they would have mostly been rural, living borderline substance lives and now they live in big shining cities with High Speed Rail, food everywhere and cheap, the fastest internet in the world.

The west on the other hand has just completely stagnated. There are no big national projects anymore and in fact things of national and social pride are being eroded and dismantled like National Parks, our Politicians just clearly don't give a fuck about anything beyond their post-political "consulting" careers at some investment bank or energy firm, there is absolutely zero foresight in Western governmental planning beyond a single political term if not even a single year. Living in Australia, the break Labor took from Neoliberalism to try push big national infrastructure projects, like NBN and HSR just ended up being completely sabotaged and dismantled by Neoliberal sociopaths who couldn't stand to think of the Government doing anything beyond sucking the dick of private corporations.

Society in the west just isn't moving forward, at all, not only does it feel like everything has stagnated, when Politicans are dismantling national parks and marine reserves and other wonders that the average man can take pride in and visit and wonder at, it feels like society is actively getting WORSE.

Look at the US, the great wondrous monuments that swell up a sense of immense pride and feeling of being actually a part of something bigger.. were all built in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hoover Dam is fucking amazing and beautiful, 1935, the US National Parks program, 1916, Statue of Liberty, 1924, Mount Rushmore, 1941, US space program, 1960s etc etc. What in fuck from recent memory can you take some form of social collective pride in? The new McDonalds self serve screens?

1936:
"There is nothing so American as our national parks. The scenery and the wildlife are native. The fundamental idea behind the parks is native. It is, in brief, that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us. The parks stand as the outward symbol of the great human principle" - FDR

Eh, I don't mean to political sperg but many people have chance to get meds and don't take due to side effects. Many of them, end up in spaces where their cost to the gov is higher. I'm not trying to be callous but, I think you are over simplifying meds they are far far from perfect, even when given correctly and safely. Frankly, many myself included feel are not, for a few reasons.

Now I want to say, yes some people are ready willing and able to take meds but can't and that sucks.

Now with the reform, you get into two very scary areas, you accept all docs are 100% honest, and ignore that 3 week paid for Merck cruise.... (yes this is reformed but still work arounds and work with me here) or that everyone is willing to take the down sides. If not, but we could assume it was a true help, then we need to violate civil rights and drug people, that opens a ton of legal doors.

That's why myself and most people on this site have 0 care and openly mock people who fake mental problems. It's not a perfect system no nation America included has a perfect fix, and people refuse/don't understand/scam/ignore/are victim of the systems. Mental problems suck. It's not a game for those people.

oh, I gotta mention this. if you don't feel normal or have problems doing stuff, do a genetic blood test. they can find gene deformations in you that can explain a lot about you. it may even give you the perfect prescription that helps you feel normal

oh i completely understand. i was also making an incredibly general statement to keep from power leveling. I started my journey in the world of mental health when i went to rehab at 14. I know more about the subject then i wish i did.

I think it's just because people don't see the point anymore.

  • Everyone's depressed because no job really offers satisfaction anymore, it's all about ticking boxes, there's no drive to excel as higher ups don't appreciate it or even give a shit, Hell any fucker could do most jobs really.
  • You're actually scared to say anything slightly controversial lest you become a victim of mob justice so you're funnelled into one monotonous viewpoint.
  • Democracy is a joke, you're voting for the same beige politicians that are only out for themselves, it's a contributing factor to the rise of the populists too, as people will get them in just for a little bit of entertainment.
  • Speaking of, mainstream entertainment is all sludge. No heart really put into it just another shit rapper, folk singer or superhero movie to squirt out for your consumption, the masses tend to mock anything other than that which can really affect people.
  • Even the kids have it rough, they're not taught how to live in society, they're only taught to parrot facts and figures to make the school look better so they can get more funding, no wonder they're feeling lost now.

Nihilism is an attractive ideal in these times.

I would agree on many of the points brought up, specifically.

1. The post 2007 mobile internet. No one sits and thinks anymore, not even on the toilet, people are always absorbing and responding, no introspection. Parenting also suffers, as even sitting with your child to talk during an ad break begins to disappear. People meet up to socialize, but are all sitting looking at their phones. People respond in discussions as if they are reading off and article vertabim. Schools seem less and less like a place for children to learn and more like a place for people to dump their kids while they go use Tinder the rest of the day.

2. The Western Economy. Outsourcing, erosion of the "Nuclear Family", increasing gap between rich and poor, increasing inflation, no desire for anyone in power to change things. Pure capitalism, pure corporatism. Politicians are now virtually a corporate representative.

3. Pharmacutical companies chasing profit. Kid plays with the wrong toys? Transgender! We have a new drug line and Transgender clinic for you! Kid is a bit down due to retarded school policies and terrible social climate? Anti-depressants will turn that frown upside down! Have you just been letting your kids drink Energy drinks every day and they are too hyper? ADHD! We have all the answers for the lazy parent!

4. Erosion of a moral and ethical framework with which to life by. What used to be religion for most people is either not there, or being replaced with "Social Justice" or "LGBT Community" or "Radical Feminist"

I wonder if it's the Wests version of the Fall of Rome. I wonder how much worse things can get.

I think it's just being screened and diagnosed more because more people are accessing mental healthcare than in the past. The destruction of the earth also damages humans in many ways. People have strayed from the Gods, from their ancestors, from the spirits all around them. They have no honor and respect for something bigger than their individual selves. I believe the earth will recover because She is immortal and in company of the Gods. I cannot say the same for humankind.

The consequences of capitalist greed and climate change will lead to new and morbid forms of human suffering like in how WW1 a bunch of new surgical techniques had to be developed because of all the injuries on the battlefield that were rare before. Radiation sickness, chemical and industrial accidents, birth defects... Those who worship technological progress overlook all the new ways of human, animal and ecological suffering it can and has caused. :suffering:

There's a lot going on, and I used to be in the field before I found hard science, so I'll do a long bullet by bullet post

1) A lot of it has to do with mental illness being more recognized than it was in the past. Mental illness in and of itself is a relatively young field because we didn't have any tools to really understand the brain or neurochemistry before. Humans using only 10% of our brain came from a misunderstanding of not being able to see the small neurological structure of the brain, only larger nerves). So a large part of the 'epidemic' of mental illness is the fact that we are able to actually see it. In the past, you kept these problems to yourself, drunk them or drugged them away. You also have to remember, psychiatric drugs are only about 60 or so years old, with Thorazine being the first real psychiatric drug. Its the same deal with autism.

Autism rates went up because understanding and diagnostic procedures of autism got better. So on one hand you have this system of diagnosis and treatment that was much better than it was in the past, when mental illness was something shameful. That's why you're seeing more cases. It never really went up, it was always there and we just have a better understanding of it. So on one, its an increase in knowledge, diagnostic treatments and cultural acceptance.

2) Mental health treatment is abysmal. Typically, all mental health issues are chronic conditions which never go away. CBT (or the new version, DBT) + Medication is the most effective treatment for mental illness. If you don't know what DBT is, its dialetical behavioral therapy. Its design is to teach you to help yourself, being aware of harmful thought patterns and changing them. A lot of mental illness like depression and anxiety derive from a mis-regulation of brain circuitry, where you're basically caught in a loop and going over and over negative thoughts again and again. This is why electroshock works with depression, it short-circuits that thought loop and gives you a reset (this is another working theory as to why ketamine treats depression as well). The problem is that companies only want to pay for meds, not for DBT or CBT. Without the talking component, mental illness is very difficult to overcome. You may be able to function with meds, but your quality of life won't be as good.

Insurance doesn't want to pay for these therapeutic methods, which allows mental illness to persist and be stronger than it would be. The meds are viewed as 'enough', when they really aren't. Meds allow you to function. CBT/DBT allows you to get better, think healthier, and alter destructive behaviors on your own since your therapist can't be there 24/7.

3) Collapse of social support networks. Social media has largely replaced traditional social networks such as family, friends, etc. You see high divorce rates, destruction of family life. The family is still the number one network of support above all else, especially if you can't afford treatment. I've been in academia, and foreign students have a much more difficult time emotionally because they don't have a familial support structure present. Our brains are designed for small groups of people we trust and love. Up until recent times, the most a person traveled from where he was born was 20 miles. Now, we can be thousands of miles away in a few hours. The need for work, university and jobs cause people to travel farther away from their natural support networks, so they find themselves isolated out of necessity. Our brains simply aren't used to this sort of thing. Social media and the internet is no substitute for this. There's also the loss of community because of this as well. Since everyone travels, moves around, everyone is a stranger. As wages stagnate and the job situation gets worse, people will travel more and more frequently. So you have communities of strangers with no social support networks.

4) Loss of identity. People have already touched on this, but its true. In adolescent psyche, a malleable identity (one that you keep switching) is extremely detrimental to your mental health. Identity is formed in adolescence. If you keep moving it around (pansexual, trans, otherkin, whatever), your mental health will deteriorate. The problem is modern culture puts more value on these identities than your accomplishments, so to gain recognition you have to shift your identity around instead of accomplishing something. You're a white male who developed a game with sexy women? MISOGYNIST. You were a man but now a woman and developed a game with sexy women? EMPOWERING. When your accomplishments don't matter and you're forced to shift your identity around to gain social acceptance, it will cause significant dysfunction. Despite the value that culture places on minority identity, you still can't define self-worth by being trans or by simply being a woman. Its just not enough, so you get this vicious cycle. In modern identity politics, male gender roles are still strong, but masculinity is seen as a negative. The problem is that nobody wants to even interpret what modern masculinity is. You still have these feelings driven by hormones and biology and modern culture says that's wrong, but doesn't tell you how to fix it or channel it positively while still being masculine. Or what it even means to be a man anymore. Men are still mocked for discussing their feelings if they feel marginalized or just plain miserable. This leads to not discussing your problems and holding everything inward. This affects women as well. To be a woman is to be a victim, sexually, wage-wise, employment wise, in every aspect of society. That's what femininity has become. Women are rewarded for being perpetual victims, which doesn't allow them to feel strong. This puts them with feelings of helplessness and isolation. Especially since other women can be much crueler than men, so they are isolated as well. Not to mention how these factors have affected relationships and driven a huge wedge between men and women, leaving both lonelier and more isolated from one another. This is why modern identity politics is so dysfunctional.

So that's basically why you're seeing higher levels of mental illness.

you're speaking like a tree hugging hippie nut.
I'm not some anprim fag who hates science and modern medicine. I get vaccinated and am not scared of GMOs, I think organic food is a waste. I don't hate technology I just think accessibility and sustainability in it's design shouldn't be considered special interests, it should be standard. I'm just an animist and polytheist. Call me Pagan if you will but I don't see myself as a hippie. I think the mental health issues of society are caused partially due to our separation from nature and abandoning the ways of our ancestors for imperialist Semitic religions. This is just my personal perspective on why mental illness could be more common today from a religious angle.

There are also more practical issues surrounding this problem that other Kiwis have commented on. I think free access to psychotherapy and medication would go a long way so at least people have no financial excuse to remain sick. It was shortsighted to close down all these institutions for the mentally ill and then privatize most of the therapy and drugs, making it less accessible especially for maladjusted lower income mentally ill people like the homeless you see that need it to help regain perspective on reality and ultimately better their lives. Campaigns to combat stigma are essential in my view and it's sad Tumblr has appropriated this and twisted it into an excuse to glorify mental illness and treat it as an identity rather than an illness.
