Culture Lorde cancels trip to Israel - Will still perform in Russia ironically

Jerusalem (AFP) - New Zealand singer Lorde has cancelled a planned show in Israel after facing pressure from supporters of a boycott of the Jewish state over its occupation of Palestinian territory.

The 21-year-old, who enjoyed phenomenal success while still a teenager, announced last week a Tel Aviv performance in June as part of a tour.

After criticism from international and New Zealand activists, Lorde announced on Sunday she was cancelling the performance in Israel.

"I've received an overwhelming number of messages & letters and have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show," Lorde wrote in a statement distributed by Naranjah, the Israeli promoters of her Tel Aviv show.

"I'm not too proud to admit I didn't make the right call on this one," she said of the initial decision to perform in Israel. "I'm truly sorry to reverse my commitment to come play for you. I hope one day we can all dance."

In a statement to AFP, Naranjah said: "We forgive Lorde and wish her a successful tour in Russia and the US."

The movement behind the pressure on Lorde is known as BDS -- Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions -- and says it is inspired by the campaign that targeted South Africa's apartheid regime and is seeking an end to Israel's occupation of the West Bank.

In July, BDS activists failed to get Radiohead to call off its show in Tel Aviv despite heavy pressure from artists such as Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and director Ken Loach.

Israel sees BDS as a strategic threat and accuses it of anti-Semitism -- a claim activists firmly deny, calling it an attempt to discredit them.

A few politically active musicians have called off shows in Israel over the past years, including Lauryn Hill and Elvis Costello.

Should've said she felt the political climate was too agitated or some bullshit like that, maybe even blame Trump, instead of admitting she's folding to Islamophiles.

How dare you lorde, the poor Palestinian people fear for their lives every day, and you want to bring music and happiness to the area? For shame.

Probably didn’t sell enough tickets.

I'd seriously doubt it. Even though Israel is brutally expensive (second highest cost of living relative to income among OECD countries) and has been getting progressively more so as the value of the NIS has made such huge gains in the last year (second strongest currency per Deutsche Bank), when big name foreign performers come to Israel (admittedly, usually bigger than Lorde), they rarely have any trouble selling out. This is probably just Lorde being a dumb bitch who didn't realize that SJWs hated Israel and that she couldn't perform there without backlash.

So she’s just a dumb cunt.

I think it was BDS that convinced her not to do it. BDS is pretty funny how they ignore shit like Morocco or the fact that Russia has a pretty human rights record itself. Say what you want about the territories, but being okay with her performing in Russia as opposed to Israel when you call yourselves pro-human rights is pretty funny.

I will say though, sometimes BDS is hilarious. For example, they pushed for a boycott of Sodastream on the grounds that they had facilities located in the West Bank. Eventually they caved and relocated to Israel proper. And so 500 Palestinians who had good jobs became instantly unemployed, since they couldn't work in the new factory in the Negev, which is part of pre-67 Israeli territory. Earlier this year 74 of them got work permits from Israel to come back to work for Sodastream, but it still means that BDS cost 426 Arab workers their jobs. And given the number of children they have, they harmed literally thousands of Arabs to mildly inconvenience a successful Israeli business.

Just for the fun of it the Maori people should try to ban her from playing in NZ ever again for the same reason.

BDS and their sister organization SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine) are very thinly veiled antisemitic groups. BDS essentially wants the world to treat Israel like another North Korea, with total isolation as to starve out the "zionists" until they collapse. They also are supporters of Hamas, believing that the rocket attacks and non-negotiation with Israel is a legitimate tactic against the "oppressors". iirc the BDS organization is banned from operation in a lot of places in Germany and the UK due to its antisemitic stances and actions.

SJP is something of the college branch of BDS. They have been known to hunt down, harass and intimidate college students simply for being Jewish, attack Jewish businesses, and have lead themselves to get barred from college campuses.

Even though these groups don't really hide what they stand for, celebs still cater to them for whatever reason.

Man, I can just imagine how that went.

"What? You DON'T want us putting our Jewish business in a place that hates Jews, while also giving more work to our own people and reducing the odds of someone burning our expensive factory to the ground? Well, you're really twisting our arm, but..."

To make things worse (for the palestinians but funny for us) the company was super fucking liberal and treated the Palestinians very well.

Should BDS get its own thread? Even people who suck Hamas and Hezbollah's cocks think BDS is a crazy cult.
