Rumor has it that so many of these people move to LA because your location affects your metrics, so Youtube plays favorites based on where you live.

What's stupid about that is the obvious solution is to just get a proxy server out of LA if that's all your problem is.

This is a year or two out of date, but I saw a break down of how PewDiePie took over youtube.

The long story was youtube use(d) a magic metric of video upload location + channel relevance + popularity of video & channel.
So PewDiePie build a base in Europe, then went to the US and uploaded there. So his earlier Euro videos got home field advantage in Europe, and the popularity of them pushed his US uploads even higher.

They move to LA for a combination factors, but primarily based on "its easy to collaborate with other artists (and sell out to the man) when you're already in town and don't need to travel far for meetings".

I followed a RT from Jake Alleys Twitter to this blog post which includes statements by Patreon itself about it's own vision for the platform. They basically want highly successful creators, not a lot of people earning small or moderate amounts through the site.

It's an interesting read and makes obvious why they don't care if the new fee structure makes a lot of people leave the platform. They want to attract people who are already somewhat successful and have them become moreso.

A true and honest Financial Succesful Creator™ could grow to the point of no longer needing Patreon (either by breaking through mainstream media or running his own crowdsource and keeping that 5%). I completely agree. PayPal donation links, Patreon pages, online stores, sponsorships, and other ways of making money on the side should NOT be the primary income for these pan-handlers. I have nothing against people making money on the side through Patreon or something. But people shouldn't whine when their side money maker isn't giving them enough money. That is why they need a job, or to invest in stocks, or do SOMETHING other than e-begging.

This is why when I hear one of these exceptional individuals whine about not getting money on Patreon or something, I immediately unsubscribe from them. Seriously. Get a job if you aren't getting the type of money you need. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp for the majority of the internet?

I was skeptical of this for a second, but it's definitely consistent with the fact that Patreon's solution was to pass on the $0.38 Paypal fee to the customers. Previously, they were doing this themselves and cutting Paypal out.

As corrupt and shitty as Paypal is, they're actually licensed to transmit money like that. Patreon isn't.

I don't like the implications of this. It could really fuck up cryptocurrency, for one thing.

No, it can't, because it is not a person doing the transmission with cryptocurrency. It's a protocol with no human intermediaries required. This is why Bitcoin was revolutionary. Previous systems of Internet currencies required human intermediaries, and those people inevitably got regulated and then thrown in prison for money laundering, like with e-Gold or Liberty Reserve, which I collectively lost 80k of deposits in when they got nabbed by the feds.

Possibly, the way they were doing it is actually illegal.

It was 100% illegal. If I did the same as a notorious thought criminal I would actually go to jail. Plenty of people have actually gone to jail for acting similarly as a deposit holder and money transmitter, like the above two companies I listed.

So Patreon has decided it wants to concentrate on being a patronage system for actual artists and projects trying to go full time? Like the word Patronage is supposed to mean?

The whole concept of Patreon is crowdsourcing the kind of creative funding available in Renaissance Italy from the Medicis and other big families. That matches up with their newly stated goal of large, sustainable "creators" being their core base.

Because they don't want to be a funding platform for failures. They literally say that in the article I linked above. They want to attract creators who actually produce content on a regular basis and earn substantial amounts doing so, not be a proxy charity for people who do nothing but ebeg (youcaring already exists for that).

It's a smart move on their part and allows them to differentiate themselves from other crowdfunding platforms. It will purge the kind of "creators" they explicitly don't want and make their brand more valuable.

And they probably find it politically distasteful to directly purge the trannies and other trash.

I have seen some amazing artists (Guweiz comes to mind) that cannot get anywhere near the money that Zoe, MooMoo,Nigri, etc pull in, and that has ALWAYS pissed me off. The only thing I can think though is that true talent needs no one place. Those that are talented (alex ross, guweiz,bob ross) will always make something happen because the discipline needed to be more than just a hack demands work. But that talent will always ALWAYS draw money from people buying it because they are GOOD. When I see Zoe Quinn, and Ali Rapp (those two most of all) and ask "what talent do they possess?" and then look at what these thirsty neckbeards throw at them a month?
