Maga is just center left Dems if they actually did their jobs. Because rinos/GOP and dinos/dems were the do nothing party before Trump came in. So we've got 90s Dems but they actually do the things they say vs socialists. As a 90s Dem who was mostly upset Dems lied and never fulfilled their promises I enjoy that Republicans are actually implementing policies I was embracing since high school. And the lolcow response from unipartiers and modern Dems is glorious.
MAGA is just national socialism rebranded as something new. The GOP of the 90s was basically Neoliberal.

Care to expand on what a 90's Republican policy standpoint would be?

I wasnt politically active in the 90s, but I feel like MAGA is not really a reflection of the 90's Democrat platform, due to the, I think, heavy focus they would have had on expanding the welfare state. MAGA supporters seem to be more for restraining the welfare state.

I guess a section of 90's repubs would have been vehemently anti gay, and anti degeneracy (like tattoos, weed, alternative culture). where as now it's just accepted as something that cant be changed.

It's so far out there's no telling, but I bet if she gets the nomination, she'll start leaning into the old "Sandy Cortez" name to seem more white.
If she gets the nomination, she's going to lean so heavily into her artificial Latina persona that she's going to sound like an old Speedy Gonzalez cartoon. She is definitely not the kind of politician who thinks that seeming more white is a good idea.

90s Republicans were.. Newt Gingrich. He did a lot of good, but they also folded a lot on shit like the assault weapons ban. They were weak. I wish they'd be more anti-weed now, fuck that. Otherwise mostly fiscally good and stopped Hillary's socialized medicine program. That's about it.

Wiki I know but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_with_America

There's a good case that a lot of the benefits in the 90s economy came off from Newt's strong stance against Clinton.

Oh boy, an ICE detention center is coming to my state. I wonder if the Democrats in the executive branch are going to used coded language to rile up their lunatic base.

ah yeah, the classic argument that Clinton was really good on the economy, even had a budget surplus.

If I remember correctly, all his surpluses were due to overpayment into social security, which the government claimed as income, instead of held on to. Otherwise, we still had a deficit.

I also think that might have been one of the reasons Bush 2 wanted to privatize social security (e.g. allow the money collected to be invested) because the government spending those surpluses fucked up the program's long term viability.

Well elections Canada has finally validated the Alberta Separation petition so there’s a chance that seperation will be on the referendum ballot in October. After that Canada won’t really last long. Saskatchewan will likely join Alberta, Quebec will have to follow through on their threats or shut up, and all that would be left would be a gerrymandered Chile as the country would get hollowed out.
Can you please show me maps of these bad outcomes for Canada?

Muh fiscal conservatism in regards to government spending and global free markets are the biggest 90's republicanism things that are still around. Thomas Massie is the one that rants and raves about those things the most but only to counter signal Trump.

Democrats in the 90s as in what they stated. Not what they did. Bill Clinton's platform was against the progression of LGBT, against the expansion of abortion, against illegal immigration etc. also Republican and Democrats in the 90s-2010s did nothing but warhawk. It's why the Republican and Democrat uniparty were known as the do nothing party until Trump came in. Trump and Biden were the first presidents to not start an endless war cycle in the middle east. Trump was the first president to attack welfare fraud. The first president to actually send expired visas home etc. Clinton said he would do all of that. Trump actually did it. Hence Trump is a 90s Democrat in action rather than words.

I said Newt stood up against him, and that helped it. Clinton and Hillary wanted socialized medicine and so on in the 90s. People forget that now. I was praising Newt and the GOP congress for holding it off.

I get all my financial advice from discount 2002 AVGN.

Trump was the first president to attack welfare fraud.
With the money they've been clawing back they could probably do more tax cuts but the Pentagon has also been asking for more money so it's all just getting rolled over sideways at least for this fiscal year.

Clawing back billions and billions and billions but you're still getting taxed to fuel these neutered programs and agencies so the money just sits there collecting dust and the government runs on use or lose so they have to spend the money somehow.

The Big Short.png
Hedge funds have accumulated the most negative bets on the Canadian dollar in two years as the threat of American tariffs drags on the currency.
Leveraged money managers held 99,823 contracts tied to wagers on a weaker loonie in the week ending July 21, according to Commodity Futures Trading Commission data released on Friday. That’s the largest amount going back to August 2024.
The negative positioning comes as Canada’s currency heads for its worst weekly performance in five. The loonie has fallen 0.5% this week against its US counterpart, pressured lower by escalating trade tensions between the neighboring nations.

Short position.png

Earlier this week, the Trump administration vowed to impose a fresh 50% tariff on some Canadian goods over what it said was unfair treatment of American alcohol, cars and dairy. That’s added to pressure on the loonie, which has underperformed most of its major peers this year due to softness in the Canadian economy and an unfavorable interest-rate differential with the US.

no I got that. I was just referencing an argument I heard a bunch, back in the 2000s. People used to get on bush for spending the surplus, not realizing it wasnt a surplus and not realizing a lot of the economic success was due to, apparently, Newt.
Also something something, welfare reform is due to Newt.

Honestly we need a good legislator in congress, like him. Im not seeing it. I had respect for Nancy Pelosi, even though I hated her policies, because she could bully and get things done.

Well yeah, the reps never really do fully what they say do they. As I've always said:

The democrats have bad ideas and they usually push them

The Republicans have great ideas and usually don't push them.

For now the borders are at least controlled, so.. I try not to wander too much on priorities.
