Freudian slip
/ˌfroidēən ˈslip/
A Freudian slip—also known by its formal name, parapraxis—is an unintentional error in speech, memory, or physical action that is believed to reveal an unconscious desire, conflict, or hidden thought.
Origin and Theory
    • Sigmund Freud: The famous Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis introduced the concept in his 1901 book, [The Psychopathology of Everyday Life] (loebclassics.com).
    • Unconscious Mind: Freud argued that these slips are never truly accidental; rather, they occur when normal mental control weakens, allowing repressed thoughts or hidden urges to slip past our conscious defenses.
Common Examples
    • Slips of the Tongue: Accidentally calling a current partner by the name of an ex-partner
