That’s highly dependent on the venue. Most venues are multipurpose, not great for sound. If you go to a good Jazz club or a bowl or some other place optimized for music, you will get very good sound quality that a recording can’t reach.

Unless you are spending big bucks on a Hi-Fi setup with separate amp, speakers, and subwoofer, you’re not getting anywhere near the authentic thump of an acoustic bass or the colorful overtones of a saxophone.

The good faith argument against it is that, if we're not developing our own things in house, then we're reliant on an Israeli contractor to maintain and secure that system.

But instead of just leading with that fact, he starts by saying "We're going to get Greenland, and if they don't give it to us, we'll just take it," starting a round of squealing and kvetching that drowns out the issue at hand. Most people still don't know why Trump wants Greenland, even conservatives.

Same with the ballroom. Instead of pointing out what a horrendous security risk that hiring out random hotel ballrooms is and the many previous assassination attempts throughout US history at outsourced ballrooms events, he leads with "It's going to be beautiful, it's going to be the biggest, most lavish, bestest ballroom in the world" and everybody goes crazy and complains about the waste of money and Trump's taste in decor.

Sometimes I think he does this on purpose because he enjoys the chaos and pissing and moaning from the libs. As amusing as this can be, it's not the most effective way to get things done though. I voted for Trump because I wanted him to get things done. Sometimes he does get things done, but other times, his poor communication style is a hindrance rather than a help. I don't regret voting for him, but he does annoy me on a pretty regular basis.

There's a reason I used the phrasing I did. There's a great multitude of bands and musicians out there who are just not very good. Even when all of them can play their instruments very well, several still suck at composition, requiring major studio magic that can't be replicated live to make their songs sound coherent. And even when you have musicians who can play their instruments and work together to make a song that isn't a jumbled mess, they have the stage presence and charisma of a wet towel.

Then there's the engineering side of a good show. Even if you have a world-class band, the sound engineering can make or break a show. I've been to shows of world class bands in world-class venues where the person running the sound board clearly phoned it in. As a result, the show was boring, over-loud, sonic mush. Conversely, I've been to shows where the musicians were mid, the songs were mid, and the venue had a reputation for sucking, but the sound engineers were on top of their game that night, and as a result, both the crowd and the band had fun.

To tie this back to politics and make it slightly less off-topic, I think Trump should sign an EO which mandates that every live sound engineer who scoops the mids out of a mix shall be suspended form their toes with piano wire and beaten with a tuba.

I agree engineering is a big part. I also personally believe that engineers who can mix live successfully are generally better at studio mixing than engineers who don’t do live or avoid it.

The best concerts for me, or the best way to experience live music, are ones with zero expectation: just popping into a venue on a random night. Of course there are stinkers, but not knowing what you’re getting and being pleasantly surprised is a lot more satisfying than going to some overproduced circus act. This works for all genres (it does help to know which venues are ‘reliable’ at staging competent acts).
