The problem with this study is that it analyzes current power use for data centers through 2024, when many of the planned data centers aren't even built yet. It doesn't address the projected power use of data centers which is estimated to be 2.6 trillion kwh by 2030.

It also doesn't address that the infrastructure we currently have isn't stable enough to support the projected data centers that are waiting to be built. The cost of upgrading the electrical grid will fall on the public, while the profits from the data centers will remain in private hands.

If the AI companies wanted to pay for nuclear power plants and desalination plants at their own expense and share them with the public, I would feel entirely differently about the whole subject. But that idea's not on the table at all.

I've been watching his show again recently and THIS close to just giving up on it. Suggestions for alternative things to watch/listen to would also be very appreciated from anyone who sees this by the way. It's not even about his opinions but like you said the mental illness on display is just too much. He constantly gets (himself) extremely angry at the drop of a hat, when he's not either mumbling inaudibly or cackling like a maniac. Also I couldn't help but notice that the episodes never have sponsors anymore like they always used to. Edit: I fucked up my projected power use numbers. The estimated power use is 945 terawatt hours by 2030. 2.6 trillion is the number of gallons of water that data centers are projected to use by 2030, mostly to generate power.

Yes, it was a retrospective analysis up to and including 2025 (not 2024 iirc but I can't be bothered to re-open the link so I'll concede that point if you actually checked), I posted it to preempt an argument that people were upset about datacenters now because increased power bills, not to start a debate on the future.

I'm tired too. I agree that current energy costs are not being driven by data center use in most cases, because not that many data centers are up yet, and I honestly don't feel like debating about the subject rn.
