First time he ran, I maybe get it, sure the dude is awkward as hell but he is yelling the things they want. But after that first term, and everything since then. Even if you ignore the criminal behavior and real clear ties to Epstein... the dude doesn't even seem to be a human being. He lives in his own weird little world and exists in the same reality as us for about five minutes out of every public appearance.
Im not a Kamala Harris fan, or a Biden Fan... but surely either of them (with biden stepping down quickly) would have been a common sense better choice.
Go rewatch the 2016 debates. Trump is actually semi-coherent, (the 2016 debates prove more than anything that 2026 Trump has dementia but that is another topic) and sells himself as a "rich guy who stands up for the common man".
When the subject of tax loopholes comes up, he says Clinton won't do anything because "her friends" use the same loopholes he does, and implies he can fix it because he has used the system himself. When debating Republicans in the primaries he mocks them for taking rich people's donations while not actually enacting policies. When controversial topics like immigration or Islam came up, he used socially-unacceptable language that appealed to people with socially-unacceptable thoughts on those topics. When people tried to shame him, he basically said "idgaf" and carried on-and this had HUGE appeal at a time when so-called "Cancel culture" was becoming a thing.
I am NOT saying he was right about any of this, just pointing out that in 2016, Trump said a lot of things that struck a chord with a lot of people.
On "hard" issues like economics, he heavily targeted the Midwest/Rust Belt states, and reminded them their local industries had been offshored by Bill Clinton's NAFTA beginning in the 1990s. (whether it was 100% Clinton or NAFTA's fault is another matter, I am referring to Trump's messaging + longstanding pre-existing public perception in these areas.)
At the time he had zero political history, so it was extremely easy for him to call out other politicians. And at the time, saying the kind of things he said about illegal aliens or Muslims was actually pushing the envelope. And his "idgaf" attitude made him appealing to a lot of people who already had contempt for mainstream politicians, and/or had similarly socially unacceptable views they were afraid to openly say. And his economic messaging strongly resonated in areas of the U.S. heavily affected by industries moving elsewhere.
This is where the cult following started. It is the nature of all cults that the leader is followed beyond any reason, hence why he still has a following despite breaking most of his promises, doing basically everything he criticized his 2016 opponents for, and also doing all the things listed in this thread.
