What old media are you watching? - Since new media isn't worth watching

As much as I hate the current Marvel multiverse stuff I think that a movie with all the old Punishers (Lundgren, Jane, Stevenson, Bernthal) would be pretty amazing if they leaned into the R rating.

As to old media, I've recently been watching Blakes 7. It's cheap. The sets are almost certainly reused from Dr Who. It was all made on a budget of £50 an episode. Yet I am really enjoying it. It's so bad and low budget that it's just endearing and the writing is pretty good. The characters are pretty good as well. It stands as a really interesting counterpoint to the optimistic sci-fi that the US was known for.
Sure, Blake's 7 had typical low-budget effects and props and weapons (though I am somewhat a fan of the aesthetic of greebled-up weapon props in British scifi TV of the 60s and 70s) and was often set on planets played by quarries and forests but it was mostly pretty sharp, including Paul Darrow as the amoral computer genius Kerr Avon

This was the Superman I grew up with, great tv and proof a woman can run a Superhero property if she cares about it and puts her ego aside.

They fired all the writers after season one because the ratings were mid. Instead of canceling it like a normal network they just kept the lights on and started cutting budgets. It’s a zombie show. They should’ve put a bullet in it after season one.

Plus they canned Cat Grant and Jimmy Olsen, which is too bad because the only thing that show had going for it was the journalism angle.

The first season is still solid though. Apart from the pilot movie, I recommend the episode where Clark drags Lois to the farm ("The Green, Green Glow of Home") and the one where some tabloid is trying to put the Daily Planet out of business ("The Rival")

Season one is the strongest and maybe it is just my memories of watching it back in the day, but I enjoy the whole run, more than half the stuff on tv today.

It is enjoyable comfort food tv and I like the cast, I have fun watching it.

Swamp Thing (1982) was an interesting Wes Craven movie. This was before Craven got big with Elm Street and when comic book movies were not big as it came out between the second and third Reeves Superman installments. The practical effects were good even though the plot was formulaic.
I've been meaning to give that another shot sometime
I vaguely recall being bored with it

Lois And Clark New Adventures with Dean Cain was something I'd catch every now and then
I don't recall hating it but I don't really remember caring much either, but there's an ad for it in the copy of Earnest Saves Christmas where it's just Lois and Clark playing off each other and they REALLY had it
it's never enough to make me watch it but it's enough that it stands out

Back when RadioShack still existed, every ad break you'd see Hatcher eye-fucking Howie Long.

The company literally told the ad agency, “We need the exact same Lois and Clark gimmick but make it about cordless phones". Howie is another athlete turned actor just like Dean Cain.

Starting Over (1979)

1000164000.jpg

Burt Reynolds's wife, Candice Bergen, decides she’s leaving him because she wants to be a singer-songwriter(?). She needs to find herself. Also she’s been cheating on him the whole time.:shit-eating:

1000164001.jpg

She’s not even good at it. That’s the gag. She comes back later and sings him this reconciliation song she wrote and the second she opens her mouth Burt goes soft.

1000164014.jpg

Anyway, Burt moves back home. He attends a divorced men’s support group which meets in a basement. His family immediately hooks him up with Jill Clayburgh, who is a fucking loon. It’s a movie about a man discovering that the grass isn’t always greener, it’s just a different shade of shit.

1000164002.jpg

Classic 70s “men are sad too” cinema. This is the last time Burt Reynolds actually made an effort in a movie. He is clean-shaven and doesn't have a shit eating grin all the time. Jill Clayburgh filed the patent on this type of character. For later versions, see Amanda Plummer in The Fisher King, Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give and Emma Thompson in Last Chance Harvey. Jill was in a league of her own though: she was uniquely gifted at seeming damaged but also very horny.

1000164008.jpg

Candice is good at playing ice queens, but I think that’s just because she has no range. However, in this movie she has to caterwaul at Burt in every scene. For a woman to publicly sing badly takes balls. She makes the Hula Hana girl sound like Linda Ronstadt.

1000164018.jpg

The movie is funny, but not in a regular rom-com way. You probably need to be slightly dead inside to get all the humor.

Does this count since it is almost 20 years old. it is a classic run of episodes that entertained me in a hard time in my life. I love old school AVGN.

I will always have a soft spot for the Nerd, the earliest episodes are the fucking best and they hold up more than any of the later episodes. It’s because later on, James started playing games he wasn’t emotionally invested in, whereas in the early seasons he was roasting the games he grew up with.

Saturday morning always makes me nostalgic for cartoons, and there's this one called Kidd Video that more or less became lost media because the whole gimmick of the show was constant licensed music. In a rare instance of using AI constructively, some kind autist on YouTube has been restoring the show to the best of his ability.

It's such a wholesome little time capsule of the era.

Gloria (1980)

1000164511.jpg

John Cassavetes decides to make a real movie for once instead of two hours of people screaming in a living room. Gena Rowlands is this ex-con living in the South Bronx who is just trying to borrow a cup of coffee. She knocks on the door, the mom’s like “hey can you watch my kid for five minutes while we get murdered.” Gloria’s left standing there like “WTF is this?!" while holding a ledger full of mob money. Then the shotgun orchestra starts and she’s babysitting a six-year-old named Phil through Manhattan while the mob tries to paint the sidewalk with both of them. Every scene is her shooting a car full of guys and calling Phil a little shit while she reloads.

1000164498.jpg

1000164515.jpg

So, John Cassavetes. You already know what that means. Cassavetes doesn’t give a fuck about story logic. Everything’s ad libbed, the whole thing takes place in this slightly heightened reality where people exist at max volume. The biggest flaw in the script is there’s no good reason why she can’t just call the police. She mumbles something about the cops wanting to arrest her. Can't she just drop Phil off at a police station?:blart:

1000164512.jpg

It’s the same movie as Léon and Road to Perdition and Logan. Grizzled adult gets stuck with someone the mob wants dead. The Léon comparisons are glaringly obvious and Luc Besson almost certainly ripped off this entire movie.

1000164506.jpg

The film effectively ends during the subway chase. After that it’s just thirty-five minutes of everyone going through the motions. I happen to like Gena Rowlands, so I can deal with it. Her physical resemblance to Cathy Moriarty (another actress I like) is striking and they're both very funny in a trashy Long Island kind of way.

1000164500.jpg

John Adames has this weird quality where he looks like a mini-me of Anthony Cumia. The kid is constantly arguing with Gloria no matter what she does. In his defense, he’s an amusing caricature of a spic kid in a pimp shirt. He makes a pass at Gloria at one point.:suffering:

1000164509.jpg

The rest of the cast is fine but the movie falls into that seventies trope of Vito Spatafore clones in tracksuits. No wonder Hollywood has to hire the same three or four high voltage guys to play mobsters. It's very difficult to take these fat balding wops seriously, they are comedic by nature. 4 stars

1000164514.jpg

Sidney Lumet remade this movie in '99 with Sharon Stone. I’m not a Sharon Stone fan (far from it) but I’m almost curious enough to seek it out. From what I hear it’s a much more audience-friendly version for people who find Cassavetes pretentious. Naturally Stone’s acting is worse.

I'm not sure if it counts as "old" per se, but I rewatched Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation last night and about halfway through I realized it was just a rehash of the plot of Swordfish.
Swordfish is the dumbest movie ever and I honestly think John Travolta 'promoting' his films on Oprah was a kiss of death. He really thought he was in a Bergman film.

1000164540.jpg

Remember The General’s Daughter? The press tour for that movie was totally over the top and the actual plot is James Cromwell being the obvious culprit. He let his daughter freeze to death in a field to teach her a lesson I guess. And then this dummy general tries to cover it up but not very well.

1000164541.jpg

In Swordfish Travolta tries to be this elite hacker who’s also fighting mideast terrorists at the same time.:semperfidelis:

Why is this premise so complicated? Hugh Jackman’s a convicted hacker who’s legally banned from ever touching a computer again. He gets out of prison, tries to go straight, and then gets dragged right back into crime. Simple as.

Instead we got "anti-hero" Travolta with frosted hair and Vegas magician goatee.
