The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

it's still way less pozzed than other mainstream distros like ubuntu, debian, fedora, probably even arch (not sure about the last one). if you want even less pozzed you could use OpenBSD maybe.
Ubuntu is 100% pozzed, and nobody should use it. Arch and Debian are pretty reliable and are just boring these days; there is nothing that is pozzed about either of them.
I don't really care much for the systemd vs <other init systems> debate, though, and I prefer using GNOME over the other desktop environments, so that makes me a heretic.

OpenBSD (and the BSDs in general) are just too archaic IMO. I used to daily drive it and even used to buy the CDs, and outside of server use or running it on old Mac/Sun hardware, it's just not worth the hassle a lot of the time. They removed the Linux compatibility layer, which I was using for Skype at the time, and I just kind of went back to Windows XP 64-bit and didn't really use anything *nix for another 3 or 4 years. I tried it a few years ago, and AMD graphics wouldn't work properly because my 4-year-old card was too new. I wanted to muck around with it in QEMU/libvirt, and it is a PITA to get running there.

sorry but Debian isn't what it used to be, just search for mentions of it in the FOSS community thread. Went to shit after they killed Ian, including taking the systemd poison pill. Devuan forked because of it and is my distro of choice when a Devian is required but there's no strict dependency on systemd.

i wanted to install gentoo for fun but i heard something about it being pozzed?
Ya devs have a hard-line stance against hyprland and xlibre
They're starting to bend the knee to modern Linux stuff like merged usr and user services in openrc. I consider that a good thing but if you're an anti systemd purist you'll find more stuff creeping in as time goes on, beneficial or not.
Busybox support is killed hard dependence on gnutils for portage
Musl is still experimental second class support unlike void
Alt arch support is now somewhere under t2/sde, so id recommend that if you want a good source based distro from a guy so anti rust he got swatted for it
Support for alt inits beaten by artix and Devuan
Just not really a good distro anymore ngl. It used to be the go-to for having that level of control over weird hardware but too many devs jumped ship to other better projects and now it's just a lazily maintained mess
The more obscure your use case is too like youre using weird wms or have a Nvidia card youre probably gonna suffer because that kind of stuff doesn't get downstream patches, and contributing has gotten too painful like one user in this thread mentioned
Pozzing is part of the issue but the rest of it is just lack of maintainers that don't want to spend the time fixing simple stuff
It still has use cases but I got tired of dealing with them every time I had a bug only for it to never get patched and the longer I ran it the more bugs I ran into

This is often claimed, but it works pretty well as far as I am concerned, and I've been using it every day for the past 6 or so years. It's certainly a lot better than it used to be back in the 2000s.

You really have to be specific about what the actual problems with Debian are outside of systemd. I've had my complaints with it, but generally it is pretty solid.
Devuan forked because of it and is my distro of choice when a Devian is required but there's no strict dependency on systemd.
I actually tried Devuan out recently. It was mainly due to the age check stuff and seeing if there was a viable alternative. I wasn't impressed. I migrated a Debian machine to it and regretted it after about 2 days. I kept on with it for another month and then gave up.

Bonus points for the migration guide suggesting a script that will break your system.

I honestly think "pozzed" means "I didn't have to spend 30 hours fucking around with my system to have it work."

Why did you try to migrate, just do a clean install. Yeah, the docs might not be great here or there, but I wouldn't say it's unusable. I've been running it in virtual machines and containers for years and it has never been a problem.

I had a working Debian install, and it said there was a migration path.

If it doesn't work properly, then they shouldn't have it on the site or at least put a proper disclaimer.

I have to deal with AWS and corporate Windows installations that are fighting me every day and loads of other bullshit.
The last thing I want to be doing is having to fuck around figuring out why sound doesn't work on my own machine, because the Chrome sandbox isn't properly initiated in the login shell, and there is some stupid race condition with PipeWire, which results in my Bluetooth headset not working when I play Hell Divers.

That is the sort of grating shit that stopped me from moving to Linux a decade ago and seems to be solved in all of the major distros.

I am perfectly capable of fixing it; I just don't want to anymore. I own a Land Rover Defender; a Defender is the car equivalent of Linux in the 2000s. I can't be fixing my Land Rover and Linux; together that would be too much.

So when people tell me Debian is bad without any concrete reasons or some dickhead on YouTube said it wasn't "based" enough, while it's been humming away on my server, often for years without issue, I am just not interested in hearing it.

Basically if someone says "don't use distro x, it has systemd", ignore them. Systemd hate is autistic. Yeah it's monolithic and has feature creep etc, but it works really well and because it's been the standard for over a decade, every guide and piece of software will assume you use it, so not having it will cause way more problems than the competitors claim to solve.

but it works really well
Mashes X key.
No, it's really horrible and barely works. Sadly that's the state of the world. Anything else is better except for the fact that pretty much everyfuckingthing depends on some retarded systemd dependency these days.

I've still managed to entirely avoid Snap, Flatpak and Wayland so far though. Let's see how long that lasts.

It barely works people claim. Yet I've had very few problems.

What specifically barely works?

People should use what they want, even if they have bad taste.
Still, there’s something to be said for having a default for people who don’t know what they want and don’t understand what the differences between distros actually mean.

That is what I was getting at. Having "bad taste" in this context simply means "using something I don't approve of".

Mint gets a lot of shit from many of the more elitist tech/Linux YouTubers and the general elitist users.
Sure, you can get pretty much the same setup with Debian, but the Mint installation is the easiest of all the distros.

I've also considered switching to Devuan for quite a while, but I just could not see any practical benefits.

Systemd might not be perfect or even great, however it's so much better that there is one standard "mediocre" init system rather than distributions being fragmented with three "great" init systems.

I run Fedora on my main rig which is otherwise near what could be considered top of the line AMD in both CPU and GPU. Works otherwise perfectly with some minor issues that I'm not entirely sure are my fault or otherwise.

Then I have a modern (2019) laptop that's AMD as well and runs fine on Fedora.

The only time I've had issues with Fedora is when I've tried running it on this laptop I have from 2012 that's an Intel and nVidia GPU. Notably, as Nouveau is fucking garbage on a good day. Swapped it to Debian with the legacy driver repos enabled, and now it works otherwise fine.

Hello. I am windowshopping for my first PC (upgrading from shit laptops all my life) and have heard good things about linux. However, I know absolutely goddamned nothing about linux outside that 1: it has a learning cliff instead of a learning curve, and 2: is obscenely customizable once you get over said learning cliff

can someone give me a basic introduction? are there hand-holdy guides written by linux autists for this sort of thing?

i must doubly ask if linux is one of those operating systems that gets cucked over in general products and gaming spheres similar to macOS

Just install Linux Mint. When you run into a problem ask Claude.

Gaming is great through Steam, though you will have problems with certain games and their anticheats. The only other major problem I can see you having is not being able to use Adobe products. There's Davinci Resolve as the next best for video editing, but nothing will ever come close to Photoshop. (Fuck you GIMP)
