I've never been personally close to anyone with diabetes even though I'm familiar with talk of it and some symptoms and M600PL examples. Weight loss or gain is indicative of a health issue but how would someone lose weight with diabetes? I just assumed they stayed fat, maybe lose an extremity, and passed away due to heart or other organ failure.

Obligatory IANAD disclaimer, but as I understand it: you're full of glucose but it's not actually getting to where it needs to be, so your body doesn't think you have enough glucose - it's all stuck in your blood rather than making it to cells due to impeded/no insulin production - and so goes to your fat/muscle reserves for energy instead, ergo, weight loss.

I like to play the game 'Midwestern or Lesbian?' when I encounter tomboys because once you get far enough away from the city most women dress practical or for comfort and they don't run around in daisy dukes and cowboy boots or fancy dresses and hats. And the reason this isn't One Weird Trick is that besides electrolyte imbalance and hyperosmolar state, all that glucose stuck in your blood is tearing up your microcirculatory system.
