At bare minimum it's getting a strong start. Nolan has a pre-packaged audience due to the cult of personality he's amassed. how much staying power it has as word-of-mouth spreads remains to be seen. By weekend 2 we'll know for sure what direction it's headed. The size of the dropoff is the crucial indicator.

It took me until the Odyssey but I have to admit that Armond was right about Nolan all along.

Nolan is to blame in part for this. His Batman was highly praised, but it was too dark even for the dark knight. Gritty realistic too. I suppose it's a reaction to the hyper colorful Batman and Robin, which was too similar to the 60s version. This caused the pendulum to move to the hyperactive archetype.

It worked for Batman Begins overall because as the title says it was the start of Bruce as Batman so he's not going to have the stuff he has normally in portrayal that happens later in his career and same for having had time to fully develop into the character we know just yet.

Getting a sheboon to play the most beautiful woman in the world and a woman to play the greatest warrior in the world defines the movie more than any script ever would because it already shows how little respect you have for the culture that made it and the core material and what both your plans and intentions for it are.

The movie misunderstood the themes of what it’s adapting. Sincerely the nuance of the Cyclops scene wasn’t understood by Nolan and the movies adaption bastardizing that effectively destroys any message about being a good guest or good host.

Same with feeling shame about Troy. Troy, even in the Aenid, is doomed. The Trojan horse is effectively Athena divinely guiding her favored Odysseus. The Aenid literally has Aphrodite say “It’s not men destroying your city. It’s the gods.” when Aeneas is going to murder Helen. The Aenid actually does a good job with Helen, I like her being despised by all and her husband catching feelings at the last second.
