It’s quite clear his response to being bullied was to envy the power they held over him, and since Fatrick is too small-minded for any real abstract thought he could only ever conceive of direct applications of power like with how said bullies exercised it unto him. I can guarantee he attempted to bully children he perceived as weaker than himself in a cargo cult attempt to express that same power, but was taken as seriously as his attempts to bully people in his adulthood. The only abstract expression of power Fatrick has demonstrated is his attempt to verbally dismiss others words with his use of “child,” something that very clearly originates from aping mommy’s interactions with the children around him as she mother hened him at school.
It really cannot be overstated how much Fatrick differs from Norm in comparison. Norm knew that, especially as an entertainer, nobody really likes someone smarter than himself. Despite very often being the smartest man in the room, Norm would habitually pretend to be the dumbest; granted, this was largely under the motivation that it made it easier to act out the compulsion to crack wise all great comedians seem to be under.
I don't know if that is true. Most people can appreciate intelligence when it comes from someone who is just being themselves. Fatrick needs to flaunt it in your face, because if he did not, there would not be any chance you would come to that conclusion by yourself.
When people say they value intelligence, what they mean is they value earnest interest in topics that are reasonably outside societal monoculture. But niche interests are not inherently indicative of high intelligence, as evident by this very website, nor are highly intelligent people necessarily compelled to pursue niche interests. In order for people to interact socially or parasocially, there needs to be sufficient level of relatability between the two and once that perception shifts regarding one of the participants, it places an immutable yoke of inferiority on the other. Norm was as successful at comedy as he was because though the rational element of his audience understood he was a very intelligent man in his private life, the irrational social element of that same audience could latch onto the character he affected without risk of feeling inferior. This understanding of Norm generally increases fans’ appreciation of him, as it creates a further perception that he forwent an easier, more genuine, character all to further the quality of his craft.
