A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I’ve seen an increase in people complaining about flies around piled up garbage at the back of takeaways and certain foreign owned properties. I think it’s worthy of statistical study as a matter of public health. Rodent numbers too. Maybe you can get grant funding for this.

Everyone, including “the lads” in the England team, apparently, finds it hilarious that “the gaffer” has some adoring female fans. The manager in question, Thomas Tuchel, has become a bit of a thing on Mumsnet, with women discussing his prettiness, “delightful smile” and schtick.

“I think it’s just the whole managing England thing, it’s a vibe. A strange vibe, but a vibe nonetheless,” said one.

I don’t think it’s that strange to talk of this vibe, nor do I think Mumsnet is to be derided. All sorts of weird, wonderful and often deeply informed discussions occur on the platform. And it is no surprise to me that some women feel something of a frisson about this passionate German.

For me, the allure was illustrated by Tuchel’s searingly honest criticism of his players after Saturday’s Norway game, despite the fact that they won. “We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today,” said Tuchel. “I’m not happy with the performance. In every sense. We were lucky.”
Sure, the physical beefcake quality is on the pitch, notably in the shape of Jude Bellingham. But Tuchel’s “restless intelligence” is exciting to watch for those of us who, to be honest, find the backdrop of relentless optimism, and some of the games, to be a bit boring.

What Tuchel does that is unusual but attractive is that he refuses to infantilise his players. He tells it as he sees it. England did get lucky against Norway. His approach runs counter to much modern parenting and educational philosophy in which all must have prizes, all the time.

In school races, everyone gets a certificate for competing. In pass-the-parcel, everyone gets a toy of equal value. During my daughter’s master’s degree, the students received prizes from each other, ranging from best philosopher to best dressed. Isn’t that all lovely? Everyone’s a winner!

Tuchel, then, is a breath of fresh air because this is not a game he is playing. He praised the mentality of his team, but said they needed to do better. “My job is to evaluate performances objectively, not just celebrate the result,” he said. Well, yes, leave that to the fans.

Straight-talking is not cruel, and Tuchel has his eyes on the prize, not on making his players love him. Everyone has had teachers like this – a little strict, a little remote, but for whom one does the best work.

In treating his players like grown-ups who must take criticism as well as praise, Tuchel is showing a kind of leadership that is indeed appealing.
He is pushing his players on and will try everything to get them to improve their game, from banning refined carbs to new training techniques. He is smart, driven and intense.

I haven’t noticed his “lovely smile” as the Mumsnet crew have, but I have noticed that everything he says is 10 times more interesting than anything that so many of the gormless pundits say, who seem to make a fortune for regurgitating the bleedin’ obvious.

Tuchel’s passion and his refusal to spout platitudes are a real relief in the mountain of guff around these games. He is not there to heap more adulation on these highly paid young men – he is there to help them win.

Tough love is, indeed, a vibe.

It’s the same feel, the same scene. Young foreign men just loitering around. Deliveroo bikes skimming about, it stinks of weed, foreign languages fill the air.

I just hate it.

Can you imagine being a woman walking through Piccadilly Gardens on a Friday night after a few drinks? It is appallingly dangerous.

For what? What have we gained from all this?

Endless streams of Sudanese and other African/Arab men hanging around our town centres? Some deliver fast food? Others participate in the mass rape of young white girls?

Many in hotel/HMO accommodation paid for by the taxpayer.

Piccadilly Gardens may be a bit further ahead than other parts of Britain, but it’s coming. It happens slowly, then all of sudden - it’s faster than you can imagine.

Like I said.

A shithole.

I am very proud to lead a political party that is dedicated to reversing this process. Not just stopping it, but reversing it.

That is what Restore Britain was essentially founded to do.

Lol the article says Tuchel is straight talking and "tough love" but I saw him asked in an interview if Jordan Henderson might play in the final and he was very diplomatic about it. A real straight talker would have said "No chance, he's an utter fucking buffoon who managed to get a yellow card while sat on the bench, and broke his wrist while celebrating to Wonderwall and trying to climb over an advertising hoarding. Why bother playing these weird games of half banning, half restricting social media? British Transport Police have released images of a man wanted for an attempted rape on the Bakerloo line on the train (X)

The incident happened at around 11.40pm on Saturday 11 July. A man approached a lone woman on the train between Waterloo and Lambeth North station and exposed himself to her.

He then forcibly pulled the victim to the floor and attempted to rape her, however she fought back and subsequently fled the train at Lambeth North before alerting station staff.

The man stayed on the train and got off at Elephant and Castle Underground station. Officers have been working to track the man’s movements and believe he was also at Oxford Circus before the attack and Piccadilly Circus Underground station after it.

Officers are asking anyone who recognises the man in the images to text his name to 61016, quoting reference 948 of 11 July.

EDIT: a migrant has commited a double murder and suicide in Ballymena, NI. This makes the second migrant-family-murder in Ireland (the island) within a week. (X)

An eight-year-old girl was among three members of the same family found dead in what is being treated as a double murder and suicide.

A murder investigation was launched after the three people - a 41-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman and the girl - were found at a house on the Cullybackey Road in Ballymena at 09:00 BST on Monday.

It is understood the woman is the girl's mother.

Supt William Calderwood described how emergency services were met with a "shocking scene".

The family was originally from Poland, although it is understood the child was born in Northern Ireland. The honorary consul of Poland in Northern Ireland Jerome Mullen said he had never experienced such a tragedy in his 18 years in the job.

Police have said the cause of the deaths has not been formally established and they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths.

At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Calderwood said they were keeping an open mind, but they were working on a "strong hypothesis" of a "double murder followed by a sudden death".

He expressed his deepest sympathies to family members, friends and loved ones for their "unimaginable loss".

He reiterated that there was no ongoing risk to the public, but that there would be an increased police presence in the area.

He said the wider community had been left in shock and that the first responders were being provided with support.

He appealed for anyone with information - including CCTV and dashcam footage - to come forward.

He added that police were liaising with the Polish consulate.

Mullen said the family had been settled in Northern Ireland for some time, and he was "absolutely shattered and devastated" by the news.

"The Polish community has been living in Northern Ireland and has been very settled for 20 years," he said.

"This is the worst tragedy that I've come across in my experience."

He added that Poland had a full diplomatic presence in Northern Ireland and the consulate was providing assistance and support to the family circle.

At the scene on Tuesday morning, BBC News NI's Kelly Bonner said the area was subdued.

"The police cordon is still in place on the Cullybackey Road," she said.

"This is quite a quiet area, it is quite a rural road.

"For neighbours and people living in this community, they are still trying to come to terms with what has happened."


The MP for the area, Jim Allister of the Traditional Unionist Voice, said it added an "extra dimension of horror" knowing that an eight-year-old girl had died.

"My heart goes out to the relatives in the Ballymena area and to those in Poland. I am also mindful of the school friends of the child and the distress they will suffer," he said.

Allister also paid tribute to the first responders who attended the scene.

Justice Minister Naomi Long said she sent her heartfelt sympathy to family members affected by the deaths.

"I would urge anyone who needs support at this time to contact the services provided within the Health and Social Care system, and by the voluntary and community sector," the Alliance Party leader said.

Long said it was important family members and friends "affected by this tragedy are afforded privacy and respect".

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Thomas Gordon, said he was deeply saddened.

"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those who have lost their lives," he said.

"As investigations continue, I would urge anyone who may have information to contact the police."

Ulster Unionist Party leader Jon Burrows said the entire town was devastated and police should be given "patience and time" to complete their investigation.

"The more information the police can get out the better, because there is a community in shock," he said.

Sinn Féin assembly member Philip McGuigan said speculation about what had happened was not helpful.

He said anybody who could help police should come forward.

Option 3 is most likely, options 1 and 2 assumes Keir has a real will of his own.
