The Civil war was the last time that Americans were able to see the full cost of war on their soil but from then onwards war is something that America did to others and never happened to them. Sure you have veterans of wars but you don't turn on the news and see pictures of American children having their legs blow off by a missile strike or US cities reduced to rubble by bombing runs on a daily basis. 9/11, while a terrorist attack, was the first time in a long time that Americans got a taste of what it's like to be in war and it caused them to lose their minds for over a decade.
