Lest I sound like I'm making too many excuses for the Other Ditches, I don't think anything can prepare you for an Andy. Unlike most lolcow parents, they actually did do the best they could for Amby, but it's like having an egg fall off a third storey roof and trying to put it back together. It can't be done, and the insides will be all fucked up even if you get the outside right. They're also scared of him because he's huge and violent, and has tried to kill ALL of them, multiple times.

It's really hard to react to a completely irrational situation in a rational manner, when you're right in it.

Her biggest fuckup was pulling Amby out of the residential program at 12, when he wouldn't have aged out until he was 14. That was absolutely a huge mistake, which even someone as charitable as me cannot defend.

It's a combination of that, Geraldo, and the fact that the institutions were badly run and overcrowded, because a lot of people that were there didn't need to be.

Unfortunately, society reached for the wrecking ball when the proper tool would have been a pen (for writing bills to reform them). A lot of people that were there did need to be, and couldn't simply be absorbed by hospitals and community care.

The new rule was supposed to be "Least restrictive environment in which the individual does not pose a threat to themselves or others" but the important qualifier got left off.


The homeless and incarcerated populations started spiking exactly when the institutions closed.

When he was a child, around age 2, he had an undescended testicle, and had surgery to correct it, but the surgery failed.

At around age 7, he had a follow-up surgery, and had to have the stuck testicle essentially melon-balled out of him.

I don't think so, they never seemed to have much money, and Tawm was a long-haul trucker, so he was away a lot too.

It reads to me more like two blue collar people, with problems of their own, thinking like if they could just love him enough, he would somehow start to get better. He also did at a couple points- at the age of 20, he was training to be an assistant manager at McDonald's and made enough money to rent an apartment. A Best Pc's was legitimately successful in its own right, and even if it only made hobby-level money (not true, he had enough business he needed a ticket system, and paid taxes), it was still a business. The problem is Andy is just a bad person, made worse by the schizoaffective-depressive disorder he refuses to treat.

Fundamentally, it comes down to whether you believe he is the way he is because of nature or nurture, and I'm going with nature. Joe, Danielle, and Mike are all normal, decent people too.
