W.C. Fields and Me (1976)

I keep giving Rod Steiger another chance. I mean he's awful in every movie. Here he plays the vaudeville star turned film actor W.C. Fields. Every line reading sounds like me imitating Edward G. Robinson. ("Moses, seeee?"🤌) He's old and cheap and he likes to yell at the help.

The narration tells us Fields was paranoid. Okay... about what? Poverty? Being upstaged? They don't really explain it. He's just randomly exploding at people.

Jack Cassidy shows up as Lionel Barrymore.

Looking exactly like Burt Reynolds. Doesn't sound like Barrymore. Doesn't look like him. Doesn't seem aware Barrymore existed. At least Steiger glued a fake nose on.

Bernadette Peters shows up as one of Fields' casting couch "comediennes". Then she leaves like two minutes later. That's the smartest decision anybody makes in this film.

This is as bad as Cobb. 2 stars.
Did you ever see Steiger in The Loved One? I loved him in that movie.

A true classic, we need more action movies like this.

This banger, blows every MCU movie out of the water.

Still the best adaptation.

Burton was completely over Batman by the time it came out. A shame, because Returns is, like… half a good film. (The Selina stuff.) It could have been a lot better if Dent sponsored the Penguin's mayoral campaign, either being played by Billy Dee Williams or recasted with Walken.

I still don’t understand how a department store owner is out hustling for power plants. How is that profitable? Is it a vanity project? Every Batman movie has a scummy businessman character who's just marking time until he dies.

I didn't understand the power plant in Batman Returns either. I didn't understand why Bruce is against it, he says they don't need the power but if that is true, Gotham could still sell the power they don't need to nearby cities and use the money for things like hiring more cops to clean up the streets, how does having more power just in case Gotham needs it hurt Gotham?

Despite this Returns is my favorite Batman movie, for one it has the only time Batman and Catwoman worked for me on screen and the other worldly feel makes it like nothing else ever made.

I watch Batman Returns every Christmas.

I'm the first and most vocal opponent to DEI casting EXCEPT when it comes to villains. I'll always go back to Duncan as Kingpin in Daredevil. He made that character work, and I think Williams could have done as well if not better as Two-Face. He absolutely had the charisma needed to pull off the golden boy turned monster in a way that Eckhart and Tommy Lee Jones never could. Wild to me that the only really good Two-Face we've ever had was fucking Bull from Night Court.

Watching this because it is free on youtube and I have to kill time while doing laundry, nowhere near as bad as I remember.

Still has some of the most over the top acting this side of the room.

Jennifer Connelly is hot, why is Bruce refusing to bang her?

Duncan was in Sin City and The Green Mile. Billy Dee Williams was a soap star who lucked into playing a charming space pimp. He was never bankable like Walken or Jones.

Imagine Billy Dee Williams as Two Face. One side of my face melted off… but this side still fucks.

That makes me sad because he would have nailed it and I want to see him in more movies.

He is more fun to watch than most of the people considered big name stars these days.

I watched Troy (2004) with some guys for the first time just to see what Christopher Nolan was up against with his movie. I didn't know it only covered the Illiad and not the Odyssey, but I think it still holds up on being a historical epic! We all agreed that 2000s movies just had a vibe to them that newer movies are kind of missing. Especially with dialogue where even if it was a little stilted at times, at least it wasn't quippey or rapid fire with one desperate joke after another.

Sam Elliot is the best Gen Ross we have ever gotten and when we finally get some action this movie looks pretty good.
...what was his problem in the Hulk comics? I understand the guy turned Banner into the Hulk, but why is he hunting him? He reminds me a little bit of J. Jonah Jameson, but Jonah becomes less of a cartoon with time.

Ross is coded as “corrupt general who will later become a corrupt politician.” The fruit salad on his chest is doing all the work. @BubbaRobot887 pointed out that Shreck was investing in energy, and the movie treats it like the Springfield Nuclear Plant. It's shorthand for bad guy. (I’m not trying to start some political argument, I just think Ross is uninteresting.)

Nigga, please. They cast Mr. Mom and BEETLEJUICE as a suave billionaire vigilante. They weren’t above going a little nuts with the casting.

Long and short of it was Bruce was fucking his daughter. Put whatever spin you want on it.

All this comic talk makes me want to watch some pre-MCU Marvel Stuff. Might throw on that Thomas Jane Punisher later. Hate how much he got shafted out of being a leading man.

Thomas Jane Punisher takes no prisoners. Probably to the film's detriment.

Travolta! I was so ready for him to chew scenery. Instead he's doing a serious prestige drama? Was that the director's fault? Let the man cook!
