Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.

Reminder that Nolan contacted a period armor recreationist after they had started filming and then ghosted him.

This really was a kind of once-in-a-generation opportunity to tell this story at such a massive scale - $250 million dollar production budget - they could have filmed anywhere, built anything. Combined what we know of of real history of the era with myth to create something special. Maybe even cast a Greek actor or two.
Gabriel, Renee O'Connor, was my crush on that.
More of a callisto person myself, women are best when they are evil.

So true. My question is, why wait until after you're filming to contact an expert for your costumes? It's not his first rodeo, he knows it takes planning. I can only think of malicious reasons.

PPPPPPPPPPPPPFffffffffffffffffffffffffffff BWAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAHAHAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello Helen of Troy Somalia.

You know that Romeo and Juliet movie in the 90s with Leo Dicap that was very fucking weird because of the setting mismatch. I am picturing that this movie will have a similar weirdness but it won't be concentrated. Like little things here and there that will be off so afterwards the audience is gonna be confused but they won't truly comprehend why

It bears repeating: The Odyssey is an oral account that was later written down. It is myth that passes into historicity, which is the way it was done back in the day and seems primitive and silly to us enlightened redditors modern people nowadays, unless we are talking about African cultures, of course, in which case it is a rich cultural history that will crack the mystery of the wheel any day now. Why does this matter? Helen is the most beautiful woman in Greece, not just because she is physically attractive or of divine heritage, but because as a good woman, she is a custodian of Greek virtue, that is she is a dutiful and faithful wife and she is robbed, by a foreigner at that. It is blasphemy against everything that it means to be Greek. Imagine a beautiful Western country and it is flooded with niggers and Indians and... ah well, you get the point.

So we do not know exactly how the Trojan war happened, but we do know some kind of conflict was fought. We know who fought it, we know who they were, how they looked, how they thought, how they did things. We know that our culture, degraded as it is now, is in large part pillared on stories and the actual events of that time, which in sum used to be called history back then. Given that this is, or should be, the backdrop of this movie and discussion, I am puzzled how anyone could even entertain the idea of Helen being portrayed by a nog and soldiers by a pooner. Now sure, it is acting and halfway educated viewers such as myself would intellectually be able to look past it, but I know where it is coming from and so it remains impossible. We all know Shaka Zulu, a famous nigger in his own right, would never be portrayed by Ryan Gosling, his accomplishments would be praised, his tyranny downplayed... so no, I will never accept it. Helen is a, is the Greek woman and in those halcyon times of yore, there were no niggers to be found there, simple as.

Remember the Tolkien expert they hired for that tragedy? They fired him soon after and replaced him with a expert who hadn't read the book. Same with Wheel of Time and that abomination. I may be mixing up the two but the point is experts were fired to bring in ignorant specialists.

That's why the boat looked off. I couldn't place it at first but that's another point against Nolan.

The most I read about this movie, the most looks like Nolan's been possessed by James Gunn. I wonder if we're having a scene of the crew yelling at each other as well.

If someone ends the scene with 'well okay then' I will win the saddest award.

This is why I don't think this movie can break even, I have never seen a movie pushed like this. The advertising budget and cost of flying these stars all over the world has to be at least the same or greater than the production budget.Ver archivo adjunto 9258984
Yes but how much is this ballooning the marketing budget?

Also this movie won't have follow on merch or ips to help.

How do we call a hard, complicated labor or quest that takes too long? An odyssey.

There is an Argentinian singer with a song about a woman who waited years for her lover. Name of the song is Penelope.

I wonder if someone involved in production who's a big politically savyy notice that The Odyssey is a story about a rightful king whose absence caused foreigners to invade it with intention to proclaim themselves the new leader by taking the Queen. That's why, aside from Helen who was the one "taken", the suitors are likely not black.

I remember that when the first pics of the movie were released, before we knew about the cast, the Twitter Experts™ were all mad at the inaccuracy of the costumes. Now they seem not mad at all, isn't?

Yeah but I'm pretty sure the people behind it made no illusions that they weren't trying to faithfully adapt the actual play. I'm pretty sure it was advertised as Romeo and Juliet in a modern setting.

INT. POLYPHEMUS'S CAVE - NIGHT

Polyphemus lifts ANTIPHUS, who is tied to the underside of a sheep. The monster's jaws crunch sheep and man both with sickening ease. He wipes grease from his chin, letting out a contented, guttural burp.

Eurylochus turns to Odysseus, and shakes his head, rolling his eyes.

Eurylochus: "Well, that just happened. Any more clever ideas, Captain?"

New cope dropped: The single IMAX theater on the biggest bug hive of the East Cost of the USA is supposedly fully bought out for "the next six week straight" with a source of "trust me". Chuds BTFO this movie will make one Achillion dollars and forever cement Helen of Detroit as the true Helen.

This is a known lolcow by the way.

It was a trend in the 90s, to modernize classics for a younger audience: Clueless (Emma), Ten Things I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew), O(thello). Romeo + Juliet just kept the original script as an aesthetic choice and somehow works.

But just notice that, even when these movies had teens in mind, they never treated their audiences as stupid. The themes were just there and, at no moment, they disrespected the original sources. Because they were set in modern times, they could take liberties with the casting. In R+J, for example, you have black characters, but the casting choice never meant to say "actually, the original Mercutio was black!".
