Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Yes, all that, that's what I don't agree with. The commitment and limitations are what make Rolling Thunder what it is, and distinct from something like Contra or Megaman. The platforming is awesome.

A major iteration on Rolling Thunder came along very shortly in the form of the original Shinobi: it added midair jump controls and shooting, no "unfair" infinite respawns, and boss fights. Great game, but I still like RT a bit better.

Best update of RT is Elevator Action Returns, which has more weapons and melee attacks and all that jazz, but sticks with "bad" jumps and respawn chaos.
Fair enough if that's what you prefer. There really isn't a lot of platforming in RT, probably due to the limitation, while there seems to be a lot more in Codename: Viper. Also goes for EAR (which is awesome btw,) it doesn't really have a whole lot of actual platforming. It doesn't really need to because using the elevators is the main movement gimmick, just like hopping the rail is in RT.

I probably agree with you in spirit though, since I bothered to beat RT with no savestates on NES but don't really want to go any further with C:V, at least right now. RT2 also lets you air control, but not shoot in the air, which I think is a nice balance. Being able to shoot in the air in C:V really does change the feel imo.

It was so long ago. I want to say "the one with the cowboy theme."
This one?

Some good GBA games that people probably already know...

Ninja 5-0 (it's Shinobi x Rolling Thunder x Bionic Commando) Good luck finding a cart under $400 though... I wish I'd bought it years ago.

Astro Boy: Omega Factor, it's by Treasure and it plays sorta like Viewtiful Joe but on the GBA. (takes two playthroughs to get the real ending too I believe)

The rental place I use to visit a lot as a kid had Bucky O' Hare, Little Samson, and the 3 NES porn games.... I rented the first two on a few occasions and regret not buying em when it shut down.

After being annoyed that my PS3 wasn't a crackable model, I took a look at Marketplace and got an SCPH-2000 for $50 and cracked it last night after upgrading it to a 1TB drive salvaged from my dead Xbox One X. Going to experiment with it this afternoon, looking forward to having some fun!

Is it not even HEN capable? or is there something you specifically need CFW for

The 3000s, the last Slim before the Super Slim, as well as the Super Slim, can use HEN, but it is a pain in the ass and quite limited. I want something that is like my cracked PSP was.
idk, I set it up on my 3000 a couple months back and it was only an afternoon project. Main annoying thing is you have to load it every time you restart. Not ideal but at least it means I can play the stuff that doesn't emulate properly/at all.

But hey sounds like you got a good deal on the older model; I'd probably just spend the 50 bucks too.

With both fat (though most of them are likely lost causes from their various production issues) and slim PS3's you want to delid the Cell and RSX and get some new thermal paste on them or it'll cook itself. The exception for slims are CECH-25xx and beyond where they used thermal adhesive and any attempt to remove it will just destroy the chip under it.

The worst part about PS3's are the operating temperatures Sony let the consoles run at are pretty bad for both the Cell and RSX just to reduce fan noise. The thermal compound they used also is pretty awful and with a repaste you can get both chips under 60C/140F operating temp which opens you up for some CFW overclocking which makes quite a difference in a bunch of titles.

De-lidding is not necessary, but I will probably re-paste it. Fuck overclocking, though. I am not shortening the lifespan of my systems for small gains.

I'm tempted to do the rpi pico mod on one or both of my PS3s to get CFW going but I haven't even run HEN on either of them due to owning everything I want on PS3. It's just about half are digital copies.

I'd like to disassemble them soon and replace the CR2032 so the time/encryption thing doesn't become an issue any time soon at least, and I assume at some point someone will figure out a software only CFW for later PS3s.

The paste Sony used under the IHS especially for the Cell is extremely poor along with a minimal amount of it. The Cell processor doesn't have a particularly high operating temp tolerance lifespan. Replacing just the paste on the heatsink is not enough, I've delidded multiple PS3's and the paste under the IHS is dust, in all instances the cell temp reduces from 80C/176F to 60C/140F range versus only a couple degrees on taxing titles with just a heatsink paste replace. Delidding the RSX is preferable for longevity but it's less critical than the Cell delid.

The pic attached is typical of what you find under the IHS which is not acceptable for heat transfer, I've had cases where even less is on the Cell.
