For what it's worth gunshot detects are notoriously unreliable from what i've heard.
They can generate false positives, but not to the degree that taking them away was a good idea.

Objectively speaking, why they will amount to nothing is because they are basically trying to be the Klan (anonymous “patriotic” organization with chapters and white regalia) but have no significant members. The Klan was called the “Invisible Empire” because those in hoods would be your mayor or good sections of the police force (back when local leaders meant more ofc).
