He said he prefers sympathy to empathy and doesn't really go on to explain, but I don't think it's fair to conclude that he was advocating for some sort of sociopathic selfishness. Seems more like he didn't like using the word empathy because it implies you know what the person's going through when you don't, which I admit is kind of a nitpicky criticism, but it's not totally unreasonable or callous. I'm no fan of Kirk but there's no need to take the worst possible interpretation of the words of people we don't like.

The topic had popped up because of Vance denouncing empathy (I think using the phrase "suicidal empathy" or at least it got tangled up in the discourse). Kirk was basically hopping on the bandwagon to talk about the topic and sound like he was fully on board with it, then turns around and describes being empathetic as actually god. Effectively contradicting himself. Basically taking both sides of the issue since he didn't want to step in the shit Vance had steeped himself in (along with a multitude of other right wingers).

Looking it up, it even caused the pope to chime in about how Vance was misconstruing that concept of ordo amoris, which Vance was using as justification for not caring as much about strangers.

I'm fairly certain Vance was trying to get on board with the meme talking points that had gone around involving this survey where they asked left and right wing people what the furthest thing they'd feel empathy towards was. Left wingers went "yeah I'd care about all variety of stuff" while right wingers answered "I'd only care about those closest to me", which really just seems like an issue of people not knowing how to read the survey since I doubt all those right wingers would really act like sociopaths to strangers on the street.

Vance tried bringing up a Catholic concept to get in on the topic with and it resulted in the a multitude of people seeing him as an asshole misusing religion to the point the pope felt he had to chime in.

Now, I hate to sound like I'm defending the orange golem, but maybe Trump just heard about it and reacted violently? I would love to know what kind of temperature he demands to have set around him. That sort of temperature is bordering on uncomfortable in shirtsleeves for me as a less than fit middle aged man, let alone a morbidly obese cunt with fastened tie and suit jacket (even a lightweight, loose one) who is only months from death. To Trump, being subjected to 80+ degrees F for minutes on end is tantamount to a death threat.

I can sort of see where you’re coming from here, but I’d argue that if he didn’t want people interpreting his words a certain way, he should have been clearer about stating what he actually meant. Considering he spoke for a living, the fact that it has to be interpreted a certain way to figure out what he “seemed” to actually be saying in the first place is pretty pathetic; someone in his position shouldn’t have to rely on the benefit of the doubt to get his point across.

Maybe this is why miggers worship him like a pagan deity: he’s the embodiment of failing upwards, which is the only hope that miggers have for success.
