I Recommend you read Japan's Total Empire: Manchuria and the Culture of Wartime Imperialism by Louise Young. it changed my perspective on why Japan was like that. Pan-Asianism and a broader anti European imperialism was an animating force in Japan, a conception developed from being consistently snubbed by the great European powers in the late 19th and early 20th century. that they alone as the only coloured race to resist the dominance of Europe was proof enough that they had a duty to shape Asia in its image (ie interest) to replace the failing Chinese as the head of a Confucian family of nations, I hope your intelligent enough to know I'm to excusing Japanese war crimes or imperialism or normalised abuse under Japan's dominion.

This here is a great explanation for japanese imperialism but another aspect not touched apon in this post was imperial japans obsession with being seen as the most “Modern” power. Imperial japan was a fundamentally modernist power that sought to “liberate Asia” from western imperialism to uplift them into modernity. Modernity in this context is being more like japan, It’s why japanese colonization and assimilation efforts were so prevalent in korea and manchuria. Japans view of modernity saw the cultures of korea and especially china as backward and fundamentally unable to modernize, thus japan had to step in and forcibly bring them into the modern world the same way meji forcibly brought japan into the modern world

Japan never 'resisted' the west, unless if putting up with a coastal bombardments after instigating conflicts is resistance. Both Siam and Korea did more to resist western powers than Japan by that metric

Now, sure, I understand what you're getting at, but fundamentally I don't think Japan's developing an ideology around a civilizing mission that led it to conquer other asian nations and attempt to utterly destroy their cultures and settle their lands is so much anti-colonial in nature as it is the ideological framework to justify a global race war.

Yes but that was mainly because they wanted to keep good relationships with Britain since they were Russia's greatest rival at the time. The Japanese in general behaved extremely opportunistically when it came to foreign policy, and shit they did like the annexation of Korea or them trying to monopolize influence over China didn't set right with most of the European powers, France in particular had frequent spats with them since they were trying to do the same in South China and their interests often conflicted. Japan can also be blamed in part for Qing China exploding since most of the important figures in the Chinese republican movement were educated in and funded by Japan, that and their land grab of most of Germany's East Asian/Pacific colonies really pissed off most of Europe since they had agreed to keep the Qing going so as to prevent any conflicts from starting there and then escalating into a continental war. Iirc that was one of the reason why the Anglo-Japanese alliance ended.

It's been said before and I'll reiterate again: they should just have made a new mod or stuck with something akin to The Campaign Trail instead of reworking the funny nuclear BurgSys mod from scratch. All their problems would've gone away and if they'd done the latter the audience would've been more positive about it being a preachy CYOA book instead of a wargame.

We'll likely never know for sure but there is a clear difference between everything before and after 2024. In 2022-3 you still had Pacifica and others as moderating forces against the US and Germany devs. They tipped the scales and after fully taking over the mod in 2024 the US and Germany teams seem to have gotten rid of everyone that dissented and even stopped holding leadership elections. If you compare the old content to the new it seems like they had to make compromises to their vision of nothing ever happening but in the new you instead get a tripling down on it and see all of Africa being reworked into otl decolonization. We can't prove it for sure but I think it's more likely than not that they got a lot of pushback from other devs until they took over the mod and just got rid of them. I'd compare the effects to Mugabe chasing out all the white farmers but I doubt Mango's ego would allow him to ask the people who actually knew how HOI4 works to return.

Unironically TNO did more to help the far-right then TFR. Stuff like hyperborea memes and people becoming aware of it can be traced back to TNO. A lot of strange cultural memes can be traced to them as even some of the NATO-wave stuff can be traced back to OFN-wave. I would also hesitate to call Gunther far-right, he is a die hard liberalism fan as his balkanize X meme is usually done to nations he deems authoritarian who get his ire.
