mediocre means average - it doesn't mean below average, poor, bad, or anything like that. It is a synonym for average.

common law marriage - common law marriage was an old timey way to recognize marriages that had no paperwork. The man and woman had to hold themselves out in public as a married couple. No, you can't become common law married if you live with a chick for a certain number of years, stop saying that you can. Common law marriages are actual marriages if they're recognized in a certain jurisdiction. I know there are cohabitation laws that can put you on the hook financially in certain retarded countries, but they have nothing to do with common law marriage.

edit: another one is trolling - trolling is deliberately and insincerely posting outlandish and provocative content with the intention of riling people up. But just because people's sensitive asses get riled up by something doesn't make it trolling.

edit 2: I forgot about grifting - this one is used in a way that is way off from it's original meaning. Grifting is obtaining money through some fraudulent(meaning actually illegal) means. But people started using it to mean obtaining money or clout by deceitfully mirroring a certain crowds beliefs and opinions back to them. Which is something a lot of internet personalities are prone to do. But ultimately now it just means "person whose opinions I don't approve of and so therefore can't be sincere".

As much as I'd love to shit on OP for such an autistic post, I'm taking the opportunity to ask the people of the Internet to kindly stop misusing the word "penultimate".

I suspect the confusion has arisen because "ultimate" can either mean something that is final, or as a superlative to describe something that is beyond excellent. Someone using "penultimate" in this incorrect form is trying to add a superlative to a superlative.

Oh, and to save you from Googling, "penultimate" means the second to final thing, where "ultimate" is the final thing.
 
Mediocre means of middle quality. Depending on the context, it may be worse than average. In school grading, for example, a mediocre grade is worse than an average grade.

Also, words have connotations beyond their literal meaning, and mediocre is a disparaging term. That's why the notion of a desirable middle between undesirable extremes is called the "golden mean" and not the "golden mediocrity".

Ok, can this be a complaint thread about how the youths are illiterate, because the number of times I hear the little tictac kiddies (native English speakers) say "inside" when they mean "in" or "into" is troubling. For example, "pour the cream inside the soup."

Personally I hate when people saying they "were gifted" instead of they were "given a gift."
Gifted is what public schools claimed the weird kids were when they wanted extra funding.

Also utilized instead of used.
