You're perhaps getting the order backwards. Definitions come and go and come back and disappear again, all depending on how a word is used. Look up some words in the Oxford English Dictionary sometime; it's quite fascinating to see how the various definitions evolved. You can probably find a copy of the OED at your local public library, and they probably have acces to electronic copies as well.

I'm inclined to believe that "nigger" comes from the romantic root for "black", shared amongst French and Spanish and Italian. If there was at one time a meaning for "nigger" that meant "slovenly" or "lazy" that was probably because the African slaves had sloppy dress and poor work ethic, and it became an insult to insinuate that one worked no harder and dressed no better than farm equipment. Just as the literal meaning of "retard" was "to delay or slow down", straight form its romantic roots ("re-": "back", "tardare": "to slow"), as it became used to describe someone who's mental development was delayed or someone who was slow to learn things, so too did it become an insult to make that comparison.

In any event, "nigger" is primarily an insult now, invoking every negative stereotype that could be attributed to the old chattel slaves imported from Africa, and their modern day descendants. If dictionaries dropped other definitions, it is likely because those definitions have simply fallen out of use, not out of any Woke conspiracy to hide the true history of English from White People.
