Let's Sperg Fangames, ROM Hacks, and Mods... Oh My! - The main discussion place for all playable fan projects, most of them made by absolute autists

A couple others:
- Zelda64Recomp, a dissembled N64 cart that's recompiled for PC
- zelda3, remake of the SNES zelda

For something a little more fun, there's a GZDoom mod called Ashes 2063

You basically have two options nowadays for fangames.

One, the virtue signaling.

Two, it being made by third-worlders, thus it will have an ESL quality.

So yes, you kind of have to grin and bear it, especially if the fangame has a story and is therefore a glorified fanfiction.
Not necessarily for the second point. Pokémon fan games in foreign languages tend to get English translations. The Spanish ones tend to be pretty excellent on average.

Any spergs able to recommend a Pokémon dungeon hack that backports the new gens? Have it narrowed down to Explorers of Skies and Explorers of Fortune but if theres a better option lemme know.

Pokémon Lazarus came out recently and I highly recommend it.

Every once in a while, you come across a ROM hack that changes your perception on what can be done with an old game engine. The Patchmaker's Workshop, which I just finished 100%ing yesterday, just became one of those for me. I highly encourage you to go into this one blind.

Has anyone here played Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers? I played it for a while and honestly thought it was pretty boring.

After nearly 2 decades in development and few failed attempts at making it a reality, we now have a full-fledged EarthBound Beginnings/Mother 1 remake made entirely within EarthBound's engine.
As a bonus, there includes a seperate patch for you to apply to your EarthBound rom that adds some QoL features and certain changes that makes it more apparent it's a sequal to EBB/Mother.

You can apply the patches on their website here: https://ebbr.neocities.org/downloads_content
You can also listen to the soundtrack here: https://ebbr.neocities.org/soundtrack_content

There's also a strategy guide that comes along with the game, but it's not finished yet and will drop once it is.

As said before, the project is lead by a troon and one of its composer is a tranny, however looking at the credits we can see it was a large collaborative effort from the EarthBound community as a whole, so it's not entirely pozzed and negholed (hopefully). Whether this is a worthy hack or not we shall see, I've already got mine patched and playing it rn.

I don’t care if it turns out to be good or not. We honestly should never support anything (fan-made or official) with any troon faggotry involvement whatsoever.

Animal Crossing Deluxe might be the best way I've ever played Animal Crossing, barring maybe Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I've been playing this mod for over a month now. It has all the best quality of life features from past Animal Crossing entries, backported into the original Gamecube release, with a sprinkle of new content as well, incorporating cut content and beta items left over in the original game's code.

Here are just some of the highlights:
  • Native widescreen support you can toggle on or off when loading your save file. Also introduces a "free camera" mode, where the camera follows your villager freely, without the transitions between acres. The game displays your current acre just above the clock in the bottom-right corner, and you can freely toggle this on or off when loading your save file.

  • Villagers, fish, insects, and items from the Japanese-only Dobutsu no Mori e+ have been added to the game, including that one event where you can bang on the front door of Nook's shop to make him open up during after hours. :lit:

  • Town Ordinances from New Leaf are in the game. You can enact them from the post office for 50k Bells and they take effect the next day. Public works projects are also available, after a fashion. A previously unused special NPC character (a red squirrel named Renna) can show up in your town from time to time with a random selection of public works projects you can build or demolish for 25k Bells.

  • Custom designs can be dropped and cleared away as tiles just like in previous games.

  • Kapp'n is available 24/7 at the dock, no GBA connection from Dolphin required.
Best of all, they removed that bug where the game clock wouldn't continue past the year 2030; it can now go up to the year 2099! So you never have to worry about playing this game asynchronously. Additionally this game looks fantastic with the fan-made HD texture pack. It doesn't work on the items from Dobutsu no Mori e+, but it's worth it to see this game in HD with widescreen support. The mod is still under development, but if you don't want to have to join a Discord server, here's a link to the current version. You'll need an uncompressed .iso of the North American release of Animal Crossing to play it; it should be 1.35 GB in size.

Mario Kart 64 (Amped Up) was particularly surreal for me. It was like playing a dream you'd have as a kid of one of your old games suddenly having a bunch of new levels. I'm not big into romhacks or modding but for some reason that one really tickled me. It's still amazing to me how people are able to so thoroughly mod N64 games these days.
