Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

It's ridiculous how many times I've seen these things out unleashed in my neighborhood in the past year. They're often different ones too. It's to the point when I'm out running, I'm constantly checking for objects or fences I can jump to in case I encounter 1 (or sometimes 2 together). I'm not even in the ghetto, I suspect it's a bunch of dumb white liberals with a savior complex (ie: fighting doggy-racism). It always seems to be this breed that's unleashed too, like these people want to cause trouble.

I'm thinking of getting pepper spray.
What sort of place is it normal for dogs to be on the loose? Don't they have leash laws? You say you're not in the ghetto but this sounds incredibly fucking ghetto. All the loose dog scenarios I've been involved in the dog was either lost/escaped or had been dumped, not let to roam intentionally like that. Based on the whole thread apparently random pitbulls running around is not uncommon, do I live in the one place in America where that doesn't happen? Not doubting you just confused.

Some people just don't give a shit.

I like when someone owns a cat and a dog that grew up together and are kind to eachother. But they’re also a similar size and actually look the exact same. I saw this one girl have a sphinx cat and a hairless chihuahua and it was just really funny to look at.
Some big dogs breeds are great with cats too! We have a Great Pyrenees and she absolutely adores the cat. We brought her home at 9 weeks and she had already been well socialized in a home with 3 cats, so she was already pretty well behaved with our kitty right from the start. After the initial shock wore off, the cat was happy to have a new bestie and constantly brought over his favourite toys to share with her.

The dog is about 6 times heavier than the cat now but very mindful of her size and treats him very gently. She’s happiest when she gets to slobber all over her feline brother.

I'm certainly not in a rich neighborhood (no HOA), and there's more ghetto-like neighborhoods about a mile away, so I'm not far. But it's definitely middle class where I'm at. I will mention most of the time I've seen pits, they don't seem to have an owner around.

There's really 3 types of people I consider to be pit owners:
1. Ghetto/ethnics (or let's be mean and say niggers and spics)
2. Rednecks
3. White liberals with a savior complex, especially millennials who love having "fur babies".

I have a lot of type 3 in my neighborhood, with type 1 not far away. Another problem is pit bulls are massively getting overbred by shitty people, then often end up in dog rescue shelters. I've even read in many places dog shelters are becoming half or majority pit bull now. Combine that fact with people who want to rescue dogs, you end up with lots of naive people getting them.

>Dog thread turns into cat thread

The indoor outdoor cat debate is funny since the main purpose of cats is pest control. That's what they were domesticated for. Can't do that very well if they're inside all day. In my parent's generation cats were outdoor-only animals, they didn't want them bringing fleas and diseases inside. And now people say cats don't belong outside. I guess it depends where you live and if pest animals are a problem or not. Don't have to be on a farm or in the wilderness, just being on the edge of undeveloped land there will be a massive resevoir of critters messing with your yard and trying to get in your house. No way poison or traps are better for the environment.

There's certainly some cats that are too dumb/friendly to be outside for their own good. If it is the type that goes up to strangers looking for pets it is not gonna last long. The best are the former street cats that act like they're in a war zone when outside. Those ones seem to live forever.

What are bobcats?

Bobcats don't kill anything they see for fun like house cats do. Domestic cats need to be indoors or on a short leash so they can't annihilate the bird population.

Something that bothers me almost as much as pit owners are the lawmakers and our fellow citizens that force you to overthink about and second guess how you're allowed to save your loved ones from being mauled by a pet beast. I can kick the shit out of a coyote or other wild animals for even being near my loved ones, but when it comes to pets it's on me to read the situation perfectly. How much damage am I supposed to allow to my child's face and neck before I can protect a human being? Loose dogs are ok, right? A dog nipping is just them being nervous, right? A dog latching on for a few seconds is reading the situation as dangerous but they'll probably let go. Maybe it's a few bites and then they run off, that's not worth death, is it? It's a weird dynamic.

With all due respect, if your immediate reaction to a shitbull making a snack out of little Timmy is “gosh, how could this backfire on me legally?” and not punting that fucker into the next county, you’ve got your priorities mixed up…

I agree, and if I ever have to deal with this first hand I'd hope to God I take aggressive action to protect my loved ones. But seeing videos of attacks people are really more worried about hurting the dog and less worried about the dog hurting the person. I would argue this is a second order effect of knife and gun laws plus the anthropomorphizing of pets. You can see it in the way people act.

Some people just don't give a shit.
A LOT of people don't give a shit, I live in the middle-of-nowhere and even I put my dog on a leash because of that.

Having an unsecured dog bolt for us off of someone's property is almost a daily occurrence.

I have to actually drive even FURTHER away to have a peaceful walk where only wildlife is encountered.

Easy to say until it's your neck. Or wallet.

Our hyper-litigious society? Mixed with the progressive idea that certain things just can't ever be the at fault aggressors? Has ruined basic social interactions to the point that we've become a nation of bystanders to those in distress because we can't, literally cannot, afford to jump in.

People have been sued for everythign that they have for something as simple as pushing another away from a fight.

When they haven't been killed in retaliation.

You're not even safe then, unfortunately.

Overzealous state bureaucrats in the Fish and Game Comission will come after you for that too.

If you're ever being followed down the highway by a Game Warden? And accidentally roadkill an animal? Well. There have been cases where they have pulled the "offender" over and cited them for killing a protected species.

It's all madness these days. And that's why you're better off not getting involved.

If you're surrounded by other people who see you "take care of things" it can be complicated, yeah. But if there are no witnesses just shovel and shut the fuck up.

A lot of problems are created when people try to "do the respectable" thing by going to authorities about the dog they needed to shoot or whatever else. Just put the feral thing down, if it has identification, get rid of it and then dispose of the body too.

You already know anyone who owns those types of dogs isn't a logical person who will be reasonable to deal with. So don't deal with them.

Yeah, I noticed that too in a few places I've lived in and visited. A bunch of dogs, loose on properties without fences or gates to keep them in. The dogs chase after anyone they notice, the owners obviously see no problems with these things, and then we get a news post in this thread.

What sort of place is it normal for dogs to be on the loose?
My hometown is very white and semi-rural. On the surface my neighborhood looked like suburbia but you can walk a mile down the road and find wheat fields (for example). People letting their dogs roam free outside regardless of breed is very commonplace there. I've mentioned before ITT that we used to have backyard chickens and have lost dozens to dog attacks. We also didn't have animal control, so it was very much a, "If you have a problem you have to go to the cops or go to the neighbor yourself" situation.

My current apartment complex has a wide variety of dogs. I see them being walked frequently. There is only one pair of dogs that I consistently see being allowed to roam off-leash (two dogs, same owner) and guess what breed they are. Pits. I've also already witnessed them chasing other dogs and people. It's only a matter of time.

Basically dogs being allowed to roam freely with impunity is unfortunately not rare BUT pit owners also seem to have very high rates of not being able or wanting to contain their monsters. It's a feature of pit ownership, not a bug.

Easy to say until it's your neck. Or wallet.
My own child or other loved one would take priority over either of these things. I'd like to say someone else's child would too, but no guarantees there.

I still think about the man who got charged with murder for shooting the owner of the pits who mauled his wife (or possibly were in the process of mauling his wife - it's not clear from any article I read) after he got between him and the dogs. Assuming the attack was in progress at the time, what else was he supposed to do? Just let this dog lover stop him from saving his wife? Fuck that.

I also expect these people don't put them on a leash because they know that if you complain about it, suddenly you're *THAT* guy, or a "Karen". There's something about pit-bull owners that I associate with people who don't respect boundaries or the situations they create for other people. It's the same mentality I associate with people who support mass immigration: do something that makes them feel self-righteous or "good", while the actual consequences of those choices are experienced by different people. Now if those other people want out of the situation or object to it, they have to be the bad guy (ie: the "racist" or the dog-hater).

I know this is anecdotal but one of my sisters lives in a straight ghetto HUD apartment in the deep south while one of my cousins married a well off guy and lives in the suburbs. Not a single shitbull in the ghetto despite it being 90% black populated. My cousin is now looking into a handgun bc every other day there is some dumb white bitch on her Nextdoor app posting about how Nala and Luna got loose again. Seems like black people have washed their hands with this breed while white people(women mostly) are on a crusade to save them from their "bad rep".

How is it even a 'pet' if you just throw it outside and let it roam, and barely even see it?
THATS WHAT I WAS SAYING LOL

I mostly see it in my neighborhood with small dog breeds that “can’t hurt anyone”, as if that’s the only reason people leash their dogs, lol. There’s also this unleashed German Shepard but it’s “ok” cause “he has a shock collar”
????
One thing I’ve noticed that I absolutely hate are the people who just like leash their dogs in front of their house and never take them inside. I see this with pitbulls but also just like everyone. There’s this one dog, not sure of the breed, that I’ve only seen in the neighbor’s house like twice. How do they even feed him?
Seems like black people have washed their hands with this breed
Nah, we love pitbulls still. We’ve just also realized we’re lazy so we’ll just get lazy dogs instead.

I’m so mad 🎩🎩🎩.

My mean fucking faggot neighbor fosters dogs, it’s the only redeemable quality he has.
Always beautiful actually adoptable dogs, the last one was a border collie.
For years it’s been a stream of lovely sometimes magnificent dogs.

Today- I see him with a shitbull.
Now there’s a shitbull in our sane quiet safe neighborhood again, what the fuck is wrong with you faggot man?
