I hate the whole born this way argument, but I think that it's not always the kid's fault or it's something that can't be fixed. Autistic kids were always going to be weird. They can't help it, but a lack of standards due to a sense of guilt in shaming the helpless isn't productive.
Shaming can sometimes work to get people to change, but only if they're already introspective and willing to accept they're doing something wrong. If they aren't, it just makes them dig their heels in and feel victimized therefore "right." The hard part is, with any change (let alone addiction,) the person at the center of it has to acknowledge they have a problem and want to change. If they don't reach that conclusion themselves, they're not gonna change. The shame has to come from inside the house, basically.

Well and, as one glasses-wearing-egg pointed out, eventually people can just stop caring about being shamed. Shame can act like a sort of social antibiotic, where it can tamp down unwanted behaviors in people, but if you overshame them they'll eventually steel themselves against the discomfort that shame brings them. You look at the early 2010s where every lefty social justice faggot was using shame liberally (no pun intended) to try and browbeat and bully people for liking tits in video games or not having enough black women in movies, and eventually the people who were supposed to be shamed into submission eventually developed an immunity and stopped caring. The more you shame someone the more you run the risk of creating shame-resistant strains of retard.
