I've been saying this for months, but the Modern SMG4 fandom HATES Classic SMG4. They think Modern SMG4 is more serious and mature compared to the classic episodes, conveniently forgetting that they did things like this:

Furthermore, with that first comment, he's unaware that the Modern episodes are also hated, and would be much more so if Glitch didn't have its reputation as "King of Indie Animation". Looking at his Modern SMG3 pfp, I can tell he's one of those Modern SMG4 fans who unironically find the forced emotional moments in the Modern episodes touching, and probably ships SMG4 with SMG3.

I only watched SMG4 in the early days when it was all comedy and maybe commenting on something relevant to Mario, like the bootleg/Grand Dad meme when that was popular. It (and its characters) never had to try to be anything more than comedy or entertainment because they didn't think it had to be and they didn't try and pretend the videos were anything more than that. If you watch early SMG4 videos, it seems more like kids/teens thinking "wouldn't this be funny" and then they just wrote it into whatever episodic plot they thought up, and that resonated with their audience who was probably around their age. I think it got too big, they and some of their fans thought they were masters of storytelling, and then that snowballed into Glitch Productions and the whole mentality they have now. To put it simply, they went from entertainers to businessmen far too up their own asses to recognize that they weren't really fit for this side of animation (if you even want to count their early days as animation) or business.
People not recognizing the difference between old SMG4 sticking to what it did well (mostly) even if it was "edgy" and new SMG4 + Glitch becoming some monstrosity of bad plots and terrible humor really speaks to how SMG4's decline mirrors TADC's decline. People thought it was good at first, then the cracks became more and more obvious until you had to give up and recognize the shows weren't the same as you thought they were anymore. Think about it, all the theories and speculation on TADC brought a lot of popularity to it, but as the theories were proven false (not a bad thing if the plot and characters were better) and the actual plot and characters were far worse than a lot of the theories, then it really started to alienate people who weren't rabid fans. I found the drama and decline of TADC to be more interesting than TADC itself which is embarrassing considering it was shilled everywhere I looked.
As for why people took the original SMG4 videos so seriously? I think it comes down to seeing the new SMG4/Glitch videos and assuming the old ones were like that when their purpose was completely different and they were for a different audience.

Worst most of these mofos do is be annoying, woke and a bit parasocial, which can be found in excess in most major fandoms anyways. But THEN he also dgaf about children having easy access to his show and his show appealing to kids more than anything, so the large underage and therefore automatically stupid portion of the fanbase is completely 100% his fault in the first place??

2. The fandom rightfully getting upset that most of the cast constantly gets sidelined for Jax.
3. The fandom rightfully getting upset about the stupid theatre release.
4. The fandom watching the leaks.

The character design process was just Cooper making various sketches first, then making up their personalities afterwards based on these sketches. The character designs, personalities, and dynamics in the show don't differ that much from what can be seen in the pitch.
