I have a friend (foreign born, not going to specify what country) who teaches at a community college. He's given lectures on uniquely American topics like the American war for independence, slavery, the civil war, etc. and most of his students couldn't tell you what year any of the major events happened. He was absolutely flabbergasted, saying "Look, this is not my history. I know the history of my country, and I know the history of your country. This is your history, you should care about this!"
