This was the only class he took that semester and we know he wasn't busy with a job or a social life. I guess this really is the best he can do.

The obvious answer is the class was probably a cake course that hands out automatic A's, which of course speaks very highly for the class, program, and school.
However, there's a couple alternative theories for sure:
- Maybe the teacher thought he was intentionally being contrarian for the course, and thought he was doing such an exceptional job they had to give him an A.
- Maybe David was brought in as a model of sorts for the other students to learn about the vast intricacies of human relations? Ya know? Researching the dynamics for how to navigate such an adversarial individual, and how you could apply that in the real world.
TBH, there's legitimate scientific and academic value in that kind of research. Acerthorn is so statically set on the antagonistic spectrum that he's basically the perfect control. The only real issue are the numerous variables in how he chooses to respond, but even that is kinda narrowed down to a specific subset.
He had to withdraw from Human Relations the previous semester, which makes for a fitting summary of David's life hence: "withdrawn from Human Relations."
